    The Neumann mics are considered some of the top tier mics you can get... so why was I disappointed by them?
    I didn't have much time, but here's my brief Neumann U87 Ai and Neumann TLM-103 review and comparisons to the LEWITT PURE Tube and LEWITT LCT-1040. Enjoy the vibes.

    I know there are plosives. I tried to clean them up a bit. This both serves as the obligatory plosive test, and me being in a SUPER rush and USUALLY doing a better job at avoiding them ^^;

      The plosives with the TLM 103 is my biggest issue with them. I use both the AKG C414 XLS and Neumann TLM 103. The TLM 103 is so easy to accidentally pop and capture those plosives. Yet the C414 does a great job of handling them.

    I use a TLM103 for professional voice over and when I need to deliver RAW audio to a studio I am always stunned at how close to "ready" the audio sounds.
    I use it for 99% of my voice overs these days (the MKH416 is my other microphone) and it's been used in a number of commercials, corporate work, audio guides and a bunch of other stuff and it's sound is so versatile. It works well everywhere.
    it also helps that every studio I've worked with knows the name "Neumann". There might be technically "clearer" or "more natural" microphones, but the name does carry weight to it.

    The TLM 107 and TLM193 sit a bit in between the u87ai and the TLM103.
    Neumann has so many legendary mics that they overshadow the mics that are probably more appropriate for certain sound sources.

    U-87 was the easiest to pay attention to, sounds closer to person talking to me IRL. Not suprised that it would be popular for voiceover/audiobooks

    Used to have a TLM 103 now rockin’ the U87. I love it and it pairs well with my Universal Audio interface with a touch of the Neve plugin on the pre. Either way they were pretty ahead of the crowd in getting “AI” into their product name. Am I right?

    What you want is the Neumann KMS105 it is a handheld condenser mic not a traditional bottle shape but the KKMS105 is a perfect combination of the TLM and the 87.

    I generally really enjoy your videos but this one is driving me nuts (as a professional audio engineer). Anyone who watches - the sensitivity on these microphones is such that you should use a pop screen 99% of the time. Another really useful technique is speaking "past" the capsule/headbasket at a 30 or 45 degree angle which will help with plosive but may also have a more pleasing tone on certain vocals/voiceovers because it slightly changes the frequency response of the the capsule. Finally I must add that in the last 5 years there have been 50 or so clones of the Neumann U87 in general that are just as reliable and sound as good if not better. One of them being the Roswell Microphones Colares (or even the Mic-Parts S87, my personal voiceover mic). Neumann is still the standard however and probably will be for decades to come.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  6 місяців тому +3

      Yeah I mean, 75% of potential plosives I got past the capsule, but I let a few slip. Consequence of being rushed to get the video done and the setup for this not allowing the right angle. Lesson learned but there’s only a few plosives in here

    If your goal is accuracy in vocal reproduction and precision (one of these mics is exactly like the other - no need for matched pairs), then the U87ai/TLM103 are the professional standard. However, I prefer my voice with the warm coloration and presence of an SM7B. It all depends on your goals 🙂

      damn right. I would never use my Neumann for VO work. Thats a waste. It has a much better dynamic range than speaking is going to take advantage of the incredible silky smooth sound i get from harmonies on it destroyed everything else i have ever used

  • @kevinw0lf
    @kevinw0lf 6 місяців тому +1

    The thing is that both of those mics aren't really made for spoken word. They CAN be used for that, but that doesn't mean you should. For example, the TLM103 is great if you keep your distance from it and it's super suited for higher pitched vocals. It's a great singing mic that simply delivers clean sound and cut through a mix better, especially for EDM and pop. The U87 is that mic that's had been sticking around singers simply because it has that full sound that doesn't detract from it's ability to pick up every nuance.
    Both are far more suited to singing than they are for spoken word and podcast usage. Neumann knows what they're doing and that's why they have sooooo many models available.

    • @LeSaff
      @LeSaff 6 місяців тому

      Thank you! I think so too, but since I've never had a chance to try them out, I'll keep quiet lol
      But spoken words never go as low or as high as when you're singing!
      You need a microphone with a clear sound and as flat as possible.
      But on the other hand, I perfectly understand that people want to please themselves, and I'm not criticizing them.

    As a pro audio engineer, I agree with your overall review. I would add that the point of these microphones (the u87 especially) is designed so that the particular “aesthetic” is achieved by the preamp you pair it with. The microphone itself is meant to feel flat and transparent and the preamp driving it determines the character that colours the audio in a desirable way.

    I hate the TLM103. Ive used the 87a (pre ai) 89, D01 and have owned the 102 (chose a pair of these cheaper mics over a pair of 103s as they aren't as harsh) a vintage U47fet and purple badge TLM170.. (Now THAT is a clean mic)... I record, edit, mix Voice Overs into TV/Radio promos daily.. The VO artists who use the 103 I have to eq the crap out of.. in house we use the digital Neumann D01's which are clean and clear.. all the headroom in the world but cost over $10,000 (we have them in 7 of our booths) and have been discontinued so eventually the software wont be able to be run anymore.
    The 103 seems to have gotten this weird kick as the go to, when one can't afford an 87, in bedroom studios.. but for that price there are WAY better options... Or just save up for an 87, 89 or TLM170 id you want that Neumann badge (or more and get a 67, 47fet or newly reissued M49)

      by artists, do you mean singers and/or musicians ?
      These mics are incredibly good, no doubts.
      But with the explosion of streamers, content creators and even voice over, there is a lot of new mics, much more cheaper who do the job perfectly well.
      And to me, like it has been mentioned in other comments, these mics are not intended for voice over.

    It’s funny i really dislike both of these mics because of the hyped high end. The TLM103 has way too much sibilance. The U87 is great for some voices especially in pop, but personally I LOVE them as room mics on drums and other sources. The U67 and U47 are where Neumann shines. These days both of these mics price points have way more competition and as you said the lewitt mics are a better deal.

  • @opius1199

    The TLM-103 is in a class of its own in the comparison test... The way it pics up the smallest intonation in your voice was exceptional. It is as I could feel your mood whilst you read out the text.
    Your "imperfections" was much more on display there than with any of the other mics. Would not use it as a podcast/video mic though...
