My mom used to sing this to me before I went to sleep when I was little. From the day I was born to the day she died she called me sunshine. Rest in peace, mom. I love you.
Oh man, here come the water works! God damn, that's a tear jerker. I still have my mom, but recently lost my dad. It's been rough. Part of growing up and becoming my own adult I guess. Still doesn't make it any easier. Thank you for sharing such a special memory. Your momma must have been a good one.
Today is my 28 year old son’s 22nd anniversary since he passed away from cancer, before he went with our Lord I asked him what his favorite song was, and thinking he was going to name a heavy metal song I was surprised to hear him say “ Sunshine on my shoulders”, so I always remember my son when I hear this song and I always listen to it on his anniversary! I miss him so much!
Missing him can be very heartbreaking. I pray the good Lord holds you in His arms and consoles you. May you feel your son's kiss on your forehead through the wind and may Jesus help you find peace of heart and mind.
I see that this song reminds a lot of people of love ones they've lost. I'm no different. My friend died last week, his funeral is tomorrow. This song reminds me of our time together. We would drive out to some middle of nowhere place, smoke some weed and just talk, sometimes explore. We listened to this song often. I'm afraid to face tomorrow, but I know his friends will be there, and my friends from a long time ago. I'm sure they'll remember those times, too. It's going to be really hard, but I'll be happy to see them again.
My wife was battling cancer, on one of her good days, she wanted to go to Disney World, she loved the atmosphere. We got home that evening, I sang this to her as I put her into bed. Three months later she lost her battle and I lost her love. “If I had a day that I could give you, I’d give to you a day just like today”.
I'm currently battling breast cancer so I understand this. When the good days are there you just want to do what you have wanted to do before you were diagnosed. I have my last chemo next week. Let's pray the MRI is good in a few weeks ahead of my surgery and then radiation. I'm hoping to put all this behind me. I'm sorry your wife lost her battle with whatever cancer she battled. Every time I hear this song it brings me back to my youth. I wish there was a way to go back and live it all over again. No internet. 3 channels on TV. Our parents would have had to tie us down with ropes in order to prevent us from going outside to play regardless of the weather. The days of innocence. Great memories. And this song puts me in that happy place when I hear it now.
My grandmother is living her final days. As we were saying goodbye one night last week, I noticed the day's last sunlight sneaking through the blinds. Remembering that this is one of her favorite songs, I fired up the video and started singing it to her. She immediately remembered the words and sang along. Knowing that her mind and body were at peace for 5 minutes was a beautiful way to conclude our evening. And while I have decades of wonderful memories, I'll always cherish those blissful 5 minutes. [Addition 22-Jan 2019] Thank you for the kind words in the replies. Just to clarify: she did not die while we were listening to the song, but she did pass away about a month later. She was the most loving person I've ever known.
This was my grandads favourite song, so we played it at his funeral. He always would be out in the summer painting, making flower beds, just anything out of wood. He loved the sun and the heat. On his last summer, i used to help him stack wood for our wood burner, i knew he wouldn’t be here the next year because of everything his body was failing. He brought out a icecream on an especially hot day and I remember sitting there and eating it. I didnt like the ice cream but i knew it would be a good memory so i ate it and we just sat side by side in the sun. I love him
I played this song at my daughter’s funeral 14 years ago. She was 22 months when she passed and she was our ray of sunshine and guardian angel. I can hardly listen to this song without getting choked up.
I cannot tell you how sorry I am. I cannot imagine. May you find God's comfort and peace and the most healing that can be found while you're on this side. When I heard this this morning I pictured singing this to my mother as she was dying but I didn't get a chance to do that. I only wished I had. I surely would have. I remember singing this to my daughter when she was little and asleep and feeling so much love for her and I will always think of that along with my childhood when I was growing up and how popular this song was. I would be praying for you.
I know my words can't bring back what you lost. I cannot even begin to comprehend the chaos you had to go through. I'm so sorry. I'll be praying for you.
This song was always profound for me, and you and your daughter, God Rest Her Soul, have made it even more so. Your daughter has now reached others. RIP Alyssa.
I am 63 and grew up listening to John Denver, James Taylor, Carol King, etc. These artists represent something sorry missing in today’s music. I will be playing classic music like this for my grandkids, so they know beauty and emotion, not the vulgar sounds of rap. How can that be called music?? Anyhoo, thank you John, for transporting me back to simpler times. Rest in peace ❤️
I grew up on all that music too and totally agree with you🤗 Classic music that is timeless and hold so much meaning for us all🌺 I am your generation too🌟 God bless✨
I sang this song to my beautiful newborn son 36 years ago... It's been 3 1/2 years now since I lost him... He will always be the sunshine on my shoulder.. I miss you every minute of everyday Aaron
NotCarsonDaily After reading your comment, I went from remembering my old comment and thinking it was funny, to feeling bad, to remembering why I made the comment in the first place. Whilst I obviously sympathise with people losing loved ones, especially their children, I find these sorts of comments very strange. I guess people need an outlet or somthing, if you want to look at it in a positive way, but I find the emotional dumping to be a little unsettling. Like, why do feel the need to share your most horrific tragedy with the world, on a forum designed for pointless shitposts. It's kinda cringy, like someone having a mental breakdown in public. I also (cynically I know) can't help but feel a little nagging sensation that these comments are some attempt at getting sympathy points from strangers. I can't know why this woman said what she did. And I kinda hope she's not reading this know because again, I sympathise. However, I reserve the right to make quips on anything, if only to poke fun at the strange ways people choose to express themselves. And note, that's all I did. Just poking fun at a strange type of comment you see from time to time, and deflating it a bit.
Currently sitting in the hospital with my Mom, who has throat cancer and is losing the battle. I'm playing this for her, knowing John Denver was her favorite. Love you, Mom. 🙏✝️🌅
In the summer of 1975 my girlfriend at the time and I hiked the 200-mile Tahoe-Yosemite Trail for two weeks, and we sang this song almost daily. She's long dead now, her ashes I buried in the wilderness in 2011, but this song brings her back to life as I see and hear us back in that summer so long ago. RIP Patty, RIP John.
Og ReinHard ... just when i have given up on it.. this pops up.. guess it means something.. something to ponder on.. look towards the brighter side.. the sunshine
Reminds me of the late Jim Croce's beautiful ballad, "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" (Apr 1974), that hit #9. "Sunshine" was John Denver's first #1 at the beginning of that same month. A memorable duo, who both died in airplane crashes. R.I.P. to these unique singer-songwriters!
I would sing this when I was a little boy playing outside just to escape and get away from the meanness in the house. Still makes me cry too this day 49 years later!
I'm brazilian, in february 1 my dad has passed away. I just came here knowing the first phrase of this song cause long long time ago, travelling alone with him, in a sunny and beautifull day, this song started in a brazilian radio station. Today, listening to this, i dont cry because im sad or something, but because i miss my best friend in this world, one of the best men world can give
I'm 13, I Used to listen to this with my dad on road trips, he passed from a heart attack last summer. I try to remember the good times with him instead of the bad I love you Dad and I always will even though you might not have felt the same.
To whoever is reading this, I wish you the best, that all your dreams will come true and that you are happy. You are beautiful and loved, don't forget that. Treat people with kindness, respect and spread love, in my opinion it is the only thing that matters, because everything we give comes back to us. Love and peace to the world.
❤❤ lots of love and blessings to you. It is one of the best comments existing on youtube. Thanks for adding hope in my day today. Love your kind words.
It seems like this song has a special place in everyone’s heart. I’m 15 now I used to listen to this when I was 7. Music like this is different than anything else
It’s great to know more young people are out there listening to this. I’m 46 now. Born in 1977, I was raised on John Denver…The man was literally EVERYWHERE by then. Music, movies (Oh God!), The Muppet Show, even the PMRC hearings with Dee Snider and Frank Zappa to fight censorship in music. I’m also an aviation nerd, so it’s neat to know that not only was John a pilot, but his father actually set speed records in the B-58 Hustler bomber decades ago. Krispin, if you love this stuff, you might want to check out The Chad Mitchell Trio, Cat Stevens, The Kingston Trio, Bud and Travis, Joe and Eddie (There’s a Meetin’ Here Tonight), Jim Croce…there is just SO much incredible music out there that most people your age and mine are totally unaware of. It’s just waiting to be rediscovered!
@@FloridaManMattyI agree with this 1,000% (P.S. thanks for letting me know about John Denver’s dad! I had no idea his aviation background… I’ll have to Google it. So Interesting!)
That's realy absolut gorgeous...in your age ? I'm 66 and this song was a very special in my twenty's... Thank you for let me know that JD and his musik, is still recognized and lives on! Love from Brazil !!!
I'm DEFINATELY listening in 2020!. I'm 72 yrs young & never fathomed this would ever happen to us. Hang in there my people.🙏🙏 There is always darkness before the dawn 💙🌈❤️
Well , I'm listening and I'm 84. What I love is his beautiful clear diction and voice that just floats. Did he write the words to this. So direct and simple. So glad he left recordings for us that have such beautiful sentiments.
We played this at my grandma's funeral this past June. I've had a lot of loss in my life recently and this song makes me realize that even though someone or something is gone, they will always be with you in your heart and the sunshine reminds us of the good and the bad times. Life goes fast. Don't forget to say I love you every day.
I remember as well. There will never be another decade like the 70’s for music. John Denver was his own genre of music. He incorporated his love of nature and musical gift to touch so many people from all kinds of backgrounds.
It was a sunny afternoon in 1974..I was an 8 year old boy playing with my lovely grandpapa in the verandah..the radio was on..we were listening this very song and were happily playing...today, after years and years, I am listening to this very song sitting alone in the very same verandah..I see the sunshine and remember the happy times I spent with my grandpa...I miss you..
This song is a huge lesson: you don't need much to be happy. Sunshine is a metaphor for life, being alive, being able to see a new day. Thank you very much for such a gift, Mr. Denver (rip)
I feel kind of weird typing something here, but i just wanted to tell anyone smth. about this. I'm 19 years old now and when I was 17 my beloved dad passed away. I visited his grave yesterday as I do it sometimes and thought about a song my dad sang, when he drove with us on vacations. I have never heard this song on my own and before today I never heard this song not coming from my dad. Rest in peace my beautiful father. As I am from Germany I just wanted to say: Ich liebe dich, wo auch immer du grade bist. (eng.: I love you, wherever you are right now.)
Today, December 2, 2020, is my daughter's 37th birthday. Her name is Lianne, and she is a beautiful young woman, inside and out. This song is dedicated to her on her birthday. Lianne, your mother and I are proud of you and love you very much. Love, Dad
This is so incredibly sweet! You sound like a terrific father to have raised a daughter you treasure so much, i hope she realizes how lucky she is to have a father like you!

This was my favorite song when I was a little girl (age 6). Fortunately, I have heard it many times since (though still not enough). I was lucky enough to attend one of his last concerts at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in February 1997. I am forever blessed!

I'm a 60yr old taxi driver in Spore. Drive at night, 6am, 6am. I got bad car accidents 2X. Nurses, Cops, ambulance around me in the street. They told me, i got no pulse more than 10 minutes, they thought i was dead. I woke up. The nurses couldn't believe their eyes. They hugged me, told me to sit down. I just want to tell you, being dead is not as bad as what people think. In fact i am regret that i woke up. I didn't believe much in GOD before. I was an Engineer, a Christian. The accident changed my perspective. New Year is coming soon. We're all 1 year closer to our death. Christmas is coming too. Jesus born in goat house, dirty, full with goat shit smell. But everybody was happy. Never thought that happy baby must went thru a very2 painful death. Merry Christmas.
Back in high school I was kind of one of the cool kids you know listen to all the cool bands and stuff but I was never embarrassed to say that I loved John denver. I'm crying right now listening to the song it brings me way back I never realized what a beautiful beautiful voice he had. What a waste what a shame
We had vietnam war, the gas embargo, a president who got impeached but in all that we had God pouring down his Spirit on those who love Him what was formally called the Hippi/Jesus movement. Yes times were good
Haven't heard this song in years.. Only came upon it, with the newest Chevrolet commercial, & a beautiful tribute to Alzheimer's.. It made me sad & crying.. Remembering, my Mom, who passed away 10 years ago from Alzheimer's.. RIP, Mom, Love you..
John Denver was the best! I have all his music, but this song, "Sunshine on my Shoulders" always brings tears to my eyes. I love sunshine. It's Heaven to me along with blue skies. And I know John Denver is singing to the Angels in Heaven! I hope to hear him when I get there. God Bless John Denver forever!
We’re going to be playing this at my darling husband’s funeral tomorrow (18/04/2023) - he used to sing it to me and to the kids. It will always remind me of him 💔

My mum sang this to me when she was dying, but still able to sit and have lunch with me..We were in my tiny unit with beautiful views over the water. The sun rays hit the water..she began to sing, beautiful voice..
This song reminds me of the night I became a father for the first time. My newborn daughter slept in my arms while we listened to this song together while my wife slept. It's one of my most cherished memories ❤
❤I always loved John Denver. His music really relates to people and in my life my family and visiting West Virginia to gmas and gps, we always seemed to sing that song, you know.
This song reminds me of growing up in North Carolina during the 1970s ... and riding my bike to Mr Barger's country store while listening to my little red transistor radio that I won at the Rowan County Fair.
This reminds me of my kindergarten/grade 1 teacher from when I lived in North Carolina. She showed me this song when I was in kindergarten. That was 2011. She is now long time retired. I now live so far from home, being in Canada and being misplaced in time. Thank you for bringing me home, though it's temporary, I am grateful
Ever since I was a kid, (I'm 61 now), John Denver has run through my veins. We wore what he wore, sang his songs, and it is he that is responsible for my deep love of the high mountains. His music helped shape me into the person I am today. I wish I made the opportunity to tell him to his face... Don Kisling
I played this song to my disabled rescue chicken just a couple of weeks before he passed. Had him from a baby and raised him in the house just like a puppy. We had a special connection and love for each other that was incredibly rare and special. Life will never be the same without you sweetheart, rest in peace my angel ❤️ time to spread your wings and fly
I had a pet chicken. She would roost on my windowsill by my bed. She would try to get in the house and chase my kids when they played in the yard. We called her Maniac Chicken. She was so awesome. An owl got many neighborhood chickens that year, my son accidentally locked the owl in the coop one night. We caught the owl and released him 50 miles away. It was a neighborhood effort
Oh dear. I also had a little baby chicken named Cabbage. Gosh I loved him. That little baby loved me so much. He also died. Thank u for sharing about ur little angel. God bless.
My wife and I have had so many animals over the years -- chickens included -- and they bring so much beauty into your life. It rips my heart out any time we lose one of them. But each one we've lost is a beautiful memory.
It doesn’t matter what answers I get in my life, no matter how tough they look. This song makes me feel better, rise above, and keep on keepin on… love you John Denver…
I am 49 years old, I've known this song for most of my life and every time I hear this song it makes me tear up, I don't know why but this song just gets to me.
When I was a baby, I was extremely ill. I was in the hospital for two weeks. My mom told me that she would come visit me 20 hours a day, those other four hours she went home to shower and then she would come right back. She told me that one day, she was coming home from the hospital to take a shower. She entered my room, saw my empty baby crib, and started crying. I don’t know when this happened, either on the way home or when she was home, but this song started playing on the radio. I (obviously) survived, and according to my mom, a nurse told her that it was a miracle I lived.
This was my mother's favorite song. She committed suicide in 2009 after battling deppression for many years. Love you, mom. I wish I could play this for you one more time.
Many many years ago, my first true love and I made this our song..he was killed in a car accident a couple of years later. Listening to this, with my eyes closed, I remember our happy days spent at the lake, watching baby ducks in the reeds...swimming, sunbathing, playing on the swings, we had such a short time together. And now, sunshine makes me cry....
My Mum used to play it to me when I was a kid aswell. She passed away and I've chosen it to be played at her funeral next Tuesday.I'd give my life for 5 more minutes with her.Take care of yourself x
My dad and his brother loved this song. My uncle passed away years ago with this song playing at his funeral. My dad just passed away and I am currently sitting in my car listening to this. I miss my angels so much. But I know they are together and at peace now.

I can play and sing every song he wrote. I remember once, playing this song, my father came up behind me. I didn't know he was there. I sung my heart out. When I turned around and saw him, he was kneeling and crying...miss my Daddy.
I read so many of these lovely comments about loss and love associated with a memory of this son, touched but without crying... Then I read yours, Jacki... Blessings in Christ's name upon you!
I love the affect this song has on anybody, no matter the generation. I was born in 1993 and my parents would play this song and now it's apart of my life. I sing it to my daughter and her soon to be brother growing inside. The timeless beauty and meaning of this song is forever....
John's "death" was a freemason hoax. Many celebrities fake their deaths. The freemasons love to "kill off" their puppets by their song lyrics ... John sang, "I'm Leaving On A Jet Plane" .. so ha ha, they faked his death in a fake plane crash. Faking their death is how celebrities retire .. or for various other reasons, but MANY celebrities fake their death.
Dear Lord, If I ever die, please let me here this song as I go so that I have no fear....Also, give everyone the opportunity to feel the way I do when I hear this song at least once in their lives.
Many years ago, the girl that I thought would be the love of my life had to make the decision to return to her home in Germany, and I had to remain. I drove her to the airport for our final goodbyes. On the way, I played this song for her as she cried. Although it broke my heart to let her go, I wanted her to know what I wanted only the best for her and whoever she loved in the future. I left her there, and drove away. Years later, I was assigned to Desert Storm, when I received a letter from my Mother, my friend knew that I would serve in a war zone, and asked my Mother to remind me of this song, and the time we had together. She is married to another now, and has two children, and every day, I wish her sunshine.
Words spoken like a true man. Being a man doesn't mean being hard and harsh except when called upon to do so but also asks us to be gentle and loving. Job well done sir! Semper Fi
Bloody hell mate , I have a similar story from a year and a bit ago. She was from Denver Colorado although originally from Houston, she came to Australia just to break my heart . Drove her to the airport knowing I’d never see her again. Agonising. Feel for ya .
This song definitely has meant a lot to my wife and I. My wife is a stroke survivor and while she was in the rehabilitation center, I would take her outside whenever possible. I would play this video for her and she would enjoy the music as the sun was shining on us.
Not to sound too depressing but my mum just died and wanted this track played at her funeral RIP Mum You deserved so much more than i could ever give you.
I decided to visit my childhood and stay awhile in the sunhine...
My mom used to sing this to me before I went to sleep when I was little. From the day I was born to the day she died she called me sunshine. Rest in peace, mom. I love you.

I played this song at my daughter’s funeral 14 years ago. She was 22 months when she passed and she was our ray of sunshine and guardian angel. I can hardly listen to this song without getting choked up.
God bless you. Not depressing at all my the spirit of God's eternal sunshine fill your soul
No words can express my sorrow for the loss of your baby. God bless.
😭
So sorry buddy
Heaven needs cherubs, and sometimes our families must give up one of our own to fill their ranks.
this song made me happy at age 12.....
This was one of the songs my daughter asked to hear as she was dying. RIP Alyssa.
May memories of the good times you shared with her help ease your grief because words alone cannot.
RIP Alyssa.
She will always be with you
I was born in 1991 and I'm glad my parents had good taste in music 😊❤
The sun misses john Denver.
Yes!
Me too......I love my LED ZEPPELIN but I love Great Music & J. Denver absolutely gave us a lot of it.....God Bless You for your kind words......

After reading your comment, I went from remembering my old comment and thinking it was funny, to feeling bad, to remembering why I made the comment in the first place.
Sorry for your loss, be strong
I picture a new mom singing this to her little baby boy, beautiful. I can't imagine your pain, I'm so sorry.
I don't know you but we're part of the same human family. I love you and I am sorry for your loss.

So sorry, but so glad that the music brings her back. Live the lost Summer, if you can, my dear.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Simple, clear, and heartfelt.
I like Annie’s song or leaving on a jet plane a bit more but I agree
Beautiful heartfelt comment. Thank you.

@@FloridaManMattyI agree with this 1,000%
(P.S. thanks for letting me know about John Denver’s dad! I had no idea his aviation background… I’ll have to Google it. So Interesting!)

We played this at my grandma's funeral this past June. I've had a lot of loss in my life recently and this song makes me realize that even though someone or something is gone, they will always be with you in your heart and the sunshine reminds us of the good and the bad times. Life goes fast. Don't forget to say I love you every day.

Without a doubt...
Yess!
You said it 😊. Best decade of my life with the music

Wow that’s nice. I’m happy for you so when was the first time you fell in love with the song ?

God bless u; I know what it's like to sit in a car after a loved one is lost.

I can play and sing every song he wrote. I remember once, playing this song, my father came up behind me. I didn't know he was there. I sung my heart out. When I turned around and saw him, he was kneeling and crying...miss my Daddy.
Incomparable! So many hits that will live on for so many decades. Is this your favorite?
Lovely :)
😢🥰
I read so many of these lovely comments about loss and love associated with a memory of this son, touched but without crying... Then I read yours, Jacki... Blessings in Christ's name upon you!
wow mustve been good
I love the affect this song has on anybody, no matter the generation. I was born in 1993 and my parents would play this song and now it's apart of my life. I sing it to my daughter and her soon to be brother growing inside. The timeless beauty and meaning of this song is forever....
Congratulations 🎉
One of the most beautiful songs ever . Rip. John.
Amen.

Yes. He have us so many beautiful songs. Eagle and the Hawk is another favorite.
I'm 74. I call my lady Sunshine. This song is perfect
Dear Lord, If I ever die, please let me here this song as I go so that I have no fear....Also, give everyone the opportunity to feel the way I do when I hear this song at least once in their lives.
Thank you
Jesus Christ would make you feel this way all the time
Many years ago, the girl that I thought would be the love of my life had to make the decision to return to her home in Germany, and I had to remain.
@Reema A Afwan….I'm glad you were able to go home again.
Words spoken like a true man. Being a man doesn't mean being hard and harsh except when called upon to do so but also asks us to be gentle and loving. Job well done sir! Semper Fi
take out this manly wet from my eyes sir
Bloody hell mate , I have a similar story from a year and a bit ago. She was from Denver Colorado although originally from Houston, she came to Australia just to break my heart . Drove her to the airport knowing I’d never see her again. Agonising. Feel for ya .
I wish there's a gracious man like you for me in my life.
This song definitely has meant a lot to my wife and I. My wife is a stroke survivor and while she was in the rehabilitation center, I would take her outside whenever possible.
I would play this video for her and she would enjoy the music as the sun was shining on us.
He sang so nicely. And I loved him in O God.
Not to sound too depressing but my mum just died and wanted this track played at her funeral RIP Mum You deserved so much more than i could ever give you.
My condolences Justin.

@@debshancock7793 I get you. My mom died in 1997 and tears come to my eyes when I see the fall colors she loved.
RIP moms...
John didn't just sing /write great songs. He helped us to aspire to be a better people.
Something we've lost.
This song made me cry uncontrollably when I was just a little boy.. no one knew why and I couldn't explain it to them. 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Life does not always explain itself :)
I did the same as a little boy - except the song (rather embarrassingly) was A Different Corner by George Michael 😂🤦♂️
The melody is sad.
Not embarrassing! I just found that song again recently and it’s sad as an adult too.
I get this💞
Big time memories !
Such a pure clean vocal, simple lyrics but hell do they ever evoke the deepest emotions.Such an underrated talent, one of the best xxx
Another talent, gone too soon:(
So agree! I'm 70 now but how I remember how his many many songs spoke to my spirit and soul back when younger and even now touch me deeply.
This music here cleanses the soul.
+Erica Winfrey I needed to hear his voice tonight so beautiful
