Slicing up a fresh order of 25 lbs Electric Blue Labradorite. I'm still in awe at the colours in this material, I can see why it's called Electric Blue!
It's a continuous-rim diamond saw, you'd have to work pretty hard for it to cut you. It will go through your fingernails pretty quick though. I have a similar saw and I've never cut myself with it.
I have about 12 lbs of labradorite rough hanging out on my kitchen counter, and I’ve been afraid to cut it. Thanks for showing how to cut it in a way that will best show off the labradorescence.

Excellent stuff! I saw a bucket of rough Madagascar labradorite for sale last year and was not impressed. I bought some poor quality sodalite instead. Now, I am kicking myself. I guess I should have wet it. Live and learn. Thanks for a great video.
You should've grabbed it! Well depends how much they were asking, there are a bunch of price ranges/quality on the market for Madagascar material. Got lucky with the Purple, not much rough out there like that.
$100 for about a gallon is a steal if from Madagascar and good quality. I have a few regrets about not getting some deals as well... passed up a top grade Boulder Opal chunk I still think about. Picked up about 2 lbs of rough Mexican Fire and Brazilian Crystal though so it was a good day haha.
Rough Market Can I ask who do use as a supplier for your material (rocks). I'm kinda new at lapidary, been doing it as a hobby for about two years. I get my labradorite and most of my other rough from eBay. I usually pay between $6 & $8 per pound for labradorite rough from Madagascar. I tend to get descent material, but it's so hard to tell by only looking at pictures on line. I've been lucky enough to only have received one seven pound chunk that wasn't great....but I currently have 15 pounds in the mail, I guess I'll see in a couple days, lol. I've looked online for other reputable dealers at fair prices, but haven't come across anything worthwhile as of yet. I live in Iowa, so any rock/mineral shows don't happen anywhere close to me. Anyway, great looking slabs! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. This was the first video I've seen on here explaining the angle to cut labradorite. And believe me, I've been looking for information. Any tips of the trade are always greatly appreciated.

i've found samples of similar quality not too far from Ottawa.Also in a wide range of base colours from the dark spectralite black, labradorite gray, green, pink, and translucent white to clear. Also what appears to be a microcrystalline form thats's unknown to me (looks similar to sunstone but not really) all exhibiting strong labradoresence across the full spectrum of colour flash, although not that beautiful purple in that large of a section, that's absolutely gorgeous! love your work! If you are interested I may be willing to give up the location (privately lol)
edit: also various other minerals of value, some extremely high quality seraphinite (chlorite) in a rainbow of colours and presumed nephrite? and cat's eye 'jade' to which i attempted to get authenticated but was met with greed and disdain to my unwillingness to give up the exact location. Ive extracted literal tons of material so i have more than I'll ever need.

I wasn't aware that Ontario had anything close to Labradorite other then Peristerite, and from what I understand that only comes in blue. I fired off an email a couple weeks ago but it likely ended up in your spam folder. I posted a few videos of the minerals I've found, the feldspars I show were a random grab sample (took about 15 minutes to collect) to give you an idea of the potential of this location. The presumed jade, cat's eye 'jade' and seraphinite were samples i already had. The samples I show are a small fraction of what I have laying around here but accurately depict the general quality.

Ya I like to hand cut small pieces like this, I sometimes use a small guide but this is more of a trim saw. I do make wedges... just not on camera haha!

The black lines are Mica in these. There are some fractures but they don't have any colour so planning the cut can be tricky sometimes. Thanks for watching!
I'm currently processing alot of surfaced glacial till from the Adirondacks, but on the Canadian side... What is the host rock that you find this in? I have a specific piece, that is a massive combination of different quartz colors, it I'm finding this dark blue/grey smokey quartz, but I think I've found a couple of faces of Labradorite, mixed in, but am curious as to your host.
i no this video is 4 years old and the market is kinda weird right now but i would love to know if you have any contacts for large chunks (or bigger) like you have in this video. all my local stores are having a hard time finding any.
I never heard that rule myself, but I never cut with oil only water. Lots of minerals are porous and de-oiling is a pain that I don't want to take on. Water works well for what I cut, and for most Opal I cut dry which can be tricky not to overheat. Thanks for the comment, hope that helps.
Here is another one. In order to determine the best color plane in "L" is to look for some surface evidence and then grind it a bit, with a 220g wheel to see if there is more? Any thoughts about how to find the best color plane angles?
Finding the colour plane can be tricky as there are a few factors.. light, angle, and direction. For light try to use the sun if you can then roll the piece around until you find the flash. Then you'll have to find the direction as it can change. Now re-check the material vertical (if for jewellery) then see if you can still see it, that will be your plain. Mark that direction and try to stay true to that when cutting. Now in my case there were sometimes 3-4 directions in the material so you have to cut getting the best yield. You can always trim it up further afterwards. You shouldn't have to grind it down to see the flash, just get it wet. Hope that helps.
At just after the 0:50 mark there is a pink-ish sheen in the stone. What is that exactly? I am trying to figure out what kind of stone I got yesterday. The other sides are all gray but one side has a beautiful pink/orange/red sheen like the one at the 0:50 mark.
Not odd at all when you have to trim odd shaped material and need certain sections removed. It's a trim saw primarily and not for slabbing, a bit awkward for that I will say. I hope to find the time to make a saw without a table entirely for easier trimming.

Labradorite is one of my most favorite. I love the way it puts on a light show.. even the part without the flash. Has some really nice silver flash..

Labadorite is one of my favorite stones! I hadn't considered capturing the "flash" when slabbing.

We buy direct from Madagascar. I wish there was a mine in Canada that had the rich purple colour.
Im suprised you dont build a wooden guide box simular to what us wood workers build for table saws.
I did experiment with that. I'm building a big custom saw so I just use this as a trim saw now.
