No, the Citizens United Supreme Court decision in 2010, 14 years ago, was where it was decided that money is free speech, which is an absolutely horrific miscarriage of justice. It wasn't in the seventies.
It's not 1 event, but death by 1000 cuts. Tailspin by Steven Brill is a good read on the topic, which is like this video... dated and it's worse now, but covers the multitude of ways neoliberal economic policies have led to the status quo.
@grumpyoldman6503 it's precedent. Citizens United was the tipping point that made the biggest difference by far. It needed chipping away to get there, but the huge, decisive blow was, without question, Citizens United.
@singlesideman nah, our goose was cooked *well* before Citizen's United. The majority of Americans have no wealth whatsoever. No savings, no emergency fund, no retirement, rented property, financed vehicle. And that, sadly, is better off than a sizable portion who have debt on top of that.
the average American also has about $8,500 in credit card debt, which keeps going up and up every year and more and more Americans have to finance just basic substance on credit

UBI will drive inflation, universal healthcare (not medicare) would be a good idea if you could keep corruption out, free public college would just make more problems. Increased prices from anything that uses cheap, low skilled labour (from deporting all the people that usually do those jobs) which will mostly effect construction and, more importantly, food prices. A big problem with this theory, however, is that a LOT of people have completely given up on the idea that their lives can be improved at all (to the point that they’re automatically distrustful of anybody who claims that they will make things better), so the only thing they really feel they can get is the _worsening_ of conditions for others.
It definitely wasn't and isn't good, but IMO was more the last straw of legalizing money in politics and therefore the end of the voice of the people in elections.
For my money, if there was a turning point, it was 1982 when stock buybacks were made legal again. Then Wall St sociopathy was all it took to continue the slide to where we are now.
The 70s was the Powell Memorandum. That's where it all started.
Your message is just what we need to hear right now.
The majority of Americans have no wealth whatsoever. No savings, no emergency fund, no retirement, rented property, financed vehicle. And that, sadly, is better off than a sizable portion who have debt on top of that.
Part of that reason is USA does not have a national healthcare program.
the average American also has about $8,500 in credit card debt, which keeps going up and up every year and more and more Americans have to finance just basic substance on credit

UBI, Medicare for All, and free public college would go SO FAR to make the US the country it was meant to be, the most prosperous country in the world where you could start on the street with nothing and actually achieve the American dream.
All this can be done WHILE having a balanced budget, for the mere fact that these programs actually save the government money!
They don't want to do that, because the Christian lunatics want a dystopian dark return to the 1950's and it will not happen.
America's greatest asset is our human infrastructure. A healthy, well housed, well-fed, well-educated populace is exactly what you're talking about.
UBI will drive inflation, universal healthcare (not medicare) would be a good idea if you could keep corruption out, free public college would just make more problems. Free college degrees would quickly mean nothing and prevent most of the young workforce to meet the labor markets. This would just become another boondoggle. A big problem with this theory, however, is that a LOT of people have completely given up on the idea that their lives can be improved at all (to the point that they’re automatically distrustful of anybody who claims that they will make things better), so the only thing they really feel they can get is the _worsening_ of conditions for others.
