  • Antenna Modelling is a fun part of the hobby all by itself. Modelling your antenna and then understanding a far field plot - and how things might change is a lot easier than going out into the field and seeing for yourself - although I would encourage you to do both! How to use MMANA. Callum, DX Commander.

    Callum I learned about your UA-cam difficulties on QRZ and had to come here to look. I'm relieved to see you're here again, and I've re-subscribed. This kind of stuff is gold for all hams, and for me as a fairly new technician trying to build a shack up you're one of my best resources for learning. I hope you never stop and never slow down. God bless. KK7AWK

    I remember watching this when it aired . I've gained alot of knowledge from watching you Callum. Still think it's a shame about the original channel . Looking forward to your next video . Studying for the test ,hopefully be taking it soon 😀

    I like the way you differentiate between discovery and invention. My personal history has involved a lot of what I call "unintentional re-invention" in that I have come up with some really good ideas, only to find out that someone else has already put them on the market. Well, maybe that shows I've had some pretty good ideas. Anyway - thanks for all you do.
    BTW, I just came across a paper that uses the method of moments in determining relativistic hydrodynamic viscosity. How's that for getting a few steps past Herr Hertz?

    That's a great video, Callum. Is there any way in MMANA, when modelling a vertical, that I can see and calculate what happens if I omit a whole 180 Degrees of radial wires? Do I get any gain in the direction of the half radial bed, compared to the far-field signal strength of a complete 360 degree radial bed measured at the same far-field location?

    • @DXCommanderHQ
      @DXCommanderHQ  4 місяці тому +1

      What would happen is that you would get marginal losses where there are LESS radials and about the same where there ARE radials.. Maybe just add some more :)

    Thanks for demonstrating MMANA, I have been meaning to acquire antenna modeling software. I am a bit envious of how proficient you are with it thru experience, but maybe in time...
    As a bit of a sidenote & this is not at all a criticism and I can see why intuitively people gravitate to it, but you have to be careful that you don't use circular logic when attempting to show validity.
    For example, if I said, "I am present here" proves "I am present here."
    I have taken as true what is attempted to be shown true & I am using it to establish what I am trying to show as being true in a circular path.
    Likewise:
    If you take 1 stick & add it or combine it with 1 other stick you have a result. If you then say, because (1stick + 1stick = 2sticks is true because 1 + 1 = 2 is true) we then must have it follow that 1 + 1 = 2 is true.
    We have a circular argument was utilized much like my first example.
    The Natural numbers were really studied seriously in the late 1800's and a fella named Giuseppe Peano is given credit for essentially defining the Natural Numbers by establishing axioms that when taken as true give the Natural Numbers defining characteristics. No surprise the axioms are called the Peano Axioms.
    Using the Peano Axioms as a basis or platform to apply formal logic to, there are several ways of proving addition on the Natural Numbers with perhaps the easiest for those that don't spend hours a day studying Number Theory being proof by Induction.
    Out of the original 5 axioms some incredibly interesting results have appeared, but that is really too big of a topic to discuss here. On the other hand Number Theory while not easy is acessable to people who have just the skills provided by public school and can be as big a rabbit hole of interest to fall into as Amsteur radio, so by all means if intetested give it a go.

      I had no idea I was using circular logic.. Apologies.

    Hi Callum, I am having to do a station review before putting up a vertical antenna. I am in a drone no-fly zone since being approx 3/4 mile from airport. The FAA is asking me about antenna gain on the 18meter nebula. I am a new ham and still doing the hands on learning. Can you help me out with that data to make FAA happy. 73 KL5NU

    • @DXCommanderHQ

      Tell them gain is NO MORE than 1.2dBi at 20 degrees above horizon. At 5 degrees, it's -5dBi (yes, minus 5).

    i might be missing the point here but how can it be a dipole when there's only one piece of conductor? i speak as a person who sees antenna theory as a black art

    • @DXCommanderHQ
      @DXCommanderHQ  Рік тому

      The conductor is effectively "split" where the coax joins. You can't see it in the diagram - and actually you don't need to draw that, the maths assumes it. Good question.
