I just want to ask if the part of the personal search you are speaking of refers to someone who wants to be a master of the art or to every single common student that just want to have a part time hobbie like tai chi..else the way you put it, a lifetime is not enough for someone to learn tai chi..wouldn't be better to find a good sifu who have access to the correct information and learn from him? Why do i have to spend a lifetime researching things that others already know from knowledge that has passed from master to student thousand years back? So, wouldn't be better to focus your research on a good sifu and if you want do your research on the art simultaneously?? Hi, Greece! lovely place. Your question is a good one. Let's start to think of CTMA as a normal university field of study... If so, will you have only one teacher for the rest of your life? Certainly not, you will follow schools and institutions, study groups, and many teachers and experts to have a compressive understanding of the matter. Chinese GongFu is a mix of many historically rooted beliefs and practices and is not a singular phenomenon. The learning process must be complete, don't get me wrong here, a student must learn only one system and in full. Is important to learn the whole spectrum, as much as possible, of the studies first of all to evaluate who is teaching you. Be critical of yourself and the choices you make, you have to choose one teacher but is that teacher legit or not? You will be the only one to check on that, your time is in your hands. This aside, to know GongFu is better to get into the Chinese culture and Chinese affairs as much as you can, is not just a system of self-defense, is much more than that, and to understand the particular perspective on Chinese things is better to know Chinese way of thinking, history, and culture (as much as we can). It will be impossible to know-it-all but trying it pushes us towards a better understanding rather than staying in a comfortable darkness of ignorance.
