    This lab tour shines a spotlight on Elmor Labs and the work they're doing everywhere in the industry. Their custom hardware has found its way into major labs at AMD and other reputable companies, but they're rarely talked about. Elmor's specialization has been in overclocking, but he's expanded into more consumer-focused experimentation in recent years. This mad science lab gives an educational look at external clock generation overclocking, load devices, fan controllers, and more.

    Sorry for being late by a day on this one! Lost my voice on Friday after filming news videos and needed to do the voice over for it. It's back now though! Big thanks to Elmor for showing all the cool prototypes and taking the time to teach us about external clock gen & OC overrides! Some really cool stuff in this video and we wanted to bring a spotlight to what they're doing. Check out our previous tour in this series over here, where we show how RAM is made: ua-cam.com/video/---fHu9jFtw/v-deo.html

    It was a blast hosting you and your team Steve! You did a great job with the video, thank you so much :) Regarding debug cards, we are looking at solutions. We may do another run of the LPC type cards for older boards now that the chip shortage is over and maybe some type of hybrid that can support at least some of the newer boards that offer Serial/UART output for port 80 data.

    The extreme overclockers remind me of the how the old moonshiners modified their cars, which led to the birth of Nascar and the muscle cars of the 60's and 70's from the big three automakers. The Hot Rodders of the 50's and 60's are the grandparents of the overclockers, they are both after better perfomance, they are just working in a different medium.

    15:30 can't say how often I've looked at a project and wanted a dedicated external fan control for it, not just computers. As for bios, I've run across some motherboards where the fan RPM eventually sticks and never changes after some time of the computer being on (from a few mobo makers), becomes super annoying if I'm in the middle of a project and have to save and close everything just to reboot to fix the bios fan control. A dedicated external fan control would be so nice to fix that (esp for the GN R7 build PC).
    Great vid Steve, Elmor and crews. B)

    • @Uncle_Fred
      @Uncle_Fred 7 місяців тому +2

      I had this same problem too, but with my GPU. Fans would lock iut at 100% rpm, requiring a reboot. I solved this issue by connecting the fans to an Aquacomputer fan controller, and using the fan controller software to monitor Temps and run it's own fan curve.

    19:18 i love the fact that you brought up the question about the polling rate of that device, it can matter a lot as it clearly shows how important it is to know about it when you set it to the lowest and you see it go from low 2 digit number to very high 3 digit numbers so fast, transient loads man...

    • @igoresque
      @igoresque 7 місяців тому

      I don't think it's exactly polling rate they were talking about, more like how long the averaging window is. I assume that it measures 29us at all times, since 29us is the lowest averaging window, and that is probably the polling rate.
      And there's also a refresh rate of the screen, which looks like 10-15 fps.

    What a great collection of vintage test equipment at 5:54 . It's been ages since I saw an HP 3457a (it's from 1985), but it's a great device (it's the long one). I think that's a HP 3478a on the right, fluke 8842a on the left. I don't recognize the digital thermometer above the 3478a or what appears to be a keithley 2000 clone to the left of it. The Hameg analog scope is nice to see too, though I'm not sure what it's better than the Rigol DS2102A (no doubt modded to 300 MHz).

    A pluggable debug/ postcode LED screen would be awesome, i think it should be mandatory in every motherboard anyway it makes everyone's life more easy. I have not tried for years but does the old speaker and beep thing even work today? Its the 1 thing everyone neglects to add to DIY builds (i have myself for years anyways) but PC's used to always come with a small speaker that emitted beeps for error codes can save so much time with something to read postcodes especially when you have a RAM or CPU seating issue.

    You know I have been building, modding, and tearing apart computers since '97. I have a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. I spend much of my free time reading about hardware and software. None of that is to brag, but instead I'm honestly humbled by how hard it was to keep up with this absolute lightning blitz of one massive component after another. I feel like every device in this video was worth slowing way down and covering in excruciating detail.
    Interesting thought experiment: put Elmor and Wendell from L1T in a room together with a mic and camera for an unedited longform discussion. Topic: computers. Annnnnd GO!
