  • After what feels like a decade away from pike, due mostly to weather conditions and with a bit of family and holiday sprinklings on top I hit the river Severn. After all the rain we have had in the last 48hrs and with temperatures dropping I thought it a good time to try. It wasn’t a game of numbers but I was definitely happy with the session 👍

Good to see an old school spinner can pick up so many perch! They were absolutely hammering that thing.

Cheers Vincent, a lovely time of the day. I’ve often thought of recording like an ASMR style video. Like you I often fish places where all you can here is Mother Nature 👌

    Hi Steve
New to pike fishing just got a small perch rod atm 1-7 gram which I’ve had a lots of perch and a few jacks on.
Wanted to go a size up and get a 10-30 gram rod but not sure what reel size to match it with up with 2500-3000 or 4000?
Think my perch rod has a small 1000 reel on it.
Also what line/braid would you use for that reel?
Hope you don’t mind the question, don’t know any predator anglers to ask
    All the best

Hiya, no worries. For a next stage up I’d probably go 10 or 15-40g as that would probably cast most mid range pike lures. 40-60lb braid for snag retrieval more than anything. I use an Abu Garcia 9ft 10-45g rod with a Diawa ninja 4000 reel and 60lb braid

Do you by any chance have some experience using barbless treble hooks? I've been using barbless single hooks for soft (rubber) bait for quite some time and it's been working like a charm, especially weedless hooks (if fish gets hooked properly, it stays on, and unhooking fish ia a lot easier and I think it keeps them in better health ), but I don't really know if going barbless will not lower my fish-landed ratio significantly if using spinner/twitch/crankbaits etc. I've heard some pretty conflicting opinions.

Hiya mate, unfortunately I do not. However a lot of subscribers do and often tell me how they don’t loose too many

Good watch! Do you crush the barbs when lure fishing?

@@BlackCountryPiker Thanks for the reply! You must be a pro, you make unhooking look so easy.Caught our first Pike on Tuesday night; hooked in the gill plate area. Really struggled to unhook so thought barbless might be the way to go or to at least crush them. Thankfully, after a long rest in the water, it swam off so fingers crossed it was OK.

@@yoyo895 - crushing the barbs does make unhooking pike easier. I’ve had one crush a small jerk bait and was far easier and quicker to cut the hook.
So some long wire cutters are recommended. Cheap on eBay 👍

@@yoyo895 Your most welcome 👍 At some point everyone comes across an awkward unhooking. Without doubt barbless or even semi barbed would be easier to remove. That said there’s always the really awkward ones where you will need a little patience, delicate approach and the right tools. Going in through the gill plate can be daunting but with long pliers wire cutters everything can normally be removed. Glad to hear that the fish swam away after a good rest 👍

@@leftmono1016 Thanks for the tip. When you say cut the hook, do you mean cut it and leave it in and let the fish go? Or just to seperate the hook and lure and then go to work on the remianing hook that's stuck?
