    Crazy story. One of my closest childhood friends is the kid from the missing poster who turns into a jump scare. We have never spoken of this movie. Ever.

    here's what really pissed me off. by watching the movie, it appears that it really is the boogeyman. yet in plot synopsis and even in interviews with the filmmakers, they said that it IS in his head. that his father just took off and left and that was his way of dealing with it. the movie itself didn't make sense, and the filmmakers explanations just muddied the waters even worse

    I actually like the idea of destroying a nightmare entity through destroying the objects that frightened the hero as a child! It's kind of interesting!

      +Lulu Calliope Really? It seems kind of lame to me, I mean doesn't smashing your my little pony doll and lamp to get rid of a ghost kind of seem really silly when you say it out loud? (Especially considering how fucking fast he killed the dad, why not just kill this guy?)

    • @GreenBean
      @GreenBean 9 років тому +8

      +Lulu Calliope I really like the idea as well, but like a lot of things in the movie, I think it could have been done better, like...The fact that all of those things were intact, and in the same place, after 15 years is a little hard to believe.
      I think it would have made more sense if he was still a kid, or since they were playing with time nonsense anyways, he could have gone 15 years into the past to destroy the objects that created his fear of the boogie man.

      +Christopher Jones perhaps if it was more metaphorical for him overcoming his phobias and recovering from the trauma of his father being killed rather than this supernatural child abductor.

    I'll give the movie this, it's the best of its own trilogy. Low bar, I know, but... it's technically not nothing? The boogeyman having a form designed to evoke childhood fears was kind of interesting, although it would have been nice had such fears actually been frightening. And it's in some ways directly responsible for creating the sequels, which is a little scary... Yeah, I'm grasping. Still it's a bit fun to see Phelous make such a good case for having the Boogeyman not be real in this one, and then see him sigh at Boogeyman 2's attempt to do just that. Longstanding principle of mine: "there's no premise so terrible it can't be salvaged, and none so good it can't be ruined."

    Luckily, I worked at a movie theater when this came out, and didn't pay money.
    I just loved how noone really talks about the fact that the guy's Dad was 'taken' by the Boogeyman. They all just go brain-dead and go, "...he left..."

    the text at the end is something i wonder at the end of nearly every horror movie with a survivor and no corpse of a human killer. How the hell are they going to explain it was actually a demon/now MIA slasher/doll/internet ghost and not them who killed everybody and strategically placed their bodies to be found later

      Reminds me of i think it might have been Disney that made a movie where the boogeyman is real but instead of just being a monster it was forgotten imaginary friends that would turn into a boogeyman.
      Not really sure why it made me think of it lol but i believe it was called 'don't look under the bed'
      Oh Jude law did really well as pitch though too definitely beat out expectations.

  • @darrelsam419
    @darrelsam419 9 років тому +60

    I agree with you, the movie would have been better if it was all in his head. Or at least make the scares more subtle, like instead of having jumpscares everywhere and suddenly zooming in and out of things ridiculously, have a slow build-up and never actually show the Boogieman itself. The movie has some very creative ideas and nice, creepy scenes, but the sudden zooming in and out as well as the ridiculousness of the Boogeyman just ruined it.

      You can really tell that they were made by the same person:
      1. Loved ones are killed by a supernatural entity that preys on children.
      2. Girlfriend's name is Jessica.
      3. Main character tries to move on and have a normal life but unfortunate news about a parent forces them to get involved again.
      4. Supernatural monster makes main character watch as it kills his girlfriend after the main character gets back in the game.

    That yelling at people only works if:
    A: it’s the middle of the day and you know they’re home.
    B: You already rung them up and are arriving.
    C: You’re in the house yelling across it while they’re there.
    Or D: A stupid movie cliche where people do actually hide.
    Again, if they handled it differently, smashing objects would have worked as how like IT, it’s destruction of the trauma and not actually just toys

    Scariest thing about this film is the browser game. Seriously, that game used to terrify the shit out of me and my friends. It was listed under the "NB! Adult content" section of our go-to gaming site, 1001spill (1001games), so of course we had to check it out. It was actually this kinda shitty point-and-click game where you had to choose between two doors. Pick the right door and you'll go free, pick the wrong door and there he'll be. I think there was more to it, but we never got past the door section (there were more than one). I dunno, it had creepy music, an eerie atmosphere and we were young and inexperienced.

    *Xena has a husband* now?! I thought she was lesbian. 😆💦 At least her appearance made the movie a bit better for the sake of having something to laugh at. I do feel strong nostalgia whenever I see her though

    Biggest missed opportunity of both this movie and this review. Is that it didn't use Henry Hall's Here comes the Boogeyman song.

    I couldn't muster up any fear for this movie when I watched it as a child, so I thought that maybe the themes were just too complex for me to hand at the time. I guess not.

    To be fair, some of the editing (when it isn't dated) is pretty cool sometimes.

    Does The Boogeyman eats live worms and carries a clock around his neck in this version?
