We'd be so grateful for more information on suppliers of your cladding and fibreglassing kit How did you get the external corners of your cladding around your window so sharp, how did you cut them, are they mitred? Please can you let us know the supplier of your window glass We've located your glass clamps of ebay but wonder how you fixed them to ensure alignment and verticality when you used the split faced slate as your coping??? What did you use to adhere your cladding? How you don't mind all the wisdom however we are both new to this and want to achieve a good result for our first pond Many thanks again Maria and Abby xXx🥰
Hi Maria, that's brilliant, good to have you onboard 🍻 The cladding on the outside of the pond are split faced tiles. They are black maxi split face and I got them from here mrs-stone-store.com/natural-stone-tiles/mo101/eco-black-split-face-slate-tile-600x150x8-20-maxi/ Very easy to apply using a cheap exterior grab adhesive. The diall one from B&Q is fine. For the corners I just cut the tiles with a little grinder and butted them up to each other but if you want a neater job you can notch out evry other tile on one piece and then alternating tiles on the other piece so they fit together at th ecorner a bit like a jigsaw piece. You cant mitre them as they are made of slate and are very brittle, they would just break apart if you tried. My window came from a little glass company in St Helens, Merseyside that I use for all glass for my business but any local glass merchant will do it for you. If you can stretch to using optiwhite its much nicer as its very clear with no green tinge to it. The fibreglass I get from Fibreglass direct. They do kits for ponds and you just need to enter your surface area www.fibreglassdirect.co.uk/fibreglass-pond-kit.html In terms of fixing the posts. I'll be honest its a bloody nightmare on the split face tiles as they are so uneven. You just need to try and put them on a flat bit and if you can think about this when fixing the tiles it would be better. They come with bolts that you drill a hole for and then just knock them in and screw them down but as I say, its not easy with these tiles. It may be a better option to actually drill holes in the tiles so the post base sits down and the flat block underneath. I think that's everything but if I've missed anything let me know 👍👍
Hi Maria, my phone keeps saying I have a new comment from you but I can't find one. Did you post another comment after the one I replied to? I'm confused (it doesn't take much).
Hi Baden, sorry I didn't reply, I hadn't seen your earlier comment. I've just searched and found that it was held for approval, along with several others. Learning all the time. Thanks for the comments, its really appreciated. I've so much I'd like to do but its just really difficult, much harder than I realised. I'll get better though, I'm not about to give up.
Wow, as a novice I was lead to believe what came out of the pond filter was good clean water...I obviously wouldn't try drinking it! Dazzle, again you give a logical thought proving logic. I think that the price of used Easy Pods with be going up as you bring us into the fold! Thank you for your expertise B-D
Hi hi, sorry for the late reply. I use Spindrfiter bottom drains which have the aerated dome built in. The original was invented by a guy who trades as Alternative Aquatics. They are a bit more expensive than some others but I have never had an issue with one and I've been sing them for about 20 years or more now so I can recommend them.
I am so glad I found your channel, you explain complex and important issues to improve our koi's health and happiness in a straight forward way that is easy to understand. I used to only backwash 1-2x per week, when you explained nothing changes for my fish until I get that waste out, I now do my best to clean the filter every day.
Hi just started up 3 weeks ago 6 koi fish in a 1350 gallon pond running. Nexus 200 and a tempest Would you still recommend cleaning the nexus and tempest everyday as in the video or would you let the filter system run to build up the new pond Filter gel and good bacteria has been added Many thanks
Hi mate, I know I've spoken to you about this now but just to expand on it. I cleaned my pod every day from day one and it had no negative impact on my filter start up time. I had practically no new pond syndrome and fed from day one, only stopping for the odd day here and there. Bacteria live on surfaces so I don't buy in to the idea that you flush them away when cleaning the filter or that would happen all the time.
Hi Andy, I've never seen it before to be honest. When you said Tetra I expected it to be poor as they generally don't make decent koi products, more general pond fish stuff that they try to sell in the koi market. However, on the face of it that food looks ok based on the ingredient list. Might be worth a go. Let me know if you try and how it goes 👍
Hi mate, the trickle flow is set with a valve to whatever I want it. I calculated how much I lose when I flush my filter and set the trickle so that it takes 12 hours to replace the water lost. So when I flush my filter in the evening the level drops but it has been replaced by the trickle by the following morning.
I notice you air is high velocity which as you have explained is a good thing, can you turn this down if need be or is it a case of all or nothing, thanks
Hi Dougie, you can fit a valve and restrict the air but I don't like to as I believe it shortens the life of the pump, particularly the diaphragm. You cause the pump to run at higher pressure to overcome the restriction. A lot of people do this though and get away with it. Personally I always want more air , never less 😁😁
Hi there I have an hose lock pressure filter you know the one where you turn the handle, would you suggest that i do this every day. I do regular tests on the water, i change the uv bulb every year, I feed my fish on tetra pellets but fish don’t seem to grow a lot.
Hi Michael. Pressure filters are known for harboring bad bacteria inside as they are sealed and you cant access inside to clean them and check them properly so I would definitely clean a pressure filter every day if possible. The lack of growth is down to the food I suspect. Tetra food sticks don't contain a great deal of nutritional value for koi. You really need a specific koi food. Have a look at the Coppens foods or even the medikoi stuff. A good quality wheatgerm or all season food (during the summer months), will suffice 🍻👍🍻👍🍻
Great video thank you. I run a pump fed EA pod and flush once a week. After watching that I will certainly up my game. My ownly concern is that flushing daily will have a major impact on the biological cycle. I only have the pod and EA UV so nothing else to back up the bio side. Hope you can advise. Many thanks Adam
Hi Adam, no problem at all for the bio filtration mate, when you flush a pod you aerate it for a few minutes. If you consider a nexus filter, the bio is aerated 24/7 in them as its considered better. The weak or dead bacteria are believed to be flushed off allowing stronger, healthier ones to grow. Survival of the fittest. I flushed mine every single day from the first day I switched it on and had no problem at all maturing it. I actually had more or less no new pond syndrome and fed from day one.
like your vid mate, we all have our own opnions on how to get fish to grow, mine our 25 percent water changes every week, water tempurature around 28 c good airation plus i feed my fish cat fish food
Hi Humphrey, that's very true Sir. I don't disagree with anything you said apart from maybe the food. I believe that koi food is engineered specifically to give the best nutrition to koi so I only use koi specific food but if it works then maybe I'm missing out 🍻🍻🍻
Hi Paul, I really wouldn't go that far 😁 I really advocate anyone building a pond for koi to put a bottom drain in. Its a real game changer and without one its a much more problematic and stressful hobby. That said, not everyone can fit a bottom drain for one reason or another and so I definitely recommend a retro drain in that instance. They are not as good as a full bottom drain but they are a lot better than a pump sat on the bottom of the pond. They work well when set up properly with the right pump and flow rate. Are you thinking of adding one to a pump fed filter?
Hi Paul, yes you will definitely see an improvement in the cleanliness of your pond if you fit a retro drain, they are perfect for your situation. It will keep the bottom of your pond a lot cleaner and reduce maintenance etc for you 👍👍
Hey there, what would you advise that I feed my Koi’s on? I am sort of new to the hobby I inherited two Koi’s that are 24 years old and was fed Tetra Pond Food Sticks most of their lives so the rest of my gang all size and age are now on the same. The two old ones are rather large Koi’s..What would you consider a good and reasonable price and healthy food I should look into. Many thanks for your help and time. David.
Hi David, given their age you don't want to feed them high protein food. This would also upset your water etc so I would look for a wheatgerm food. The Nishikoi wheatgerm is a good all round product that wont cost to much and is readily available in most aquatic outlets. Failing that have a look for the Coppens products and again go for the wheatgerm 👍👍
@@DazzleKoi Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. The only issue there, I have Koi’s that range from 1 year old and up to 3/4 year old. So not sure that approach will work for all?
@@Mr777dmp Hi David, you can go up to an all season food if you prefer but it just causes more pollution in your water and the koi don't really benefit. I feed wheatgerm all year round, its all the food they need, particularly if you get a good quality one. If you want an all season food again the coppens stuff is very good. All the dealers own brand food is coppens.
I found this all very helpful. I have just built a new pond at a new house and would love to have the wall effect you have. Are they tiles? If so where did you get them?
Hi Alan, yes they are split face tiles, these are the ones I used mrs-stone-store.com/natural-stone-tiles/mo101/eco-black-split-face-slate-tile-600x150x8-20-maxi/
@@DazzleKoi Hi Dazzle. Aquaponics is a combination of hydroponics and aquacultur. It uses a filter medium of lava rocks which then become colonized with bacteria. Nh3 - nitrite - nitrate. Then the plants growing in media use the nitrate and the nitrogen cycle is complete. It's the same principle as a planted tank or putting pothos on top of the tank. The only difference is that you'll have a pot plant next to your tank. It's biologically very elegant. It's like a bakki shower but with plants growing in it. I ran a trial system of 1 tomato pot plant and a small tank. The system uses more water and thus regular top ups are required. This is a good thing. The aquarium chemistry was very stable. I kept a log book but eventually stopped logging because the numbers were so good. Nice chatting. I love your channel and psssion. Keep up the good work. You've got another subscriber. Cheers Fred
Hi Fred, sorry but I've only just seen this comment, the youtube tab for handling comments leaves a lot to be desired. Thanks for taking the time to post this info, it sounds very interesting indeed. I'm going to have a good read up on this, thanks again 🍻👍🍻
Is there a problem if you excess dissolve oxygen in the pond!? What may be the cause of tail rot if the water quality is good? Thanks in advance for your advice
Hi mate, no problem from excess oxygen. Fin rot is a bacteria problem that strikes when koi are weak such as in very cold water. It happens a lot at this time of year when aeromonas bacteria are active but your koi immune system is still weak. Or poor water quality and stress can cause it to. Best treatment is warm water. Lots of fresh clean water changes, salt can help as can chloramine T
Lovely pond, fish look happy. I’ve often thought a pond that size would be too small for koi? I really want to keep koi one day but I’d always want over 3000 gallons. I know this would make the running and would cost more. Another thing what is the electric bill (roughly) like running a pond like this?
Hi Luke, if you have the right filtration and put the work in you can keep 6 or 7 Koi in a pond of this size but definitely bigger is better. Costs vary hugely depending on what you have. This pond has a water pump, an air pump and a UV so electricity costs approx. £200 a year. My previous pond was much bigger, had 3 pumps, 3 air pumps, auto feeder, heating system, 2 UV's etc etc and cost approx. £3800 a year. Then you have to think about buying the koi, food, water changes if you are on a water meter, treatments, dichlorination, test kits etc etc Its not a cheap hobby unfortunately but if you are sensible you can make it affordable. Best wishes 🍻👍🎅
Can you run a easy pod running a pump fed,I don't want the filter high, but the same level as my pond? I'm running a 6 bay filter which like you said,a pain to clean.mike
Hi Mike, yes you can run the Pod pump fed. They actually come set up for pump fed and include all the bits you need to convert it to gravity fed. What size is your pond?
Hi Lisa, I have a spindrifter bottom drain which has a air dome attached to the top. The pump I use is an EA70 litre pump which sits in my filter shed and has a pipe running underground to the air dome.
Yes your right you should take waste out but you do need it for the ammonia nitrate and nitrate so my point is over cleaning can be bad you can cause a spike in pneumonia which is far worse the bacteria will eat the waste once a week is fine maybe even overkill most people do it once a month now there’s a lot of factors if you’re feeding 6-7 times a day for optimal growth I change my water in my pond 80% every week which makes up for me not cleaning the filter I also clean the filter every two weeks but my filter is 100 gallon filter
Hi Cody, bacteria dont eat waste, they breed in it and eventually infect your fish. You are confusing aeromonas bacteria which are harmful and cause no positive effect , with nitrifying bacteria (nitrobactor and nitrosomonas) which consume ammonia and nitrite. There is no positive benefit to leaving waste in your filter. It is simply a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and it puts your koi at risk. Once a week is a minimum, once a month is quite frankly unacceptable. Most people do no do it once a month. Changing water is not to make up for poor filter maintenance. Changing water refreshes minerals and dilutes nitrate.
Hi mate, they go out in ot the mud ponds during warmer months and come back inside around october time. I dont really think anyone can say for sure why they grow so well. They are void of minerals and natural food so low pH, huge amounts of volume per koi, and good food 10 or 12 times a day.
Hi Chris , I highly recommend Hikari foods. They are expensive but they are the best I have ever used. Hikari wheatgerm is perfect at this time of year and the growth food in summer. You can even feed Hikari wheatgerm all year round if you have older fish only, say all over 3 years old 🍻🍻🎅🎅🍻🍻
Daz how do you measure the oxygen content in your water, pretty confident mines pretty high but after watching this video I’d like to check the numbers, also you mentioned about any recommendations for videos for me a basic video on how to install the split face tiles on your blockwork would be good as that’s one of my next jobs, cheers mate 👍🏼
Hi Gary, for oxygen I just use a standard dropper test kit. I have the JBL one but there are a couple of others as well. If you haven't seen it I did a video on oxygen and I mention the testing in there ua-cam.com/video/1e4nRqDKJ1g/v-deo.html The tiles are dead easy. I used the exterior grab adhesive from B&Q, the Diall one. Its cheap as chips and much easier to use than tile adhesive. Make sure to get the exterior one though. Cut them with a little angle grinder. They are meant to look rustic so no real experience or skills needed.
Hi Ashley, I have a constant trickle of fresh water going in to the pond and an overflow taking it away to waste. So I clean my filter in the evening and by morning it is topped back up to the correct depth. Have a look at my video on my trickle in/out for info on how to set this up ua-cam.com/video/74wYHIyVKl0/v-deo.html
Hi daz it's me again! Can you shed some light on this changed the food to jpd shogun all season not cheap £75 supposed to be highly digestible introduced it gradually over 2 weeks now the pond is full of free floating fish s--it!!?
Hi Col, I haven't come across that before but I'll give you my thoughts and maybe between us we can come up with something. If we can assume nothing else has changed it must be down to the food. JPD is very good quality food. Your koi have always crapped, they haven't just started, so it can only have become more buoyant for some reason. Are they now assimilating more of the food and as such there is less substance to the waste? To counter that I've fed very high quality foods in the past and I haven't had this issue. But maybe your particular system is just more sensitive to it? Water flows and air flows 'blowing' it around rather than directing it to the drain/pump? Then, is it permanent or do they need time to adjust to the new food? More questions than answers I'm afraid but I think all you can do for now is nothing. Give it a few weeks and see if it changes when they have had longer to get used to it.
Brilliant video pal, I’m about to start my build just after Christmas hopefully, I’m going for a very similar setup/style to yours, already got the spindrifter, eazypod and evo30 uv, I’m considering building the initial frame out of sleepers and lining it with thick ply before fibre glassing, only because I get any timber for free as I work with it. Have you any thoughts or ideas regarding adding strength to the front as like you say in your video, the glass holds a lot of pressure back!! I’m thinking loads of brackets and pinning it with lengths of rebar??
Hi Steve, the fact you are fibreglassing it is a good thing as it adds a lot of strength as well. I assume you are going for an infinity window? I think you are on the right tracks with what you suggest to be honest. drill down through the sleepers and rebar (or stud) knocked down through the holes (depending what you do for a base you might be able to tie them in to the base too). Plenty big screws where you can. Steel angle brackets would also be a good addition, I think the ones you want are called dragon ties. Used for holding roof timbers down to wall plates but they'll work well if you turn them upside down. The ply will spread the weight as well as the fibreglass.
I would love to clean my filter, but unfortunately some tadpoles found their way into it. Right now I'm waiting for the tadpoles to mature enough for me to able to catch them and move them to the wildlife pond.
@@DazzleKoi I can probably get most of them out now as they've grown big enough for my nets to hold them now. I'm just waiting for some sun and a bit of free time. I don't think it will be a quick job and I want enough time to do it properly. I wouldn't put them back in the filter though. I've got two ponds on the same water cycle. The bottom pond is where the £25 4/6 inch koi are; they might not be show winners for size, but I like them. I got them from selective koi near Norwich. They're much better quality than the £5 cheap stuff I used to have that Mr Otter decided to help himself to. He only left me with a single golden Orfe. The upper pond is for wildlife and plants to take out the nitrates. The whole thing is about 15000 L of water. Not even Salmon could make it up the waterfall that connects them. The only predators the toad tadpoles would have to worry about in the top pond are the newts and the ducks that have been visiting the pond. There are already frog tadpoles in the top pond so they wont be lonely.
@@DazzleKoi I would say I have half of them out at the moment. They seem to be at different stages, as some have already lost their tails. I'm usually able to catch about 10-20 of the tailless ones before they hide too deep for me to reach. I have a go several times a day and over the last 3 days have probably moved about 200 or so.
This was posted just about a year ago, wasn't it? You've got the order slightly wrong, the most important thing is the water temperature. There is no doubt that anyone with experience of keeping KOI in both Japan and the UK will agree with that. The water temperature should be kept above 25°C for about a month and a half if possible. imgur.com/ArvgqB0 And feed as often as possible. It is basically forbidden to add nets or new KOI during the feeding period in order not to interfere with their appetite. And I can't believe that SHOW is held during the summer. To be honest, it would be an outrage to us Japanese hobbyists to transport or move them during this period.
Hi mate, whilst I don't disagree with you as such, I think there isn't really an order so much because without one the others fail. So yes, temp is vital, but if you had the right temp and then fed poor quality food you wont get good results. I think you need everything to come together to get optimum growth. Yes this was one of my first ever videos. I think it probably needs updating at some point as I'm more confident in front of the camera now and can edit video better etc
@@DazzleKoi So I hope you can find out what's going on at the moment. As someone else said, if you can't change the current situation in the UK, where all events are concentrated in mid-summer, which has been in place for a long time, how about re-scheduling our high summer feeding period for September, October and November? Of course, you'd have to pay for utility bills. A complete feeding period of preferably a month and a half or more is indispensable.
Hi, sorry for the delay, I've been on holiday, When I had a much bigger pond and much better quality koi I certainly did that and I think a lot of high end keepers still do that but where I am at now I can't justify that kind of expense to be honest. When I retire from working and move to my final home I may build a pond that is more akin to that level of koi but for now I just enjoy keeping a few koi and having somewhere to sit a relax in the evening after work.

Very easy to apply using a cheap exterior grab adhesive.
They do kits for ponds and you just need to enter your surface area www.fibreglassdirect.co.uk/fibreglass-pond-kit.html
In terms of fixing the posts.

I am so glad I found your channel, you explain complex and important issues to improve our koi's health and happiness in a straight forward way that is easy to understand. I used to only backwash 1-2x per week, when you explained nothing changes for my fish until I get that waste out, I now do my best to clean the filter every day.
Hi Loni and thank you for your kind words 👍👍
Hi just started up 3 weeks ago
6 koi fish in a 1350 gallon pond running. Nexus 200 and a tempest
Would you still recommend cleaning the nexus and tempest everyday as in the video or would you let the filter system run to build up the new pond
Filter gel and good bacteria has been added
Many thanks
Hi mate, I know I've spoken to you about this now but just to expand on it. I cleaned my pod every day from day one and it had no negative impact on my filter start up time. I had practically no new pond syndrome and fed from day one, only stopping for the odd day here and there. Bacteria live on surfaces so I don't buy in to the idea that you flush them away when cleaning the filter or that would happen all the time.
Another great video 👍what do you think of tetra koi beauty food look good
Hi Andy, I've never seen it before to be honest. When you said Tetra I expected it to be poor as they generally don't make decent koi products, more general pond fish stuff that they try to sell in the koi market. However, on the face of it that food looks ok based on the ingredient list.
Might be worth a go. Let me know if you try and how it goes 👍

Hi mate, and thank you. Welcome aboard 🍻👍🍻👍🍻
Hi, great video but does the trickle feed keep up with the daily water change. Thanks
New to channel great info every day a school day keep them coming 👍
Thanks, will do! 👍
You are right what you said about the fish and cleaning out of the water
Hi Graham, thoughts for taking time to comment Sir, really appreciate that 🍻🍻
First time watching your video great content something to think about!👍 I am now a subscriber 😀 thank you
Thanks Andrew, welcome to the channel 👍
I believe that koi food is engineered specifically to give the best nutrition to koi so I only use koi specific food but if it works then maybe I'm missing out 🍻🍻🍻
@@DazzleKoi thanks for the reply, here in thailand thats what all the carp farmers use forgpt to mention salt in the pond
Yet another great video you are a top man with great knowledge, what are your thoughts of retro bottom drain?
Hi Paul, I really wouldn't go that far 😁
I really advocate anyone building a pond for koi to put a bottom drain in.
@@DazzleKoi yes I have wooden raised pond with the pump sat on bottom of pond feeding a pressure filter and out to a blade water filter waterfall

@@DazzleKoi
Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Nice work. Spot on content. What is your opinion on aquaponics as a filter system?
Hi Fred, I have to admit to being totally unfamiliar with aquaponics. I'm going to have a good read up on it though, sounds very interesting 👍
Cheers Fred

Then you have to think about buying the koi, food, water changes if you are on a water meter, treatments, dichlorination, test kits etc etc
Its not a cheap hobby unfortunately but if you are sensible you can make it affordable.
Best wishes 🍻👍🎅

What's kind of Air pump do you at the bottom of your pond?
Hi Lisa, I have a spindrifter bottom drain which has a air dome attached to the top. The pump I use is an EA70 litre pump which sits in my filter shed and has a pipe running underground to the air dome.
Brill advice. Cheers
Thanks mate, appreciate that 👍
Yes your right you should take waste out but you do need it for the ammonia nitrate and nitrate so my point is over cleaning can be bad you can cause a spike in pneumonia which is far worse the bacteria will eat the waste once a week is fine maybe even overkill most people do it once a month now there’s a lot of factors if you’re feeding 6-7 times a day for optimal growth I change my water in my pond 80% every week which makes up for me not cleaning the filter I also clean the filter every two weeks but my filter is 100 gallon filter
Thank you

Curious to know in Japan, how clean are those expensive koi fishes grow in their outdoor large mud ponds?
Hi mate, they go out in ot the mud ponds during warmer months and come back inside around october time. I dont really think anyone can say for sure why they grow so well. They are void of minerals and natural food so low pH, huge amounts of volume per koi, and good food 10 or 12 times a day.
Can I ask is it them brick slips that you've cladded your wall in?

Hi Gary, for oxygen I just use a standard dropper test kit. I have the JBL one but there are a couple of others as well. If you haven't seen it I did a video on oxygen and I mention the testing in there ua-cam.com/video/1e4nRqDKJ1g/v-deo.html
The tiles are dead easy. I used the exterior grab adhesive from B&Q, the Diall one. Its cheap as chips and much easier to use than tile adhesive. Make sure to get the exterior one though. Cut them with a little angle grinder. They are meant to look rustic so no real experience or skills needed.
@@DazzleKoi cheers mate I’ll have a look at that video,

@@DazzleKoi thanks for your reply its been going in for 5 weeks now! I can see the pigeons having a good few meals on it. 😁👍

Brilliant video pal,
I’m about to start my build just after Christmas hopefully, I’m going for a very similar setup/style to yours, already got the spindrifter, eazypod and evo30 uv,
I’m considering building the initial frame out of sleepers and lining it with thick ply before fibre glassing, only because I get any timber for free as I work with it.
Oh dear. It might be a good few weeks. Could you not catch them up and clean it then put the back in?
Hi mate, did you have any success with them?
@@DazzleKoi I would say I have half of them out at the moment. They seem to be at different stages, as some have already lost their tails. Yeah cheap food for koi is like giving them McDonald's .
