This is quite possibly the best interview I've ever watched, completely engaging start to finish. I'm blown away by this interviewer's ability to match Cary's energy and delivery in a way that supports and enhances the whole situation while not once stealing the focus. Brilliant, indeed!
I first saw Princess Bride on a transatlantic flight. Fell immediately in love with it, and was one of the best PR spokespersons for the film. Harassed everyone I knew to watch it until they did. I know they did because the next time I saw them they thanked me profusely for turning them onto it. The Princess Bride will prove to be The Wizard of Oz of all the generations to come. Well done! Love, Joy & Blessings in Absolute Abundance to all involved! ✨💖✨
He's English by birth. Don't exactly know why he uses an American accent ( strongly peppered with an English one ) in an interview. Very agreeable ' chap.'
When we moved halfway across the country and crammed myself, wife, and two children into my sister in laws spare bedroom until we found a place, this was one of the DVDs we had on hand. Both my wife and I sleep with the television on, and we would put this on repeat for the night. Man I cannot speak highly enough about the place this movie holds with my family. To this day I tell my wife Shut up witch.....because I know how she will respond. You guys truly made a timeless movie. This is a movie my grandchildren will see, I have no doubt about that.
That's sweet!💜 Irony being that my husband and I did that with Forrest Gump for over 3 years at one point because of my chronic Vertigo so that film also has a MAJOR home in the heart of our marriage. That Robin Wright is just MADE to watch act on a loop I guess.😊
Every time my husband and I are watching a movie or tv show where someone falls downhill, one of us will say, “Aaaaas youuuu wiiiiiiiish!” Cannot help it.
My favorite related story with a tribute to The Princess Bride is when my work’s assistant had to justify a full size car to accommodate my 6’5” height. Her four word justification was “driver of unusual size.”
Princess Bride was one of the greatest films a kid could possibly grow up with. Along with other classics like The Goonies, or Labyrinth, or The Dark Crystal, or the Neverending Story. The 80s and 90s were a cultural treasure trove compared to the nonsense kids have to contend with today. I was so very lucky to have been born when I was. What a time to be a kid.
Don't just reminisce, continue the tradition. My kids have seen every one of them and continue to re-watch them every now and then. I will not deprive them of such magic.
@@pinkyhotmessx69 It is unfortunate, the downside of Napster-- ended up being the end of physical medium. It's awesome that we can stream, yet it is not good that we no longer have physical possession of our beloved songs and movies. That needs to change.
Cary is an amazing man! I was heartbroken when he suffered a medical emergency and was hospitalized earlier this year. I loved this interview and immediately purchased his book for my Kindle! The book is terrific. My husband and I saw it at the movies and when it was over no one in the theater moved we all sat there we didn’t want it to be over. We absolutely loved it.
How can you forget his AMAZING performance as the lead in "Crush", opposite a young Alicia Silverstone?! Then there are bit parts like what he did in "Twister," but any real fan of his MUST see crush.
@@ncurry1968 That movie was amazing. I'm so sorry you hated it. Cary was amazing and his facial expressions are great! I have that movie memorized from start to finish.
William Goldman said the writing of The Princess Bride flowed out of him, and the screenplay did the same. This movie was blessed. One of the greatest films ever. The fencing scene was brilliant, a testament to the hard work Mandy and Cary were willing to put into it.
My favorite teacher ever, high school English teacher, asked us to read this book as an assignment. I thought, "The Princess Bride? Is this some book for little girls?" I wanted no part of it but wound up loving it. And I still watch the movie every few years. Still love it to this day.
We wore out our first video tape of The Princess Bride...ran thru a DVD...now on a Blu-ray version. One of our all-time favorites, and always will be. Great interview.
In the late 80's, my men's group pastor at my church, showed it for us, and said that the care with which you "treated" buttercup was a genuinely romantic gesture, and we should pay attention to our wives with such care. It's been a favorite ever since.
I could watch Cary Elwes read a phone book. His knack for mimicry & voices is impressive, but i love his best. Such a true gentleman. Wish more actors had his grace.
I can't remember enjoying 40 minutes on UA-cam more than this; what a wonderful, gracious and modest man! Good questioning by the interviewer too. I guess it happens all round the world, but when my daughter was at Uni 15 years ago the kids she was with used to have Princess Bride parties; they'd dress up and re-enact the whole movie, word for word, they all knew the script off by heart! (I think I know most of it too, Princess Bride and Bladerunner are my two very favouritist movies)
He was in 2 classic fantasies if you count robin hood as fantasy. Men in tights was genius. The meta break where they all pull out their scripts was genius. May Mel brooks always be remembered as the genius he was.
2022 and this film is still one of my all-time favourites. It was so cool hearing the stories, especially about Andre the giant, RIP. Actually, I'm going to go and watch it again right now!!!
Music was good but it still baffles me how Knopler made it into the R&R HOF (at least how he got in before some of the actual great acts of the 70's and 80's like Styx or Pat Benatar)
@@ncurry1968 What are you talking about? Dire Straits were as big as Queen when the band retired. There songs are still iconic and Knopfler wrote them.
@@Chiungalla79 I want some of what you are smoking. Straits had one decent album and one VERY GOOD album. The other four (yes, only four more...only six albums in their catalogue) were garbage. As a band, they inspired virtually no one - of the thousands of musicians I know, not a single one of them points to DS as one of their inspirations. Not only that, they won a single Grammy for Money for Nothing...no other song of their's ever won anything (Sultans of Swing was the only other song of their's even nominated). Yeah, yeah, yeah, you'll come back with the fact that they "won" three other Grammy's - one was for best engineering on Brother in Arms...that's not really a band award now is it? Another was for best video for Money for Nothing...can't count that - it has nothing to do with the music and they already won for that song anyway so you can't count it twice. The last was for the "best surround sound album"...whatever the fuck that is (again, not really a band award). They haven't even played since '99...and there is zero demand for them to play again. I don't know why you brought up Queen but I assure you, DS was NEVER as big as Queen. Not even close. Queen put out 14 albums from '73 to '91 and one more after Freddy's death. 16 albums in 18 years...that's insane...DS can suck a dick if they think their 6 albums in 13 years is anywhere close to that. I'm not sure how they are counting albums but their wiki page says they have had 18 #1 albums...not sure how accurate that is...but safe to say, it's a great number more than DS ever dreamed of (they might have had two). Their performance at Live Aid is widely considered the greatest performance in rock history. Queen is on the Mount Rushmore of rock bands...Dire Straights might make a top 300 list. Might. That you would put DS up with Queen is absurd. But it just occurred to me that you already know how stupid that is and you're just trolling me. If that's the case...good one, you got me. P.S. I just showed my 19 year old this thread and he said, "Dire Straits as good as Queen? That's pure jackassery."
@@ncurry1968 You are using arbitrary standards that have nothing to do with my point and you know that. I never said they won the most prices. I never said they wrote the most albums. I never said they are considered as big as Queen in hindsight. But back then they generated comparable crowds and sales as Queen did. They were a household name and still are for people of 50+. Of cause Queens fame aged better. And of cause they put out more albums, which is pretty much easier if all band members write songs mind you. And yes, they won more prices. I`m a huge Queen fan myself. So yeah, by making arbitrary points you might have won the discussion you delusionally thought we were having. But for people that can and do read correctly you actually completely missed the point. And that makes you the jackass here. Btw. bringing your son into this is an appeal to the masses logical fallacy. Learn to think!
I remember seeing this movie for the first time . I loved it then, and still love it now! I can probably recite it word for word, I’ve watched it so many times over the years. My kids love it and now my grandkids watch it with me.
People asking why he sounds so American have to remember that he moved to the US in 1981 to study acting at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and has basically lived and worked in the US ever since. That's more then half of his life living in America, its bound to effect his accent.
2 things. 1st- its was an everything movie. Kids, action, drama, comedy. It had it all. 2nd- that sword fight is actually ranks amongst the top of all sword fight in cinema history.
When I showed Princess Bride to my daughter, I could see the bit of "what is this?" for the first ten minutes or so, then she was into it and laughing her head off. Such a great movie! I gotta say though that if I were casting the part of Vincent Price, I would cast Mr. Elwes. His soft spoken voice and erudite accent would make him perfect! That he has a face that could work too is all the better! Such a fun video!
I have 5 children and have just had the pleasure of introducing my two youngest children to my favourite movie, The Princess Bride, in a few years I will introduce it to my grandchildren...this is a classic, one of those rare movies where all the cast fit the roles perfectly and the set, story all come together beautifully to create a timeless peace. Thank you to all those who made this movie possible❤
The Sword fight is so memorable partly because of the musical cues and sound effects that make it so rhythmic. We all remember every move and every sword clank of that fight. It’s a dance and it works so brilliantly.
This video randomly dropped in my lap just as I was going to bed. One of my favourite films, hands down. Seeing Cary Elwes brings back the memories. He's aged really well. Such a uplifting, positive, heartfelt movie. To find someone who hasn't seen it is an excuse for a party. 😂
My girlfriend in college wanted to watch this movie with me (this was 1989) and I resisted because I thought it was a cheesy romance movie. She insisted and since then I've probably watched it 100 times. Truly a classic movie!
I picked this book to fill a Book with a Subtitle in the 52 Book Challenge 2023 but it's sitting in Book by a Comedian right now. This is the very first book I've ever listened to that kept my attention. The full 7 hours! I bought an Aux cord and plugged my phone into the car stereo system so my husband and I could both listen to it. I borrowed it through Libby and did the audio version. I'm SOOO glad I did! I think Cary's voice, his imitations, and the others that joined him just make it something that is worth having. We went to a book store and bought the book too. Thank you Cary! You did a great job!

showed this movie to a girl I started seeing recently. she had never seen it before, it's a classic favorite of mine, she absolutely loved it, the best part is, and she agreed, is that even though the movie is older than she is, it is not a dated movie!
The Google algorithm recommended this to me. Didn't know I was going to spend 39 minutes in this guy's company, but very happy I did. Those minutes passed really fast. Great interview! (I saw the movie 20-25 years ago. It is obviously time to see it again).
wow when he saids their instructor and swordsman was teachers from the Errol Flynn and Burt Lancaster films in the beginning then at end he saids they had to watch Sea Hawk and Robin Hood gave me goose bumbs. How awesome is that for pirate lovers and of the genre :) thanks :)! and love all the Princess Bride fans! Got to read that book :)
Back in ‘88 I watched this movie daily after work (just outta high school). Quoting the whole thing line for line front to back in months. To this day, as I’m at work, I run through the movie, line for line, word for word. There’s a lot of movies I love. Why is this one an obsession? The mix of American comedy with British dry sarcasm? Something is balanced, lovable and honest about this film. Thanks Cary for the book and this interview.
One of my fave books now (and my personal library is massive so that says a lot!) The show and the book never cease to make me smile or laugh out loud...
I did that swordfight scene as Westley, with my fellow actor Billy McDowell, for our stage combat and dialect exams combined, as college freshmen. Pure joy rehearsing and performing with accents, righthanded, lefthanded and all. Brings back such great memories. Glad to say we aced it!

I first saw Princess Bride 20 years after it was released. Cary was so handsome (Pretty really, but I always loved that look on a man.) This was such a great interview. Cary seems so down to earth and relatable. I just bought Princess Bride for my grandson's birthday. I know he is going to be so angry with me, that I bought him a "girl" movie. But, the movie has something for everyone, and it still has Cary for me.
The Princess Bride is my favorite movie of all time! Even my very macho late husband loved it (much to his surprise), as well as every person I've shown it to. It's one of those movies you can watch over and over and never get bored with...a true classic.
Our entire family--hubby, me, and 3 children--went to see this together as soon as it came out in our local theatre!!! We ALL loved it... cheering, laughing out loud, etc., etc.! When it came out on DVD, we bought it. Every once in awhile, I still pull it out to watch once again!!! Truly, one of the BEST EVER movies ever made and very family-friendly!! High recommended . . . STILL!!! Glad I came across this interview this morning...gonna pass it on to my kids! Thank YOU for sharing this with all of us!!!
I still have a crush on this guy. He is a good actor and even liked him in the Green River Killer movie. But Princess Bride, I'm absolutely in love with his character in it. I want to find someone just like him.
I love this interview so much. Cary is so poised and humble for a person of his talent and celebrity. The Princess Bride is my all time favorite film as it is for many people. As wonderful as all the actors were, the reason for me was Cary's role as Wesley. I've followed his career ever since. The book and hearing these anecdotes is a joy. It's an added layer to know the people making the film enjoyed it as much as you did watching it.
He used to hang around a bar I worked at nearly forty years ago, but I never took the opportunity to meet him, fool that I was, because he scared the hell out of me. This was long before "The Princess Bride", so his reputation then wasn't for being sweet, it was for being a wrestler, and he was just so HUGE. He terrified me just by sitting there and being mountainous. Years later, when I saw the movie, I regretted never having spoken to him, and I've regretted it ever since.
When WWF came to the arena I worked at I met him at the arcade. He wrestled with the kids that were there (mostly he just laid there and let the kids jump up and down on him). I was very small for my age (18yrs and only 4'4") so I joined the melee. He was so nice and patient, just lying there accepting every headlock that was put on him. I am sad that I never got to talk to him and know him as a person, but how many 18 year olds can say they wrestled the great Andre. I was saddened to find out later in my life that he was living with a lot of pain at the time. But he never showed even the smallest sign. He laughed and enjoyed everyone right up until someone took him to the arena back area to get ready for the show. Clearly one of the highlights of my life.

What a great interview. He seems like a thoroughly likeable guy. One of my favourite roles he played was “Pierre Despereaux” in the tv show “Psych”
Yesss! Right? I was waiting for that to be mentioned, but it wasn't, which makes me wonder if I am an even bigger nerd than the workers at Google!...?
One of my favorites as well!
I absolutely loved him in psych. Actually, I don't think there is anything that he's been in that I didn't like. Robin Hood was hilarious.
I'm not sure it had been done at that time. Wasn't that Psych episode around 2015 or so and this was 2014?
@@TracyCarolan He played the role in 4 episodes of Psych in seasons 4, 5, 6, and 8 from 2009 to 2014.
I fell in love with this movie when it first came out when I was 21 yrs old and years later, I introduced my two boys to it and they still quote it to this day. We watch it from time to time and it gets better every time we watch it. Such a classic!! Thank you all for the great memories and laughter.
Same here I watched it as a young girl. Now me and my boys watch it and they love it. 💛💚💙
My boys liked it too. And still do! ❤️✌️
"Had me at" the original trailer for the film, which was hilarious. Become a family favorite? Absolutely!!!
This is quite possibly the best interview I've ever watched, completely engaging start to finish. I'm blown away by this interviewer's ability to match Cary's energy and delivery in a way that supports and enhances the whole situation while not once stealing the focus. Brilliant, indeed!
I’m guessing he would never have let on.
He actually seemed to be more in admiration of it… the volume, tonal quality, and duration.
@@notfiveo no he embodied the situation as a apposed speaking be embarrassed by it
I showed this to my kids. He was my first crush. We all loved it. I saw it when it first came out ☺️.
Cary did SUCH a great job in the role of Westley, I could never imagine ANYONE else in that role.
Totally
Then don't watch the "Home Movie" version. He does an excellent Prince/King too in nothing but his own clothing
Or anyone else playing the other roles either! Especially Buttercup or Mad Max...
Heck the casting of every character was a bullseye everyone fit their role like a glove.

Princess Bride is a classic... And the reason is that each actor was so well cast. Inconcievable!
However Humperdinck is completely different in the book.
That's inconTHEEvable😆

Love This Story Thank You For Sharing
That's sweet!💜
Irony being that my husband and I did that with Forrest Gump for over 3 years at one point because of my chronic Vertigo so that film also has a MAJOR home in the heart of our marriage.
That Robin Wright is just MADE to watch act on a loop I guess.😊
Every time my husband and I are watching a movie or tv show where someone falls downhill, one of us will say, “Aaaaas youuuu wiiiiiiiish!” Cannot help it.
This is BRILLIANT!! my adoration for Cary just grew in leaps and bounds... he is fantastic!
There's a shortage of perfect movies in this world. The Princess Bride is one of them. It's as fresh to me today as it was all those years ago.
My favorite related story with a tribute to The Princess Bride is when my work’s assistant had to justify a full size car to accommodate my 6’5” height. Her four word justification was “driver of unusual size.”
🤣🤣 That is inconceivably awesome!!
D.O.U.S's... I don't think they exist.
He is top 10-15 comedians for me. I grew up on his films, my favorite being Men in Tights. I can watch that for days. Love Cary Elwes.
Matt Trimm men in tights very funny lol
Tracey Austin manly tights, we’re butch
Was so excited for him to be in stranger things. He always does such a good job in his roles.
Matt Trimm unlike other Robin Hoods he can speak with a British accent 😂
Princess Bride was one of the greatest films a kid could possibly grow up with. Along with other classics like The Goonies, or Labyrinth, or The Dark Crystal, or the Neverending Story. The 80s and 90s were a cultural treasure trove compared to the nonsense kids have to contend with today. I was so very lucky to have been born when I was. What a time to be a kid.
Don't just reminisce, continue the tradition. My kids have seen every one of them and continue to re-watch them every now and then. I will not deprive them of such magic.
And they had real music! Made by humans!
You bet. I'm now sharing these with my granddaughter. She loves them!!!! We were so lucky
@@pinkyhotmessx69 It is unfortunate, the downside of Napster-- ended up being the end of physical medium. It's awesome that we can stream, yet it is not good that we no longer have physical possession of our beloved songs and movies. That needs to change.
@Herb Superb I would add Willow to that awesome list.
One of the greatest movies ever. I've watched it with my daughter 50 times easy, it never gets stale. Great book, too.
mY soon to be gran kids will watch this on vhs
Captain Bob Smiley He was good in "Glory" with Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman & Denzel Washington.
Cary is an amazing man! I was heartbroken when he suffered a medical emergency and was hospitalized earlier this year. I loved this interview and immediately purchased his book for my Kindle! The Princess Bride came out when I was a Junior in HS and I stopped counting at 47 times I've seen it... it's "inconceivable" now how many times I've seen it! God bless you, Cary and all the cast. Rest in Peace to all those we've lost....Andre to name one. 🙏💜
“I don’t think that word means what you think it means.” ;)
Did you listen to the audiobook? Much better than reading the book.
Best "Handsome Prince Charming" EVER EVER EVER! Love his half Brit, half American accent!
Abigail McKern >> Like Cary Grant. It’s a called a “Mid-Atlantic” accent, I think.
@@jaybee9269 Correct!
"The Mid-Atlantic accent, or Transatlantic accent, is a cultivated accent of English blending together features of both American and British English that were considered the most prestigious by the early 20th-century American upper class and entertainment industry." Wikipedia
The book is terrific. My husband and I saw it at the movies and when it was over no one in the theater moved we all sat there we didn’t want it to be over. We absolutely loved it.
He should have been a massive star, and its a crime that he isn't. Mel Brooks said it was all due to poor management.
Taking that part in Mel Brooks piece of shit movie didn't help him much. Men in Tights was so bad - it remains the only movie I've ever walked out on.
Frank Kovacs Other than "Lady Jane Grey", "Glory" & "Sawz","Robin Hood Men in Tights"...I can't think of another film of his besides "Princess Bride"
How can you forget his AMAZING performance as the lead in "Crush", opposite a young Alicia Silverstone?! Then there are bit parts like what he did in "Twister," but any real fan of his MUST see crush.
@@Chief2Moon Saw.
@@ncurry1968 That movie was amazing. I'm so sorry you hated it. Cary was amazing and his facial expressions are great! I have that movie memorized from start to finish.
Its amazing Cary Elwes loves and cherishes this movie as much as we do. That's doesn't usually happen.
Cary Elwes hasn't received the recognition he deserves. Superb actor, with an engaging and humble persona as well.
Loved him as Robin Hood!
We wore out our first video tape of The Princess Bride...ran thru a DVD...now on a Blu-ray version. One of our all-time favorites, and always will be. Great interview.
We love the movie and so do all of our grandchildren. It is lovely to have something that we can share with our whole family.
In the late 80's, my men's group pastor at my church, showed it for us, and said that the care with which you "treated" buttercup was a genuinely romantic gesture, and we should pay attention to our wives with such care. It's been a favorite ever since.
Not a bad idea.
Well that was just one of the most enjoyable interviews I've ever watched!
He was in 2 classic fantasies if you count robin hood as fantasy. Men in tights was genius. The meta break where they all pull out their scripts was genius. May Mel brooks always be remembered as the genius he was.
He's still around though
Is, Man is!
2022 and this film is still one of my all-time favourites. It was so cool hearing the stories, especially about Andre the giant, RIP. Actually, I'm going to go and watch it again right now!!!
They need to re-release this for the theater again.
"mostly dead"....Never was, never will be.
My all time favorite movie
The sweetest love story ever told.
The music by Mark Knopfler was one of the things that set this far above most films.
To me the movie itself is a homage to both Mark Knopfler and for Dire Straits.
Music was good but it still baffles me how Knopler made it into the R&R HOF (at least how he got in before some of the actual great acts of the 70's and 80's like Styx or Pat Benatar)
@@ncurry1968
What are you talking about?
@@ncurry1968
You are using arbitrary standards that have nothing to do with my point and you know that.
If you listen closely, you can still bits and pieces of his British accent.
Actually, he pronounces American names American and things about himself in kind of a mid-Atlantic mush.
He doesn't sound American at all. Obvious British accent.
@@basedbear1605 Nope, this British person hears mainly American vowels but his speech pattern is still probably British.
@@polyphiloprogenitive4614 You don't hear a British accent because YOU are British. No more than I hear American accents by Americans. Common sense.

lspr215 I bought the Princess Bride for my granddaughter and told her it had the best sword fight scenes. After we watched it, she fully agreed.
Kathi Sander No question, the Princess Bride swordfight even eclipses Errol Flynn's swordfights...that takes some doing.

It should. They were trained by an Olympic fencing champion.

To paraphrase Julius Caesar, I came, I saw, I concurred. 😎

Cary is a fine actor, but PRINCESS BRIDE is his best work and one of the greatest movies in history.
I dunno i really enjoyed him in robin hood: men in tights. But then again i love mel brooks films
His voice so is interesting, so calm with a slight accent. I wasn’t expecting it to be that way.
It reminds me of Stefan Molyneux's.

My girlfriend in college wanted to watch this movie with me (this was 1989) and I resisted because I thought it was a cheesy romance movie. She insisted and since then I've probably watched it 100 times. Truly a classic movie!

Brilliant and very touching recollection of a milestone movie, forged by a wonderful cast and crew.
One of my fave books now (and my personal library is massive so that says a lot!) The show and the book never cease to make me smile or laugh out loud...
The "As You Wish" documentary is excellent too, also on UA-cam.
I did that swordfight scene as Westley, with my fellow actor Billy McDowell, for our stage combat and dialect exams combined, as college freshmen.

I first saw Princess Bride 20 years after it was released. Cary was so handsome (Pretty really, but I always loved that look on a man.) This was such a great interview.
LOVED THIS MOVIE! I still have my VHS copy and watch it at least twice a year.
As someone who has met Andre the Giant, I have a real connection to this movie. It is one of my all time favorites.
@@susieusmaximus5330 I met him (lucky me), nicest, funniest guy one could ever enjoy being with, just like in the movie!
UR SO SPECIAL
He has barely aged...amazing. Lovely person.
