- In this video, My grandma "Popo" shows us how to make my childhood favorite, Preserved Mustard Greens & Steamed Pork (I know there are many variations, this is how I grew up eating it)
This video was filmed back in early 2020 during the height of lockdown. Apologies for the shaky camera. I'll be releasing some great content from 2020 through the next couple of weeks.
HOMESTYLE CHINESE FOOD.
Ingredients
One Bunch of Preserved Mustard Greens
Pork Shoulder or Pork Butt (about 1/4 pound) or as much or a little as you want.
Pork Marinade
1 Tbsp Light Soy Sauce
1 Tbsp Dark Soy Sauce
1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
1/2 Tsp White Pepper
1/2 Tsp Sugar
2-3 Tbsp Oil
1 Clove of Garlic
Procedure:
Cut your pork into strips or however you like it and add the seasonings to the meat and set aside to marinate for 1 hour. In the meantime take your Preserved Mustard Greens and pull them off the stems, then in a large bowl rinse them several times and then soak them in a bowl with warm water for 20 min. Then rinse a couple times to remove the sand and some of the salty taste. Finally cut them into small pieces. After the pork has marinaded add the Preserved Mustard Greens and mix. Place the mixture on a heatproof bowl or heatproof plate to steam. Steam for 40 min on medium high heat. After 20 min check your steaming bowl to see if there is enough water. If most of the water evaporated, add some more.
ENJOY!

i miss food like this...
Wishing you and your family well!
Respect to your Gradma. Thanks for sharing her recipe.
Your comment made me happy. Thank you for appreciating what it is. Wish you well!
One of my favs as well. Remember growing up going through 3-4 bowls of rice when my mom made it. In my 60’s now, just thinking about it puts a smile on my face. Cherish your time with your Grandma.
Wow what profound memories. Sending love and happiness to you and your family.
I haven't eaten this dish in over 24 or 25 years. I need to make this for dinner soon. This video makes me miss my mom so much. Thank you both!
My new favourite youtube chef.
Yes she’s the master! Happy holidays
I don’t make this dish but I remember it.
It's a lot of work to prepare for such a tasty humble dish.
One of my favorite dishes! I mix a little corn starch and water into the meat. After steaming sometimes I do add a bit of sesame oil on the top. Your version looks good por por. 👍 Michael, your Cantonese is 👍.
That sounds right, I think Popo forgot to add cornstarch! lol Thank you be well!
Love to see you spend time and bond with your po po ❤

This was my favorite home cooked meal growing up!
Me too :)
This looks so good. I haven't had much choice in a really long time.
Hi Michael, thanks to your videos for bringing back the memories from the past. The food that we have now is either too greasy or too high calories,
Yeah that's true, the real homestyle food really preserves everything and its not over excess.
Po Po is so adorable! I Love mui Choi with pork, Mum used pork belly or when there is Chinese roast pork left over. Never waste food Mum's motto.
Turn the little that we have into treasure and preserve it
This is one of my favorite dishes growing up. My parents makes this a few times a year.
Yes I'm glad this resonates with you! Have a great weekend!
Ahhh, nice! I so look forward to you posting these videos with Grandma....the dynamic duo! I love how you interact with Po Po in Cantonese. That's awesome. Your vocabulary is not bad Michael....keep it up. Sending love and good vibes from California!

These are wonderful videos. I wish I had been able to do this sort of thing with my popo.
Thank you Judy! Sending you positivity and good vibes. I did not value the time that I had with Popo when I was younger or Chinese culture. I'm happy I have the opportunity now and I can share who I am :). Wish you well

@@MichaelNicastro what are y'all doin for thanksgiving??
My grandma also came from guangdong. I call her popo
Aww popo still looking healthy 👍
We as Hakka people called it nyuk piang😊
We all eat the same things :)
had this dish last week.
The best!
Moy choy are not supposed to be a Hakka dish for Mei Zhou Guangdong !?
OOo really ok. Happy New Year!
can she do one with the persevered cabbage? my grandmother used to do that one but she passed, we never got the recipe down
I'm sorry to hear that. Have you seen "Made with Lau" youtube videos they may have something like that. Wish you and your family well - Michael
@@MichaelNicastro no,I think he only does things that most Americans have eaten. The one your grandmother made is something my late grandma made too, but I like the other version with darker and harder cabbage. Idk the name because I don’t speak Chinese.
@@roblox21242 Hey my friend. Are you maybe referring to "chinese pickled mustard greens" it's darker green in color and pickled? I don't know if made with lau has your dish, but I have personally learned a lot from their videos. They are very informative as someone who also does not speak Chinese well and does not really understand the culture.
I have stopped filming cooking videos with my grandma and spend more time with her in the real world rather than film videos.
I wish you well! Hope you find the dish you are looking for. Your Grandmother lives on!
Michael
@@MichaelNicastro hi there, thank you for the kind words. I used to live with my grandmother, she would dry the veggies and it’s cabbage. There is the “moy choy” and “zhee choy” I think sorry I don’t speak Chinese but my grandmother made those two dishes.
I hope you and your grandmother well. Spend a lot of time with her 👍
This dish is good, but it's a pain making sure you get all the grit out. The stuff that comes in a bag is salty as heck also if you don't rinse it good enough. I use ground pork in mine.
Your grandma says cool? Man she's cool .
Haha yeah you said it right. She is cool, I'm very grateful. Happy New Year and wish you and your family well!
More Cantonese mu koy
Can you post a shrimp and egg recipe?
Shrimp and egg recipe? Like together or separate?
I take it you guys don’t bake 🤣🤣🤣🤣 that oven is used as pots and pan storage
Yes not at all!
Most Chinese homes are like this..we use our ovens for pots and pans and dishwashers as a drying rack after we wash our dishes by hand. Lol
@@cdclinic Haha that makes sense then :)
Where did PoPo buy that salted mustard green? I dont like using the mustard green from China they most likely use polluted water to grow their vegetables......
