- Bells is a powerful choral setting of the spiritual "Rockin' Jerusalem." As the composer, I am attempting to repurpose the sounds of gunshots to become a rallying cry for justice. Following in the African American Spiritual choral tradition, the "bells" should imitate the sound of gunshots. The "bells" should be explosive, highly rhythmic, sharp, short, and sung with intention every time. They should not be treated as "background vocal." At the opening of the piece, "Oh, MAry" should be sung with full voice, with strength, great sorrow, and pleading. Much of the musical material is repeated. Each round goes higher and higher in intensity and intention. My hope is that the singer, listener, and audience member leaves with these bells continuously ringing in their hearts and souls so we collectively never forget his name. This choral setting is dedicated to the life and memory of Tamir Rice.
