LOL, brilliant. Love Buddy Holly and think his death was a great tragedy but somehow portraying him in this absurd alternative history as this egomaniac jerk is really hilarious. Of course Kevin's 'Rave On" delivery is perfect.
I love that they actually used a Beechcraft Bonanza, which was the same type of plane that they crashed in that night. They could have used any small plane for the skit and pretty much no one would know the difference but they actually went to the trouble of tracking down the real thing 😂 Little details like that is one of many reasons why this show was so amazing!
I know. My girlfriend's father has a Bonanza and every time we go flying, I say: "Oh no! A Buddy Holly plane!" By the way, this plane is still in production. The longest production of any airplane ever.
I'm honestly curious what specific parts they could try to censor other than the swearing. It's always going to be in bad taste (and also pretty funny)
They did that just because Kevin MacDonald looks so much like buddy holly with those glasses. Amazing. Amazing. They never re-ran this on Comedy Central in the mid 90s so I never saw it till now.
Kevin McDonald doesn't get the credit he deserves. He should be a bigger name and much more famous. In fact, all the Kids in the Hall should be more famous and appearing in a lot more stuff.
I agree. I was born in '88 and watched this with my dad. It felt like a fever dream until Lilo and Stitch came out. I heard Kevin McDonald's voice and couldn't remember where I recognized it from. A few years later, when internet searches became slightly more reliable and useful, I went down a Kids in the Hall rabbit hole. I remembered watching different sketch comedies with my dad but this one was different and unfortunately was lost to my knowledge. I watched every season multiple times when it was on Netflix during the early days of streaming.
He and the boys have a very off kilter sense of humor. Eccentric and esoteric, which breeds a loyal cult following but the masses will find this horrible but an SNL skit to be the cat's pajamas
The actual story of that night is pretty sad but I can’t stop laughing at this sketch. The idea that Buddy Holly was a bully and jackass to everyone is so funny.
A P When he found out that Waylon Jennings gave up his plane seat to The Big Bopper and would be taking the tour bus instead Buddy jokingly replied "Well I hope your bus freezes up" and Waylon jokingly replied "Well I hope your ol plane crashes" and those words haunted Waylon for the rest of his life.
@@godaithelesser4292 - It's not good writing and it's quite mean spirited. You can have a mix but this one leaned to hard on 'angry' humor, which is probably why it wasn't originally released, I just found out.
Waylon Jennings was the luggage carrier displaced that night. My parents listened to the Big Bopper radio show late at night when his Beaumont station went full power at night to broadcast to East Texas and Louisiana.
The whole reason why this sketch is hilarious is because every knows Buddy Holly never acted like this and would never act like this. I think it's more a parody of other rock star dumb asses who through their life and career down the toilet with their own free will. Thats why it's meant to be funny because Buddy was not like that AT ALL. It's a joke about his actual character and talent.

Hey, in the censored version of this, some people were saying that was paul bellini as ritchie valens. But I thought he NEVER spoke in any sketches until the end of the final sketch of the final episode. Kind of like a harpo gimmick. Wonder if buddy holly's relatives ever tried to sue kevin over this. Lol!
There is a sketch (Season 2, Episode 15) where Scott decides he is no longer gay. At the end of the sketch I am pretty sure Bellini lifts his head out of Scott's lap and says something about still having sex with him. If you didn't know, Scott and Bellini were writing partners.
Every single KITH video has people in the comments claiming "they could never get away with this today" even though literally nobody said they were offended, but somehow THIS is the one that actually offends people?? I guess it's not millennials or liberals who can't take a joke these days, it's Buddy Holly fans.
i cannot even effing describe to you how much i love this sketch! Thank you and awesome job posting it. The other versions of it i saw posted were either really shitty quality, censored or both.
Watching this on UA-cam, you know from the beginning that the sketch is about Buddy Holly and this ruins much of the joke, of course. Watching this on TV all those years ago, I can say that the moment when he puts his glasses on was a big surprise.
Ritchie Valens was portrayed by Paul Bellini, a writer on Kids on the Hall. Bellini sporadically appeared in sketches or between sketches dressed only in a towel. That became "his thing" on the series. They had a parody contest "Eat with Bellini" where a contestant could win dinner with Bellini and eat fish with him! Fish was his favorite meal... : ) This is only 1 of 2 times on KITH TV series where I can recall Bellini actually spoke. He also spoke the last bit of dialogue on the last episode of KITH. He walked over the "grave site" of the Kids and said something to the effect, "Oh, thank god it's over. I thought it would never end!" Big Bopper was played by "unknown" but definitely voiced by Dave Foley.
Thought the sketch was hilarious. Hope Holly's family has a sense of humor but I thought it was inspired to have Buddy Holly portrayed as an alcoholic asshole with delusions of grandeur. This is a bit like the sketch, "Whatever," where the lead character (played by Dave Foley) finally gets in over his head and believes his hype too much. I don't want to give away the sketch's ending to anybody who's never seen it (or doesn't remember it like I iniitally did) but that was inspired, too! Talk about being too big for your britches and having that come back to bite you in the ass! As politically incorrect as it was, it was also funny to hear Holly be a loudmouth racist to Ritchie Valens (played by one of the KITH's regular writers) and the Big Bopper (foul-smelling fat ass!) I don't know if they could do this sketch today... You have to be part of the "establishment" to get anything on TV now. So damn safe and condescending... and SNL is very much part of that group... Has been for at least 15 years now. Too bad seeing that Lorne Michaels (SNL executive producer) also executive produced the Kids in the Hall during its 5-year-run. KITH is timeless...
