Great reaction, Carl XII (12) is clearly a missunderstood king in peoples eyes today, he’s known as the warrior king in Sweden, but he actually never started a war, he either inherited wars from his ancesters or was attacked by other countries.
I think you should go for Poltava as the next song, in my opinion one of the best Sabaton songs ever.
Would be fun to a reaction to both the Swedish and english versions at the same time, just to compare the lyrics!

Politics is not as simple as just making peace with his enemy. Because there is such a thing as Truce Breakers and violating the peace treaty made with Denmark and Saxony, as both violated it and joined the Russian to destroy the Swedish Empire. He wanted to end the war, but not with quick diplomacy, he wanted to be sure that Sweden would not be attacked for a long time, as Sweden has for most of its history been involved in war. There are nuances to the decisions of King Karl XII that many seem to not understand.

Thats true, Carolus Rex was shot in Norway. Still today it is unowned who killed him. It’s natuaral to think a Norwegian soldier shot him but the angel of the shot gives us that either it was an insane long shot or it actually came from the swedish troops. Many where tired of the war and it costed enormous amount of money and lives. But as they sing, we have no answer

As a norwegian I believe he was killed by a cannister shot from our side. I don't know if the swedes believe that to be true. The soldiers has been by his side for so long, and suddenly decided to kill their king? Maybe it was a stray shot? What do you swedes think?

@@PetterVesselI also belive it was a Norwegian who shot him. It has been many theories over the year and what have among other things have been a problem is the size of the penetration hole in the kings scull and the extraction hole. One assumed that the later was bigger. And by that assumption he should be shot from the left.. and there where only swedish troops to the left.. but todays theories is the fact that the hat that the king had might have made the penetration hole bigger. But the idea of being shot from the left was also that one nobelman that was on the left with the swedish troops was the man that wiuld take over and become king if the king died. One thing that also puzzled the scientists is that the bullit didnt leave any fragment and also that they found one many years later with the kings DNA on it. One funny theory is that the bullit was made of silver from a button of the kings own uniform. The reason for that is that the king recused to die and belived so himself too and the only thing that could kill him was from something that he owned himself and of silver (like how you kill a vampyre). The theory the scientists have today is that it was a Norwegian bullit, but made of iron instead of lead. Hence the lack of fragment in the scull. It could also help with distance and so on from where the bullit might have been shot. I don’t know if we will get new facts. I think everyone has settled with that explanation.. but that is the reason for the lyric in this song :) today, I might add Sweden and. Norway are neighbours by occasion but brothers by choice. :)

@@kungsverige1886 That may be a reason, but I think Sweden at that point had all the experience for warfare, but the terrain, and the loss troops and a big part the fleet did an impact Sweden could not recover so easily from. The campaign to Norway seemed ill-considered at the time, even if it could secure a quick win and add fresh troops from Norway to the swedish forces. The campaign Armfeldt launched some years later, may be a revenge for Carolus' death, but it sure made swedish soldiers lie frozen dead in the trail.

The Swedish nation was tired of war, the people was starving and while he never started a war, he had a chance to end it long before this but he refused, he was so stubborn that in the end, it got him and alot of men killed. Dont get me wrong, I have alot of respect for him, he fought against so many, enemies attacked from all direction and he somehow managed to keep Sweden together, but after Poltava the Swedish nobles tried to make peace when he was living in turkey at the time, but he flat out refused because he felt that it was his duty to take back what was lost.
He was a great king, a great leader but there is a reason why alot of people think he was shot by his own.

Carolus Rex is a controversial historic figure. He lived and died among his soldiers, but as a ruler he failed in making peace causing lots of misery for his people.
In the end he was shot in the head late a November night at the siege of Fredriksborg in Norway.
The painting behind the lyrics is the famous painting depicting the king being carried back to Sweden. It also marks the end of the Swedish Empire.
Since Carolus Rex had no children or even a documented interest in girls, his death also marked the end of the Pfalz dynasty in the Swedish royal succession.

This song made me fall deep into the rabbit hole. The secret remaining unsolved is what peaked my interest in his history. It went so far as to see autopsy reports of his body, and newer findings. I believe a bell-button was found with genetic samples similar to ones of Carolus(some rare trait among Swedes that Charles XII had). And the button matches with the buttons of the Suit that Carolus wore in his final time. The bell-button was also of similar size to what the projected bullet would have been. The pictures of the wound shots are public and can be found easily since he was autopsied three times I believe.
The whole mystery was very intriguing to read. It went deep into backstabbing politics, inheritance of the throne, etc. There was dissent among the corrupt nobles about a tax reform he was about to pass(favoring the common men, and taxed the nobles heavily). In fact I believe Charles' right hand man for court politics etc was imprisoned and quickly executed. (He was the one who had proposed the tax reform and was spearheading the bill). Charles' cousin was a beneficiary for Charles' death. Since Carlous did not have kids and the next legitimate heir was Carolus' sister, he was the one to gain the most from Carolus' death. And did in fact inherit the throne after Carolus' death after a few months. In fact he was not even a good king. He squandered his power, reinstated old laws favoring the nobles, removed laws that Carolus had passed etc. It was hypothesized that he along with the corrupt nobles were accomplices in his "assassination".
Others speculate it was a soldier who was tired of war and death of his friends. On the other hand the place where Carolus was shot, could be seen from Fredrikshald lookout towers or other sniper placements. A lucky shot in the dark could have been possible and a safe, non-conspiracy explanation of his death, hence why it is easily accepted.
The final conclusion is something someone must come to their own after properly reading through the archives, testimonies, autopsy results etc. And it is upto everyone to have their own conclusion. Personally I feel he was assasinated since the side facing his troops had what looks like the entry wound of a bullet, and it was pretty common during those times for people to plot and scheme for the throne during times of war. It is a personal opinion. As such if someone wishes to think otherwise, they are free to. But all I am saying, is to make an educated decision, and to go through the "mystery documents" as I like to call them.
Hope this intrigues someone and clarified some points from the song. Have a great day!!

Aaaaa the batle of Fredriksten fortress... a battle that hold great significance in both norwegian and swedish history. In norwegian history because this victory and the death of Charles 12th/Karl 12th saved our country from swedish invasion and occupation (we were part of Danmark at the time, but a Swedish occupation at this point would have made our freedom much harder to win later, so without the death of Charles, Norway as a free country might not exist today), and swedish history because it marked the end of swedens empire and glory days as a European powerhouse. As the song states, we still dont know who shot him. It was the night before the battle and Charles was walking the trensches and inspecting the troopes. He wanted a better look so he jumped up from the trench to see better. It was picth dark except from a few torches in the fortress. Suddenly a single shot is heard and Charles falls back into the trench. When the soldiers catch him he is already dead. (Shot through the head if i remember correctly). The thing that gave way for the theory that he may have bin shot by his own was the curcomstances. The angle he was shot at was strange. Not to mention that it was pitch black and he was far enough away that a rifle from the time would have bin very inaccurat. For a norwegian soldier to make that shot in the dark, extreme luck was needed. And after losing the battle of Poltava (which you should do next btw) the king was getting less and less popular back home. The war was getting costly, both in money and men. What speaks against this theory is that even though some of the ruling class and common people in sweden had resentment towards the king, it is known that his military and commanders was extremly loyal. In the end, i as a norwegian would like to think one of our soldiers did it and saved our country, but as the song says: "300 years, still no one knows". In the end the battle never happened, as the swedish soldiers withdrew to bury and honour their fallen king.

If memory serves, the painting you can see faintly in the background was originally bought by Russian royalty/nobility, which people saw as insulting to Karl XII legacy so they raised money to commission the artist to make another one to be hung in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. After the Russian revolution the first painting made its way to Sweden, and was eventually donated to a museum in Gothenburg.

And the music is epic! Great reaction, once again!🤘 My suggestion for your next reaction would be "Poltava" and "Ruina Imperii" in that order. English version or Swedish, doesn't matter.
Btw, love your Christmas decorations in the background!☺️ Take care and stay safe!
