  • Update: 1 Year on • Aerial Flight over Can...
    I had been meaning to fly over and film what remains on the once vast Cane Hill Mental Asylum in Coulsdon on the outskirts of London for some time and finally got round to do it in early May 2015.
    The hospital, originally built in 1882 closed in 1991 and has since decayed awaiting decisions on how the land would be re-purposed.
    All that remains is the Chapel, Administration Building and Water Tower, redevelopment of the site to include 650 new homes is scheduled to start later in 2015.
    Music: Hey Now, London Grammar
    Filmed using a DJI Phantom 2 with GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition and editing using Adobe Premier Elements 12

    Used to work there - started May 81 as a pupil nurse, it was an interesting 2 years to say the least.
    Left after 2 years training, good memories.

    I spent over a year in Cane Hill as an inmate and though it was overcrowded it was an incredible building. I think it is a crime that it was neglected, vandalised, set on fire and demolished. I have fond memories of some of the patients there. The mentally ill were sold out when care in the community failed to materialise and day resources were shut down. This is poignant film.

    Amazing, I lived in the valley and my Dad worked there. I could see the water tower from my house. Glad a little bit of it remains to remind us of the community it supported.

    Thanks for this stunning video. The music is well suited. A very calming and peaceful setting with Chipstead behind it and Farthing Downs to the side. I would love to see what it's like now with the new development if you're able to shoot something similar?

    ***** the buildings in the video are all that remain. They are protected (I assume) so will be retained and restored during the re-development

    Wow, Just wow. I explored so much of this place in my teens. It quite emotional to see it all gone like this. I can't believe the state of the main front building. It was complete but stripped when I last saw it. Thieves totally ruined this place. So sad.

      gunman261 the next phase is currently going through planning another 600 or so homes to be added the chapel water tower and admin building are remaining though as they are protected.

      yep right but are they going to refurbish them?

    • @8dcphoto
      @8dcphoto  7 років тому +1

      Yes I think so, probably similar to what they did at Nethern on the Hill. The Chapel there is now part on the on-site health club and the water tower was turned into a couple of flats I think
