I have schizophrenia, the condition and treatment of people with my condition is very poor. This movement impacts treatment of schizophrenia as RFK associates with MAHA adjacent psychologists who view schizophrenia as a metabolic issue that can be alleviated if we just follow certain diets. Diet cures for my condition are a historical failure. The current diet pushed is the keto diet which states that ketosis will extinguish or lessen schizophrenia. Many with my condition have gone off their medication to follow this path. This is dangerous for them and may cause serious harm. There is no repeatable and clinically validated data for this diet but it is pushed hard in conjunction with this movement. Thanks for reading.
Not to mention staying in prolonged ketosis is dangerous for the body. Most if any of the benefits are seen during the refeeding periods after coming out of ketosis those metabolic processes are where the healthy aspect lie, it’s only safe to be in for about three days. It can cause Oregon failure and seizures(ironically). It stopped being studied as a treatment for epilepsy only after several children died.
The problem is, most people who disagree with RFK’s dangerous beliefs regarding the disabled and neurodivergent agree with him that disabled and neurodivergent people are less than human. Their complicity has brought us to this point.

I’ve worked in health insurance for the better part of 20 years. In fact, the only reason I got into it was I was aging off my parents’ plan, my employer scheduled me to work 37.5 hours a week so they didn’t have to offer me insurance, and I have a pre-existing condition. I needed insurance, so I thought, why not just work for them? So in all this time, I could probably write a novel from how messed up the whole healthcare system is (not just insurance) from top to bottom. And a lot needs changing, and that is definitely not to let insurance off the hook, but no one, and certainly not this incoming administration, is proposing what needs to be done because, capitalism. Yeah, Big Pharma is messed up, but nothing RFK Jr is proposing will solve the kitchen table problem of cost. There need to be caps on cost, especially orphan drugs which are predatorily priced at millions of dollars a year, especially when they get government grants and often, at least in later stages, people either volunteer or pay to be part of drug trials. Research and development is a small fraction of the cost of these drugs. It’s the ads and kickbacks to crooked doctors that make up the bulk of their expenses. Then, even when generics come out (and that doesn’t include some of the biggest drivers of cost, biologics, which don’t technically have a generic as US law defines it) they play around with it, drop manufacturing the generic when a new, shiny (not better) drug comes out. They mess around with dosing to prolong the process to producing the generic. If you can buy this stuff in Canada at a fraction of the cost, there’s just no reason you can’t cap it here, other than many politicians, on both sides, being on the receiving end of Big Pharma lobbying money, and having vested interests in these companies. RFK Jr and Dr. Oz hawking supplements over drugs that actually work is not really sticking it to Big Pharma, at least not in anyway to make a difference in the cost to the consumer.

One of the reasons why things have turned out the way they have is some people (including some people in medicine, biology, and chemistry and anti-"scam" types) have handled alternative medicine so atrociously, and people have listened to them too much. Instead of nitpicking what people SAY, they should have focused on what people MEAN and helped them verbalize their thoughts better, not just invalidate them, tell them they're wrong, or soapboxed their biases as the truth. And they gave alternative medicine too much negative publicity while letting conventional medicine off the hook and threw the baby out with the bathwater when it came to what's correct and what's not.

Leeches would probably be better than what the public health agencies usually promote. The reality is that RFK Jr is not a quack, he is a bit eccentric but he is actually a patriot and rightfully is concerned about American health outcomes. You guys are some of the fattest, most depressed people in the world, and have some of the highest rates of chronic disease. Clearly what you've been doing is not working (or is the entire point of your system to keep you all sick and lifelong patients). Why not try listening to someone who has spent their career fighting companies over environmental waste and pollution, and fighting the regulatory agencies who are completely corrupted.
I know this would be a massive undertaking but I would love to see a video digging into differing models of insurance and healthcare. Hearing a person from a country with socialized medicine lament quality is something I am immediately frustrated, and frankly angered, by. Americans have to climb mountains to even have health insurance. My 1 yr old baby was put on a $1,200 monthly (!) spend down and it took multiple months to correct this error. I had to delay his pediatrician appointments, his vaccinations, his lead test bc the doctor won’t see the baby if they are uninsured. I am still making frequent calls to have the $800 of bills covered. A close friend and her partner are unable/unwilling to have intercourse bc she no longer has insurance through work and her new job won’t establish insurance for 90 days.
That's understandable, but what she meant is that 20 years ago our health care system was better that what it is today, even if for Americans it would be a dream compared to what they have to endure. Because in Europe where most countries have a good healthcare system, the private companies, hedge funds and greedy industries try to privatise it, little by little. It's a never ending fight.

Despite being very critical of western medicine, healthcare skeptics are immediately sus to me. Like, I got a problem with the methodologies and practices, especially in regards to often not treating root causes and general disregard for people's quality of life, but setting bones and casting freaking work as do vaccinations. The medical establishment is bad because it's profit driven, not cause they are outright lying to and harming people.
i think there are some fantastic and informative points in this video regarding the MAHA phenomenon, as an American I do feel the inclination to push back on the implicit framing that the pre-neoliberal democratic party made bold campaigns, its true that the party at that point received a large amount of funding from labor unions which lost their power with the neoliberal era and resulted in clinton turning the party into a more corporatist l'extrême centre liberal party, but the efforts of medicaid and medicare were ultimately bandaid solutions in their own right which did not make any bold choices like nationalization of healthcare itself or anything like that, in comparison it seems more significant, but we should't let that make these postwar policies towards health seem radical or anything
It's a common misconception that every piece of legislation was its' own end goal. It's not that JFK or LBJ didn't want something like an American NHS, it's that with the pushback at the time they had to bargain down to healthcare for seniors only with a poverty program. The hope at the time was to expand from there, but then Nixon, Reagan and the neoliberal era happened.

It's likely that outcomes will not simply be "underwhelming" as Alice describes here, but actively and drastically harmful, especially for folks with chronic conditions.

I respect their crew because they were very laud proponents against privitizing water springs. This is a very serious issue. There are countries around the world who failed to protect their natural water resources from privatization and now have very expensive and limited drinkable water supply.

I get my news through video essays rather than directly even though I'm in america. It just softens the shocks sometimes. This is kind of filling me in on some things I didn't realize. I personally am a disabled American who's not old enough to retire but cannot work anymore so I'm on Medicaid which comes with my social security disability income. Unfortunately they don't talk about health outcomes for people like me who are no longer able to work but still young. Right now it feels like they want us all dead. The truth is if I had access to more than Medicaid will pay for I might have some improvements in my health that would return me to the productive workforce. In other words I might not be considered disabled if I had access to certain medications and therapies that Medicaid will not cover But I'm not worth it to them I guess.
Another irony is that Medicaid paid for my official neuropsychology autism diagnosis. So all those people who told me my self-diagnosis wasn't real can suck it I went and got a real diagnosis. However that diagnosis means nothing if RFK thinks adult autism doesn't exist.
Anecdotally, I know multiple people in my social circle who said they like RFK jr because he "is the only the candidate talking about the environment" or "he wants to get the unhealthy chemicals out of our food." It's worrisome how a public figure who pushes all kinds of harmful misinformation has become the face of healthcare policy in America.

I like that you mentioned the rebranding of Republicans interest in public health started with the covid pandemic, however, it it more than a coincidence that an aesthetic-based focus on health emerged from MAHA at this time. The pandemic has disabled millions and continues to do so as mitigations are a thing of the past. When a mass disabling event happens, society becomes more hostile to the disabled, more ableist and comfortable with eugenics (think of people saying "only the vulnerable are at risk"). The democrats have left these people behind by declaring the pandemic "over" despite it clearly not being so. And complete misinformation about disability and chronic illness, which the mainstream media is complicit in, people fall for snake oil salesmen and fascist-lite public health campaigns. I think this video makes two mistakes (not counting the questionable choices with the audio): 1. It fails to fully account for the political dynamics that have resulted in Democrats being afraid of their own shadows. Republicans have achieved such great success with their scorched earth policies that Democrats don't want to stick their neck out about anything. Obamacare was so wrenching for Democrats they don't want to go through anything like that again. And they don't have to. The professional Democrats continue to advance in their careers using the funds from the billionaires who own them, so they don't have a need to do anything positive. 2. MAHA is extremely trivial and has been no more substantive for the Trump campaign than Trump's claims to be antiwar. It is a complete and total nothing burger. It has nothing to do with corporate accountability, and everyone knows it, which is why it's not being taken seriously in this country. If the people behind RFK think they're going to achieve anything, they will be sadly disappointed. But they may still get rich in the process, since Trump will be operating a kleptocracy. But that's about the extent of any changes. The idea that this represents the Republicans taking over the issue of healthcare from Democrats is simply mistaken, except at the most superficial level of campaign rhetoric - and even then, the most effective rhetoric is nothing but paranoid anti-vax stuff.
Kamala Harris did offer bolder healthcare programs. One was having Medicare pay for senior living at home caregiver services. Right now that's only available through Medicaid, which is income/savings limited, basically for the poor and not the middle class. That was pretty big, but perhaps it came in too late in the shortened season.

This is bad analysis. There is really very little to no evidence that what the government recommended for food was bad in a sense, especially compared to the corporate garbage served everyday like fastfood, pop, candy, chips, etc. The problem is corporations entered the stage and started charging very little for junk food. Food deserts spring up where the only cheap food is fast food. Which is why the poor tend to be the ones with the poorest health. Obsessive amounts of work and stress has led to people prioritizing fast food over good food. And it's just always been this way, probably since the early 80's. MAHA is absolutely ridiculous and will not lead to a healthy life. The anti-vaccine stance alone should discredit anything they do. The fact people like you are choosing to flirt with objective pseudoscience and just brush it under the rug is what is going to doom us. How is that raw milk tasting with that bird flu? You think McDonalds and Wendy's are just going to sit there and be disbanded under RFKjr?
@@jshowao I'd also say that, for anyone concerned with diet and nutrition, good information was out there and not hard to find.Just if you engaged in the mindless consumption of the foods that were convenient and available, you were eating an unhealthy diet. Processed food that is bad for you? That was all explicitly on the label for most of time. Just look at the numbers for sodium. At no point was overconsumption of sodium a 'good thing.' The medical profession definitely stressed that. But yet so much processed food was extremely high in sodium. People just bought it because they were buying what corporations were selling. Nobody has ever suggested that soda, chips, candy, etc were healthy. The biggest policy failure is that the US government subsidized corn, which then become either high fructose corn syrup or feed for animals. But that's because of the pull of big ag companies, not anything about nutrition. We also have to discuss a unique thing about the US. People in the US drive more than people anywhere else. They bike less, walk less, and use transit less. This is a lot of time spent sitting, and it leads to time crunched people being tempted to go through the drive through for food rather than cook at home. Like a main issue in the US is car centric design. It gives the US food deserts, it gives us drive through fast food, and adds hours of sitting to everybody's life.
@smrndalodz7182 Most food in the US is high in sodium unless you went strict vegan or something. Even bread has high sodium. One slice of sara lee has more sodium than a bottle of mountain dew. What I mean is that the government never promoted this type of food. It was the food that existed from corporations that got people to eat it because that was all that was available. Walmart sells this crap, and fastfood places are literally everywhere. Unless you limited your diet strictly and looked at every nutrition label, there was no way you could avoid it. And if you tried to buy anything truly organic, you were priced out. If anything, you can blame the government from being negligent in regulating this crap and preventing corporations from producing it in the first place. But I guarantee you, if Democrats promoted this, Republicans and most people would go absolutely nuts. Its sad.
@@jshowao I agree pretty much with this. If you wanted to avoid unhealthy food it required a high degree of attention and education and you're preferences weren't accommodated by the market. Like people buy lots of foods in cans and jars, and it's mostly high sodium. Nobody checks. Though one huge factor is that food deserts become a thing in the US mostly in the 1980s thanks to the government allowing big chains to get preferential treatment from suppliers. It means that smaller stores were put out of business, and you'd get a few big box stores in a region.
@smrndalodz7182 Agreed. And its not that nobody checks, its also that that is whats available. Ive checked a couple times and its just hard to find food that checks all the boxes. You'd pretty much have to go full vegan. Much of the food has preparation time too and many people working multiple jobs or are poor dont have much time to do that Its also hard to break addictions to food. Ive tried many times to break my addiction to soda, but I just get sick of drinking water and tea all the time and I get so stressed at work working 12 hr days that I just need it to release

Very insightful video! Makes me want to revisit some topics from history class again but of course with more sources than just a few teachers and a couple curricula... One thing stood out to me however, and I will admit, I am nitpicking the nuances here, but this is a platform where we can respectfully share thoughts :). (And there is only so much one can fit in 18 minutes...) I agree with your overall point about the connotations of MediCARE vs MedicAID. I do think "care" takes on a more positive connotation, whereby when you care about someone or something, you tend to this person or thing willingly. The intent comes from the heart. However, I wouldn't say the connotation of "aid" is negative per se, but rather... not positive. But I like the way you said "aid" is something that "must be provided" (paraphrasing) rather than something that comes from the heart, like care would. "Aid" indicates urgency, seriousness, necessity... It's not a given that a willingness to help or passion for the cause are present. Anyways, thank you for your videos!! :D

I think what ultimately pisses me off as an American and one with a permanent physical disability is that health here is entirely relegated to the individual and that’s what RFK Jr and his supporters want. There’s also all these strange diets, supplements and grifting in these circles. It is very social Darwinist. We have basically no public health system in the USA and everyone knows health insurance here is very complicated, inefficient and expensive. Our public health authorities are also very neutered federally in what they can do to slow the spread of disease or combat non infectious disease. RFK Jr has said a lot of insane things about vaccines even though we know they’ve made the world a safer place. I do agree with his food takes to an extent but I don’t think he’d accomplish this under a Trump admin as to make the US food supply safer than it currently is (which is becoming worse) we need more inspectors and regulations which are opposed to by conservatism.

A couple of points. I was working in medical device during the time period when the Affordable Care Act was passed. The US had just entered an enormous and deep recession with the crash of the housing market. Democrats had a SUPERMAJORITY going into 2009. They didn't negotiate with anyone. Obama tried to get the parties working together, he met with Republicans. However, when he asked congressional Democrats to meet with them... they locked the freaking door. I was also very active in politics at this time and had been in several paid positions within the Democratic Party of my state. It's almost impossible to explain how angry the leadership was with Obama for jumping the line and kicking out Clinton who had a 100% chance of winning and being the first female president. They did not want to follow his lead... and this fight went on for nearly his entire term. To this day he has never turned over his fundraising mechanism nor his get out the vote system to the party. It's also why they took steps to block Bernie Sanders from doing the same thing in both 2016 and 2020. Its also worth noting that US healthcare 2005 was amazing compared to 2015... for the people who had access. About 30% of the population feels this change significantly. One of my family members is a drug dealer and could never get access to healthcare... many working poor had the same issue. Back in 2005 healthcare was for the middle class, wealthy, and people who didn't work... ever. If you were poor and had a job, Medicaid basically cut you out. The ACA fixed that and it's awesome, BUT they never did anything to train more physicians or nurses. So, now we have people diagnosed with cancer and they can't get an appointment to start treatment for 4 months... it's insanity. So, the system is this cobbled together mess that isn't working for anyone. BUT it's the traditionally Republican Voters who have suffered the most from the changes.

i think also the institutionalization of the democratic party has propelled the health approach of RFK and Republicans to be deemed as more beneficial to the American populace. anti establishment politics has seeped into even this issue, democrats expand healthcare yet their becoming the establishment party overshadows their position on the issue, and the public has deemed RFK’s alternative approach to healthcare despite it being tied to the Republican party who seeks to further privatize healthcare as better for the working class.
I have a bad feeling about this "maha" movement. They want to apply a bootstrapism mindset to healthcare. It's your fault for not living healthy (enough) so I don't want to pay for your mistakes. This mindset is so common amongst conservatives already. You've diabetes? Should have eaten healthier. Never mind that type 1 doesn't work that way at all and type 2 is getting more common because our food environment is dominated by cheap high-carb processed food instead of what is normal for humans to eat. But let's put the emphasis on the individual rather than a systemic approach, which would require government regulations can't have that... Really, I'm serious, watch them point to smoking chemo patients as a justification to end the ACA, Medicaid & Medicare. To then tell people that it's their individual responsibility to live healthy. Doesn't help that this movement is mostly made up of "health entrepreneurs" and an anti-vaxxer, all pedaling pseudo-science either.
The other thing is that making 'healthy' choices is less about choice and more about having healthier choices available. A lot of affluent people buy into various 'health' treatments that do nothing. They're just a form of conspicuous consumption. But using them and then giving them credit allows those people to feel superior.

This is a great subject, one i feel a little torn about, because one, I am a healthy person and do my best to stay healthy, but i know nor everyone is as fortunate, so i know we need a system to make health as common sense as possible for a wide variety of people, that uncludes affordability. Its complicated, but i do know that we all have a chance at living healthy and we should in the most sensible and economic way. I do feel people obsess over it and nothing we can do about that. I like this video quite a bit. I also think it misses a significant part of the issue. I’m going to use my State of Michigan as an example here because I’m familiar with it but this is not the only example. The example is going to show why democrats are still very vocally the party of healthcare and why hardly anyone knows it. First, the problem of scale. The US is huge. Michigan alone has a population of ≈10 million, roughly equivalent to Sweden or a quarter of the total population of Canada. As a result healthcare politics are inherently state and local politics. Second, trying to break into a the national news cycle with local accomplishments is often futile. Any attempts to discuss true progress in healthcare at a national level requires spotlighting local progress. In Michigan for example we have been experiencing a radical shortage of mental healthcare providers. Our facilities under Republican administrations have been defunded and closed. Many people needing acute hospital admission were being shipped out of state because there was literally no where to put them. Under Biden’s infrastructure legislation we actually got the funding to build new hospitals. We’ve also been able to open new services like a behavioral health crisis unit in Grand Rapids. This diverts patients away from the emergency room and gets them directly to mental health professionals. Not only does that lead to better outcomes for psych patients but also frees the ER to address other types of medical emergency more efficiently. All of that is the direct result of Michigan’s national and local Dems coordinating to make it happen. They have even tried to make it into news cycles without success because the next point. Three, the media LOVE Trump. Trump headlines dominate every outlet regardless of any ideological bias. Headlines from spring 2023 about new mental health infrastructure in Michigan could not compete with headlines about Trump Liable for Sexual Abuse or Trump On Tape Talking About Classified Documents or Trump Talked About Bombing Mexico. Those are rage bait, attention grabbing, money making headlines. This was a Dem initiative that shows they are ACTUALLY doing some about healthcare. MAHA is clickbait nonsense that won’t address any of the problems Americans are actively suffering from. It’s said Dems need better messaging to show they are the party of healthcare. I have no idea how they are supposed to compete with Trump promising All Hell To Pay in the Middle East. The media ecosystem ignores real progress for the sake of clicks and views. The model of for-profit, entertainment oriented news will not be a reliable avenue for that messaging and not even nontraditional sources like you end up focusing on it. Many of the moderate to left people who literally live in the areas where these projects are happening had no idea they existed when I brought it up to them. I’m truly at a loss for any way forward that will result in meaningful progress. It's very hard to extract junk food and laziness from your lifestyle once it's been fully embedded, not to mention a car-worship culture where walking anywhere is seen as abnormal. I have schizophrenia, the condition and treatment of people with my condition is very poor. This movement impacts treatment of schizophrenia as RFK associates with MAHA adjacent psychologists who view schizophrenia as a metabolic issue that can be alleviated if we just follow certain diets. Diet cures for my condition are a historical failure. The current diet pushed is the keto diet which states that ketosis will extinguish or lessen schizophrenia. Many with my condition have gone off their medication to follow this path. This is dangerous for them and may cause serious harm. There is no repeatable and clinically validated data for this diet but it is pushed hard in conjunction with this movement. Thanks for reading.
Not to mention staying in prolonged ketosis is dangerous for the body. Most if any of the benefits are seen during the refeeding periods after coming out of ketosis those metabolic processes are where the healthy aspect lie, it’s only safe to be in for about three days. It can cause Oregon failure and seizures(ironically). It stopped being studied as a treatment for epilepsy only after several children died.
The problem is, most people who disagree with RFK’s dangerous beliefs regarding the disabled and neurodivergent agree with him that disabled and neurodivergent people are less than human. Their complicity has brought us to this point.

I’ve worked in health insurance for the better part of 20 years. In fact, the only reason I got into it was I was aging off my parents’ plan, my employer scheduled me to work 37.5 hours a week so they didn’t have to offer me insurance, and I have a pre-existing condition. I needed insurance, so I thought, why not just work for them? So in all this time, I could probably write a novel from how messed up the whole healthcare system is (not just insurance) from top to bottom. And a lot needs changing, and that is definitely not to let insurance off the hook, but no one, and certainly not this incoming administration, is proposing what needs to be done because, capitalism. Yeah, Big Pharma is messed up, but nothing RFK Jr is proposing will solve the kitchen table problem of cost. There need to be caps on cost, especially orphan drugs which are predatorily priced at millions of dollars a year, especially when they get government grants and often, at least in later stages, people either volunteer or pay to be part of drug trials. Research and development is a small fraction of the cost of these drugs. It’s the ads and kickbacks to crooked doctors that make up the bulk of their expenses. Then, even when generics come out (and that doesn’t include some of the biggest drivers of cost, biologics, which don’t technically have a generic as US law defines it) they play around with it, drop manufacturing the generic when a new, shiny (not better) drug comes out. They mess around with dosing to prolong the process to producing the generic. If you can buy this stuff in Canada at a fraction of the cost, there’s just no reason you can’t cap it here, other than many politicians, on both sides, being on the receiving end of Big Pharma lobbying money, and having vested interests in these companies. RFK Jr and Dr. Oz hawking supplements over drugs that actually work is not really sticking it to Big Pharma, at least not in anyway to make a difference in the cost to the consumer.

One of the reasons why things have turned out the way they have is some people (including some people in medicine, biology, and chemistry and anti-"scam" types) have handled alternative medicine so atrociously, and people have listened to them too much. Instead of nitpicking what people SAY, they should have focused on what people MEAN and helped them verbalize their thoughts better, not just invalidate them, tell them they're wrong, or soapboxed their biases as the truth. And they gave alternative medicine too much negative publicity while letting conventional medicine off the hook and threw the baby out with the bathwater when it came to what's correct and what's not.

I know this would be a massive undertaking but I would love to see a video digging into differing models of insurance and healthcare. Hearing a person from a country with socialized medicine lament quality is something I am immediately frustrated, and frankly angered, by.
Americans have to climb mountains to even have health insurance. My 1 yr old baby was put on a $1,200 monthly (!) spend down and it took multiple months to correct this error. I had to delay his pediatrician appointments, his vaccinations, his lead test bc the doctor won’t see the baby if they are uninsured. I am still making frequent calls to have the $800 of bills covered.
A close friend and her partner are unable/unwilling to have intercourse bc she no longer has insurance through work and her new job won’t establish insurance for 90 days.
That's understandable, but what she meant is that 20 years ago our health care system was better that what it is today, even if for Americans it would be a dream compared to what they have to endure.
Because in Europe where most countries have a good healthcare system, the private companies, hedge funds and greedy industries try to privatise it, little by little. It's a never ending fight.

i think there are some fantastic and informative points in this video regarding the MAHA phenomenon, as an American I do feel the inclination to push back on the implicit framing that the pre-neoliberal democratic party made bold campaigns, its true that the party at that point received a large amount of funding from labor unions which lost their power with the neoliberal era and resulted in clinton turning the party into a more corporatist l'extrême centre liberal party, but the efforts of medicaid and medicare were ultimately bandaid solutions in their own right which did not make any bold choices like nationalization of healthcare itself or anything like that, in comparison it seems more significant, but we should't let that make these postwar policies towards health seem radical or anything

It's a common misconception that every piece of legislation was its' own end goal. It's not that JFK or LBJ didn't want something like an American NHS, it's that with the pushback at the time they had to bargain down to healthcare for seniors only with a poverty program. The hope at the time was to expand from there, but then Nixon, Reagan and the neoliberal era happened.

I get my news through video essays rather than directly even though I'm in america. It just softens the shocks sometimes. This is kind of filling me in on some things I didn't realize. I personally am a disabled American who's not old enough to retire but cannot work anymore so I'm on Medicaid which comes with my social security disability income. Unfortunately they don't talk about health outcomes for people like me who are no longer able to work but still young. Right now it feels like they want us all dead. The truth is if I had access to more than Medicaid will pay for I might have some improvements in my health that would return me to the productive workforce. In other words I might not be considered disabled if I had access to certain medications and therapies that Medicaid will not cover But I'm not worth it to them I guess.
It's good about preventative health screenings like all of my mammograms and stuff but it's really crappy about mental health coverage
Another irony is that Medicaid paid for my official neuropsychology autism diagnosis. So all those people who told me my self-diagnosis wasn't real can suck it I went and got a real diagnosis. However that diagnosis means nothing if RFK thinks adult autism doesn't exist.
Anecdotally, I know multiple people in my social circle who said they like RFK jr because he "is the only the candidate talking about the environment" or "he wants to get the unhealthy chemicals out of our food." It's worrisome how a public figure who pushes all kinds of harmful misinformation has become the face of healthcare policy in America.

I like that you mentioned the rebranding of Republicans interest in public health started with the covid pandemic, however, it it more than a coincidence that an aesthetic-based focus on health emerged from MAHA at this time. The pandemic has disabled millions and continues to do so as mitigations are a thing of the past. When a mass disabling event happens, society becomes more hostile to the disabled, more ableist and comfortable with eugenics (think of people saying "only the vulnerable are at risk"). The democrats have left these people behind by declaring the pandemic "over" despite it clearly not being so. And complete misinformation about disability and chronic illness, which the mainstream media is complicit in, people fall for snake oil salesmen and fascist-lite public health campaigns. I think this video makes two mistakes (not counting the questionable choices with the audio): 1. It fails to fully account for the political dynamics that have resulted in Democrats being afraid of their own shadows. Republicans have achieved such great success with their scorched earth policies that Democrats don't want to stick their neck out about anything. Obamacare was so wrenching for Democrats they don't want to go through anything like that again. And they don't have to. The professional Democrats continue to advance in their careers using the funds from the billionaires who own them, so they don't have a need to do anything positive.
2. MAHA is extremely trivial and has been no more substantive for the Trump campaign than Trump's claims to be antiwar. It is a complete and total nothing burger. It has nothing to do with corporate accountability, and everyone knows it, which is why it's not being taken seriously in this country. Kamala Harris did offer bolder healthcare programs. One was having Medicare pay for senior living at home caregiver services. Right now that's only available through Medicaid, which is income/savings limited, basically for the poor and not the middle class. That was pretty big, but perhaps it came in too late in the shortened season.

As an outsider it's pretty insane to see the country so divided in two camps. And also completely lacking the nuance to agree to certain topics on either side. RFK jr could be advocating for drinking water daily and people who oppose him would probably call him a nutjob and stop drinking it because that now is a 'right wing' thing to do.

I think its also important to understand American health is what the prevailing sentiment at the time was for "what you should eat in a day".

I think what we are seeing with the MAHA movement ( that I agree in principle with ) is a rebuke to the last 50+ years of the terrible food advice that was given to parents and children.
I think is a healthy swing in the shifting sentiment about the Food we health outcomes here in the untied states. Even with the science skepticism portion of the MAHA movement, It is in my view, all in all, a healthy development for food and healthcare here in the States. But we will have to wait to see the actual health care outcomes of any policy decisions made by the incoming administration. This is bad analysis. There is really very little to no evidence that what the government recommended for food was bad in a sense, especially compared to the corporate garbage served everyday like fastfood, pop, candy, chips, etc.
The problem is corporations entered the stage and started charging very little for junk food. Food deserts spring up where the only cheap food is fast food. Which is why the poor tend to be the ones with the poorest health.
Obsessive amounts of work and stress has led to people prioritizing fast food over good food. And it's just always been this way, probably since the early 80's.
MAHA is absolutely ridiculous and will not lead to a healthy life. The anti-vaccine stance alone should discredit anything they do.

Processed food that is bad for you? That was all explicitly on the label for most of time. Just look at the numbers for sodium. At no point was overconsumption of sodium a 'good thing.' The medical profession definitely stressed that. But yet so much processed food was extremely high in sodium. People just bought it because they were buying what corporations were selling. Nobody has ever suggested that soda, chips, candy, etc were healthy.
The biggest policy failure is that the US government subsidized corn, which then become either high fructose corn syrup or feed for animals. But that's because of the pull of big ag companies, not anything about nutrition.
We also have to discuss a unique thing about the US. People in the US drive more than people anywhere else. They bike less, walk less, and use transit less. This is a lot of time spent sitting, and it leads to time crunched people being tempted to go through the drive through for food rather than cook at home. Like a main issue in the US is car centric design. It gives the US food deserts, it gives us drive through fast food, and adds hours of sitting to everybody's life.
@smrndalodz7182 Most food in the US is high in sodium unless you went strict vegan or something. Even bread has high sodium. One slice of sara lee has more sodium than a bottle of mountain dew.
What I mean is that the government never promoted this type of food. It was the food that existed from corporations that got people to eat it because that was all that was available. Walmart sells this crap, and fastfood places are literally everywhere.
Unless you limited your diet strictly and looked at every nutrition label, there was no way you could avoid it.
And if you tried to buy anything truly organic, you were priced out.
If anything, you can blame the government from being negligent in regulating this crap and preventing corporations from producing it in the first place. But I guarantee you, if Democrats promoted this, Republicans and most people would go absolutely nuts. Its sad.
@@jshowao I agree pretty much with this. If you wanted to avoid unhealthy food it required a high degree of attention and education and you're preferences weren't accommodated by the market. Like people buy lots of foods in cans and jars, and it's mostly high sodium. Nobody checks.
Though one huge factor is that food deserts become a thing in the US mostly in the 1980s thanks to the government allowing big chains to get preferential treatment from suppliers. It means that smaller stores were put out of business, and you'd get a few big box stores in a region.

Ive checked a couple times and its just hard to find food that checks all the boxes. You'd pretty much have to go full vegan. Much of the food has preparation time too and many people working multiple jobs or are poor dont have much time to do that
Its also hard to break addictions to food. Ive tried many times to break my addiction to soda, but I just get sick of drinking water and tea all the time and I get so stressed at work working 12 hr days that I just need it to release

I agree with your overall point about the connotations of MediCARE vs MedicAID. I do think "care" takes on a more positive connotation, whereby when you care about someone or something, you tend to this person or thing willingly. The intent comes from the heart. However, I wouldn't say the connotation of "aid" is negative per se, but rather... not positive. But I like the way you said "aid" is something that "must be provided" (paraphrasing) rather than something that comes from the heart, like care would. "Aid" indicates urgency, seriousness, necessity... It's not a given that a willingness to help or passion for the cause are present.

I think what ultimately pisses me off as an American and one with a permanent physical disability is that health here is entirely relegated to the individual and that’s what RFK Jr and his supporters want. There’s also all these strange diets, supplements and grifting in these circles. It is very social Darwinist. We have basically no public health system in the USA and everyone knows health insurance here is very complicated, inefficient and expensive. Our public health authorities are also very neutered federally in what they can do to slow the spread of disease or combat non infectious disease. RFK Jr has said a lot of insane things about vaccines even though we know they’ve made the world a safer place. I do agree with his food takes to an extent but I don’t think he’d accomplish this under a Trump admin as to make the US food supply safer than it currently is (which is becoming worse) we need more inspectors and regulations which are opposed to by conservatism.

A couple of points. I was working in medical device during the time period when the Affordable Care Act was passed. The US had just entered an enormous and deep recession with the crash of the housing market. Democrats had a SUPERMAJORITY going into 2009. They didn't negotiate with anyone. Obama tried to get the parties working together, he met with Republicans. However, when he asked congressional Democrats to meet with them... they locked the freaking door. I was also very active in politics at this time and had been in several paid positions within the Democratic Party of my state. It's almost impossible to explain how angry the leadership was with Obama for jumping the line and kicking out Clinton who had a 100% chance of winning and being the first female president. They did not want to follow his lead... and this fight went on for nearly his entire term. To this day he has never turned over his fundraising mechanism nor his get out the vote system to the party. It's also why they took steps to block Bernie Sanders from doing the same thing in both 2016 and 2020.
Its also worth noting that US healthcare 2005 was amazing compared to 2015... for the people who had access. About 30% of the population feels this change significantly. One of my family members is a drug dealer and could never get access to healthcare... many working poor had the same issue. Back in 2005 healthcare was for the middle class, wealthy, and people who didn't work... ever. If you were poor and had a job, Medicaid basically cut you out. The ACA fixed that and it's awesome, BUT they never did anything to train more physicians or nurses. So, now we have people diagnosed with cancer and they can't get an appointment to start treatment for 4 months... it's insanity. So, the system is this cobbled together mess that isn't working for anyone. BUT it's the traditionally Republican Voters who have suffered the most from the changes.

The other thing is that making 'healthy' choices is less about choice and more about having healthier choices available. A lot of affluent people buy into various 'health' treatments that do nothing. They're just a form of conspicuous consumption. But using them and then giving them credit allows those people to feel superior.

Also, I feel the need to clarify something about my OP. People should be encouraged to make healthy choices for their own sake, and in a left-wing movement, the focus would be on encouraging people to make healthy choices as much as possible. However, in a right-wing movement of this type, I feel like the focus is instead going to be on condemning every unhealthy choice a person makes.

This is a great subject, one i feel a little torn about, because one, I am a healthy person and do my best to stay healthy, but i know nor everyone is as fortunate, so i know we need a system to make health as common sense as possible for a wide variety of people, that uncludes affordability. Its complicated, but i do know that we all have a chance at living healthy and we should in the most sensible and economic way. I do feel people obsess over it and nothing we can do about that. There are a lot of historical parallels between today and pre Great War Europe… This right wing extremism keeps me up at night, obviously times are different and this isn’t a prediction of WW3 or anything, I am just extremely worried, I feel like we are rapidly regressing.
I like this video quite a bit. I also think it misses a significant part of the issue. I’m going to use my State of Michigan as an example here because I’m familiar with it but this is not the only example. The example is going to show why democrats are still very vocally the party of healthcare and why hardly anyone knows it.
First, the problem of scale. The US is huge. Michigan alone has a population of ≈10 million, roughly equivalent to Sweden or a quarter of the total population of Canada. As a result healthcare politics are inherently state and local politics.
Second, trying to break into a the national news cycle with local accomplishments is often futile. Any attempts to discuss true progress in healthcare at a national level requires spotlighting local progress. In Michigan for example we have been experiencing a radical shortage of mental healthcare providers. Our facilities under Republican administrations have been defunded and closed. Many people needing acute hospital admission were being shipped out of state because there was literally no where to put them.
Under Biden’s infrastructure legislation we actually got the funding to build new hospitals. We’ve also been able to open new services like a behavioral health crisis unit in Grand Rapids. This diverts patients away from the emergency room and gets them directly to mental health professionals. Not only does that lead to better outcomes for psych patients but also frees the ER to address other types of medical emergency more efficiently.
All of that is the direct result of Michigan’s national and local Dems coordinating to make it happen. They have even tried to make it into news cycles without success because the next point.
Three, the media LOVE Trump. Trump headlines dominate every outlet regardless of any ideological bias. Headlines from spring 2023 about new mental health infrastructure in Michigan could not compete with headlines about Trump Liable for Sexual Abuse or Trump On Tape Talking About Classified Documents or Trump Talked About Bombing Mexico. Those are rage bait, attention grabbing, money making headlines.
This was a Dem initiative that shows they are ACTUALLY doing some about healthcare. MAHA is clickbait nonsense that won’t address any of the problems Americans are actively suffering from.
It’s said Dems need better messaging to show they are the party of healthcare. I have no idea how they are supposed to compete with Trump promising All Hell To Pay in the Middle East. The media ecosystem ignores real progress for the sake of clicks and views. The model of for-profit, entertainment oriented news will not be a reliable avenue for that messaging and not even nontraditional sources like you end up focusing on it. Many of the moderate to left people who literally live in the areas where these projects are happening had no idea they existed when I brought it up to them.
I’m truly at a loss for any way forward that will result in meaningful progress. I’ll put some of the articles that did come out here locally below in case anyone wants to verify what I’m talking about ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's very hard to extract junk food and laziness from your lifestyle once it's been fully embedded, not to mention a car-worship culture where walking anywhere is seen as abnormal. In many ways America is a victim of its own success, in that being so singularly dominant across the world has inculcated a lot of very bad habits at home, we have allowed ourselves to become extremely lazy and ignorant just because we could get away with it.
