Queen Elizabeth Begins Historic Irish Republic Visit

- The Queen has arrived in the Irish Republic for the start of an historic state visit.
The monarch, dressed in emerald green and accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, landed at Baldonnel aerodrome at around midday.
She was greeted by British Ambassador Julian King, Ireland's Ambassador to the UK Bobby McDonagh and Ireland's deputy prime minister, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore.

It's the Republic of Ireland and not "the Irish Republic", the Irish Republic consists of 32 counties.
She isn’t the first monarch to step into the free state.

Nothing to get fussy about. The majority of people around the world use the term Republic of Ireland to distinguish the nation from the island. I don't see how that's pejorative. People refer to the Republic of China as "Taiwan" and The People's Republic of China as "China" without blinking an eye. Whatever conflicts exist between both Chinese nations, our references to them are unrelated. When did anyone ever call Mexico by its official name, The United Mexican States?

Are you smoking something? Ireland is Republic and the name of the country is Ireland but the Republic of Ireland is also equally valid as it denominates its constitutional status, i.e. its not a Monarchy like Spain or Britain, its a Republic like the US or France.

Why is everybody het up about the Irish Republic, Vs the Republic of Ireland? What's the difference?
It sums up the 'point de guerre' of the entire troubled 20th century relationship between Britain and let's call it 'independent Ireland as a concept'
The current state of Ireland is officially called 'The Republic of Ireland' and doesnt include the part currently called 'Northern Ireland' which is still held by Britain.
The name 'Irish Republic' was the name given to the revolutionary state, consisting of the whole island of Ireland in 1919 by the revolutionary Republican movement. It was never politically recognised and only managed to control at most 21 of the 32 counties of the whole of Ireland. The Irish Republican Army fought the Brutish in The Irish Civil War and succeeded in establishing the formalised 'Irish Free State' but this was still a British Dominion until full Irish independence.
The point is Irish Republicanism originally started oit aiming to take control of the whole island. They got most of the island but not the 6 counties of 'Northern Ireland' which has led to much trouble ever since.......

I completely get why the Irish want a united Ireland, but I just don't understand getting all annoyed about the name. It's a distinction without a difference.
@@bell191991 Yes but the name was given to it by the nationalists during the civil war and never recognised internationally. It only existed because the republicans declared it's existance. When de facto it was "that portion of land controlled by the republicans who wish to control the entire island but currently dont " Once the war got settled with Britain still holding the N.I. six counties it became the Irish Free State but that obviously didnt encompass the entire island as the six counties remained with GB. Essentially the Republican movement ever since has sought to completely control the entire island as the modern, complete version of the 'Irish Republic' probably not called that though as the politics of that name are polarising.

Sorry, it is something to get fussy about. Language is important. The British likes to use that term to deny the fact that the Irish constitution recognizes the entire island to be one country. Just like they like to refer to Londonderry although the citizens changed its name to Derry a long time ago.
actually the Irish constitution does not claim the whole island, it recognises NI as part of the UK and says unity can only come via consent of the people of NI, also the island is not one nation it is two nations , also Derry is still officially Londonderry , the council changed the name of the council but the name of the city is still londonderry as only the monarch can change that
