    Although I'm very thankful that Alberta Central keeps this beautiful locomotive operating, it is somewhat distressing to see her reined in at these slow speeds. I chased 6060 from London to Stratford, on to Toronto in May 1974. She was completely at ease at 100 kmph +.

    Bringing back sweet memories of going train watching with my late brother Ray. We watched her come through the Nelson Station in Burlington Ontario, when I was about 13, if memory serves. My brother got me into trains (He wore a long denim coat with TRAINMAN on the back), but my first love was steam.
    I am feeling sentimental today; I miss my brother, and it's my 58th birthday

    Brings back memories of when Essex terminal railway #9 was in Guelph doing excursions I was 3 when that excursion in Guelph Ontario happened

      Rode it from Hamilton to NF 3 times in the mid 70s and took the Alberta Prairie trip from Stettler to Coronation on Father’s Day 1999. Greg Scholl videoed much of our trip that day and has it on one of his videos.

    Amazing that behemoth can run on 60lb rail that used to be CN GMD1 A1A territory

      A lot of branch lines got upgraded in the early 80s to handle 90 ton hopper cars. Ones that weren’t upgraded were mostly abandoned.

    I saw the 6060 being overhauled at the CN Pointe St-Charles shops after Jasper, then rode behind it on railman trips in Quebec, then with UCRS out of Toronto. Got a great shot of her blasting out of a tunnel in BC (video here), then she double-headed to Jasper with the 2860 for the Great Steam Circle tour in October 1988, when I took a video of its arrival (very late) at Jasper, then the last doubleheader salute with the 2860 the next day and it all went downhill from there, as she never again ran on the CN mainline and hauled tourists on much too light a track.I think she’s sidelined now, the boiler is shot and it costs a fortune to fix. I live in Calgary, not too far from Stettler, in which area she is housed.If she ever runs again, let’s hope that they won’t dress it all with Canadian flags, US-style, the fake robberies are bad enough!

    little known fact a guy at the model railroad club im in who passed away, used to be the engineer for 6060 and even drove it up into collingwood were my club is located.

      Historymaker2001 shhhhiiiitttt. Only after it was retired was it " adorned" with Alberta s insignia. I say bring it home to where it was built. The 514

    to be honest steam isnt the same as it was during the steam days its nice to see them in action running but its just not the same i want to see them pull freight ect like in the glory days

      I think it's still in stettler doing this. Not sure though. I rode this train but we had bad luck. 6060 was down for repairs and a diesel pulled it instead

    The video is a great capsule in time, from 2003. While I don't like to be negative, there were at least two things that made me cringe, from a safety and operations perspective. These must NOT be done; these are amateur and potentially dangerous ops that the crew did in the video. First, never, never, EVER push on a switch throw arm like this trainman! Ever! That will land you face first in the ballast or rail with a broken nose or teeth. Second, contrary to Heritage Railway Regulations, the engine MUST stop 6-12 feet BEFORE coupling to the passenger train. Only then can the engine back slowly to a coupling. Yikes...this rings of amateur crew, which in itself is dangerous. I'm not even going to comment on the reverse move to Big Valley without anyone watching the point of the locomotive...the engineer sure can't see a danged thing and only has a mirror to assist, at best.
    Scary operation. What else do they do wrong?

      +trainman976 I agree - I also do not like to see crew riding on the front pilot when the locomotive is going forward.

      Here's something else they did wrong.
      25:08-25:38 Notice in this scene the grade crossing sequence he blows ends several seconds before he crosses over the road. According to the FRA (Not sure what it's called in Canada but they have the same rule), you are supposed to foul the crossing before ending the sequence.

      TSB - Transportation Safety Board. Yes AFAIK you have to hold the final whistle until the crossing is fully occupied in both current and Heritage operations. The engineer had recently retired from CN so I am very surprised that he made that mistake.

      I notice that they were very sloppy with handling her. She was wheel slipping a bit too much at her light speed.

      Most steam locomotives nowadays use oil, easier to access, cleaner, easier to fire, one tank lasts longer, etc,

      Also, a proper combustion emits little visible smoke. Sadly, engineers overload the fuel on purpose to make clouds of black smoke for photographs. My father was a steam engineer and this practice always annoyed him haha. He said it was a sign of bad combustion 3:51
