Tony is great when he's talking about the history, but when he's got to interview an actual person he comes off as stiff and disinterested. I don't think Tony relates to the common working man very well.
He's a genuinely nice bloke , I met him when time team came to my area & helped us excavate a group of Romano/ British pagan temples. He wouldn't last long doing time team if he didn't get on with us archaeologists, were very down to earth, quite loud, boisterous, always doing pranks on each other, & he fitted in very well.

It's always bothered me the way Hollywood feels the need to twist the facts of history for the sake of dramatic effect. Either tell it like it really happened or make it a work of fiction. Why embellish the facts and represent fiction as fact?

Does anybody know when & why Wallace began to be called "Braveheart"? I heard a long time ago that the Victorians made a mistake & started calling William Wallace "Braveheart" instead of Robert the Bruce, but I don't know if that is correct. Surely Mel Gibson isn't responsible for that too, is he?

Tony is great when he's talking about the history, but when he's got to interview an actual person he comes off as stiff and disinterested. I don't think Tony relates to the common working man very well.
He's a genuinely nice bloke , I met him when time team came to my area & helped us excavate a group of Romano/ British pagan temples.
He wouldn't last long doing time team if he didn't get on with us archaeologists, were very down to earth, quite loud, boisterous, always doing pranks on each other, & he fitted in very well.
Oh c'mon Tony, you're better than this. Most of this version of his story is from Blind Harry who was writing the story to create a nationalist folk hero during another period of war 200 years after Wallace died. The love story was added even later than that. Pretty poor really.

Common sense is all the evidence one needs to know this to be false. It was logistically impossible to field an army of that size in that area at that time. The obvious reason is to conflate the difficulties encountered by Wallace in defeating the English by grossly inflating their numbers.
