Not often do we get to tell the stories behind success but today, we sit with two young men who set out to change the game not just in sports but with their entrepreneurial skills too. Earl Cooper and Olajuwon Ajanaku, two minority business owners share their unique journey from humble beginnings to stardom and success.
Earl, a PGA professional and O, the founder of East Side Golf, sit with Fred, Ryan and Channing sharing the back story on how the duo got involved in the sport of Golf, a predominantly white sport, and infiltrated the industry, changing the culture and impacting fashion along the way. Coming from a HBCU background, O used his education and business skills applying it to his passion to carve out a niche in the gold industry. Catching the attention of stars like Michael Jordan, Chris Paul, Tiger Woods, Fat Joe and many others, their style and ideas for fashion have created a buzz not just in golf but in all walks of sports and entertainment fashion.
On the heels of their recent Hulu docu-series Grails, the two young entrepreurs are sharing the journey of how turning an idea into a business has not only set out to change the world of golf but also made a cultural impact. The conversation is guided by the story of East Side Golf and its quest break into the world of sports fashion and sneaker culture but also it stories the journey of how a two young men go from humble beginnings to landing a deal with the top brand in the industry.
The conversation is filled with bits of humor and wisdom as the guys open up to Fred, Channing and Ryan about the process, the obstacles and the feeling of finally "making it" after so much of the blood sweat and tears is poured into their passion. Sharing personal conversations and moments they have had with big names along the way who not only have inspired them but supported turning the dream into a reality.

As a 50+ y.o black man that started playing at 23, I studied the history of the game in the US as a part of my learning how to play. In my opinion, TV and the PGA is the reason why golf presents itself as not being cool to people of color. There are TONS of black people that play golf on a TON of levels all across the US. We've had pros that were better than Tour pros before we were 'allowed' to play the game! This gets ignored all the time. As long as the sports media and PGA keeps making it seem like we don't care outside of the non-professional level, then we won't pay attention. We've been IN golf the whole time. Tiger just won enough to make it a story. But when he'd talk about the REAL door openers (Peete, Sifford, etc) before him, it would get quickly dismissed.

Thanks so much Pivot for this episode...it brought tears🥺and laughter ☺️because my oldest Son's father taught me how to play golf in 1989, but I stopped playing@5 months pregnant with our Son. The tears comes from seeing these young men doing what I felt like my boyfriend would have been, if it wasn't for some ignorant person that didn't value life had not taken him from us@ the age of 23. He was so passionate about the game to the point that the older guys took to him, saw his potential and helped him get a scholarship to Mississippi Valley State, but unfortunately he didn't stay because of the conditions of the school. He played so much that it inspired his friends in the neighborhood to learn how to play. I learned because it intrigued me as well as allowed me to spend quality time with him, because we didn't spend alot of time in the day time together. He played until dark on a daily after work he's there by 7:30am... he competed and won in several tournaments. We lived in Chicago and just like the youngman stated on the show there are parks(South Shore Culture Center and Jackson Pk)that allowed us to play for free. If he didn't have the money me and some of the guys would put some money together so a couple of them that wanted to play in the tournament would put more money together could compete. I was the only female, but that's me I love most sports, so I'm usually that girl. Unfortunately to this day, I have not been able to pick up another club, because of the emotional reminder. Our son eventually began playing in the same parks and was progressing pretty well, but unfortunately I couldn't give him the privilege to continue, because as a single mom I had to move in areas didn't keep him access to play the same as the area where we were originally living. He could have been successful as well, but unfortunately we weren't privee to the same resources.
I will definitely be supporting those young men. Thanks again🫶🏾

I like how your guests are ranging from athletes, entertainers, to entrepreneurs. I checked out they're website, and I noticed that they're collaborating with The NBA and The MLB. Now, that's a power move. Big ups to Pivot, and the brothers from Eastside Golf.

I appreciate you guys so much, I look up to you each individually as well as a unit. What you guys are doing is phenomenal. I watch each episode every week faithfully and always leave with more knowledge and exposure to things that I may have not come across had it not been for your show. Inky Johnson and Eastside Golf in particular. I recently moved from Prince George’s County Maryland down to Fort Myers Florida one year ago and one of the things that I have noticed since being here is that the golf scene here is immense. I have always heard that some of the most important business deals are handled on the golf course which has stuck with me. I myself have never played on an official golf course but I have a 2 year old son that I definitely want to be exposed to golf at a young age. This brand is very inspirational and I appreciate The Pivot and Eastside Golf. Keep up the good work.

Didn’t play golf really til grad school…conversations like these on platforms that reach across multiple cultures are vital. I think Will Lowery and Doug Smith would be phenomenal guest to have on as well in the future as they’re pushing diversity in the golf landscape from a podcast perspective. Almost like Stuart Scott did with ESPN. They’re kicking it to us with our flavor… the culture is definitely behind the movement.

We have to keep in mind like most professional sports and college sports blacks were not allowed and all had “black code” to how many could participate, or not even play. PGA had a clause saying for Caucasian males only. The masters didn’t allow a black Americans to play until 1975 which is only like 48 years ago. PGA don’t won’t blacks but they only open that door for a “certain type of black”... Going to be interesting to see how the pga accepts the brand.... being tolerated is one thing, and being accepted is another keep that in mind.... great interview!

Great interview, but I'm not buying a $50 t-shirt...much less an $85 polo.. Is it not logical to cut prices in half? I understand a costly golf shoe, but an expensive, basic t-shirt with a logo just makes no sense...regardless of the brand..

Phenomenal. ✨ How about featuring the sport of springboard and platform diving? Nothing like seeing a brown body on the diving board or 10 meter platform. I know a couple 😉 one is now a doctor.
