Jimmy Buffett-A Pirate Looks At Forty
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all
Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam
And in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen
Most of 'em dream, most of 'em dream
Yes I am a pirate, two hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late
I've done a bit of smugglin', I've run my share of grass
I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast
Never meant to last, never meant to last
And I have been drunk now for over two weeks
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks
But I got stop wishin', got to go fishin'
Down to rock bottom again
Just a few friends, just a few friends
(instrumental)
I go for younger women, lived with several awhile
Though I ran 'em away, they'd come back one day
Still could manage to smile
Just takes a while, just takes a while
Mother, mother ocean, after all the years I've found
My occupational hazard being my occupation's just not around
I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown
My wife loved this song, we lost her three weeks ago today. I loved watching her listen to it and dance, she is greatly missed and loved keep listening honey..
Sorry about your wife brother, Jimmy putting on a show for her today ❤😭 love you
RIP Jimmy Buffet your legacy will live on through your music.

MY FAVORITE SONG BY THIS LEGEND MAY YOU REST IN PEACE 🙏🏼😔
Three Oceans, four major seas, countless minor one, over 100,000 nautical miles on 7 different US aircraft carriers. Long now retired. Sure do miss it. Jimmy's songs brings me back to that time in my life that I truly loved and sadly I'll will never see again. My dream in the days remaining is to go back to Key West and live there. God I miss the ocean. I'm over 50 victim of fate. Thanks Jimmy for the memories.
RiP Jimmy. Thank you for your life's work. It will forever be appreciated!
Two things about this song.
1) When I used to work in a bar/restaurant here in town back in the 1980's, we, (the staff) would sing this song all of the time. At one point all bartenders, waitstaff and kitchen were singing this in perfect harmony. The customer's loved it!
2) Jimmy Buffett was one of my Dad's favorite entertainers and this was one of his favorite songs. My Dad passed away in 2009 and I feel sadden each time I hear this song, yet I still love to listen to it.
Lastly, I was lucky enough to actually meet Jimmy Buffett, (and his parents) many years ago. I can't speak for now but back then he was a very down-to-Earth friendly sort of guy, (his parents were equally as friendly.) I am hoped he and they still are.
I grew up in Key West and caught young Jimmy strumming a new tune called Margaritaville on the seawall at Louie's Backyard...
@@GotScout holy shit! I wish I could have seen him
My late husband's favorite song. He was a born and raised sailor!! Lost him in 2015!! I miss him so much!!! Michael Nunery born by the ocean and died by the ocean!!!
My dad used to sing me to sleep with this song when I was a baby, it's always been special to me but so much more since his passing last year
I sing it to my babies now. I hope they do the same.
I don't care how many decades pass, I was a pirate before I hit 40. Looking back, yeah, Jimmy got it
This was my grandfather's favorite song. Man I miss him.
Listening to this on my parents reel to reel was the best.. I'm pushing 40 and had the privilege to live in the islands in my 20s but back in the midwest... jimmy will never leave my soul 🤙🤙🤙🍺
If you miss him why don't you just call him?
The old man had great taste in music. Rest his soul. God willing, my ashes will be spread behind my house in the Gulf!

I quit my job at 40...left Europe for Mexico...was supposed to be a short vacation but never went back home! I've turned 60 and first heard this song few month ago covered by Jack Johnson...the story of us pirates! Bless you Jimmy!
Pietro Malinverni your a liar
Cool
@@michaellange401 I smell envy
@@michaellange401 what part of his claims are too extraordinary for you to believe? I would agree with you if he said something extraordinary like if he could heal someone just be touching them. But he didn't make any extraordinary claims. People moving to other countries is a common occurrence and thus rather mundane. You on the other hand, seem to call this individual a liar WITHOUT evidence. So which one of you is actually being dishonest? Seems obvious to me.
livin the dream ....... good job
RIP Jimmy you affected so many lives 🎉🥲🥹
Mr Buffet,
I’m a country boy from Virginia & you influenced my life so much in 1985- to this day. I had an injury in college that caused me to stop playing football & I had life changing choices to make. I chased a dream & it came true. I’ve traveled the world, watched sunsets & sun rises over all the oceans. I became a fisherman & lived a life that millionaires work their entire lives to see once in a while & I got paid to do it everyday. Now I’m entering the twilight of my career & I’ll be writing books about what I’ve seen & experienced & you were there the whole time. Thank you for my fairytale life that many dream of, but few take the jump to achieve it.
Capt Rich
Glad you got to experience all that. :)
Now that's a great way to have started something like you said, some wait there whole lifetime to experience what you have.👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘😎😎😎
I'm from VA too. Enjoyed your well-written comment. I feel the same STOKE from my life as a surfer. The Spirit and Blessings of Mother Ocean is a Birthright. From one VA boy to another, CHEERS!
Another pirate named Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard infamously haunted The Graveyard of the Atlantic off the coast of the Outer Banks. Always be on the lookout for Teach's Light above Little Dismal Swamp. Should you be lead by the spectre to the spot, beware that you shall meet and must split the treasure with the devil.
Touche very well said very well done and you are right more should go after the surgery and I have been trying but a lot stands in my way but someday I will get there I hope. PS I love buffets you I never stopped singing this song and I'm Aquarius sign of water although I never got to meet him or attend a concert because they're always sold out before I'm fortunate to get a ticket but on my bucket list maybe someday 🙏☘️❤️😀😘
Jimmy Buffet's a fucking genius. No one else could sing something like this
I love the enthusiasm

My husband passed 1/17 this was one of the songs he requested I play at his funeral. So we put his favorite Harley at the front of chapel and played jimmy buffett and bob segar with his ashes setting on the Harley seat. Just the way he wanted.
Hell yeah. Two of the best music makers in the world.
My condolences to you... i bet theri wasn't a dry eye in the house. I'm sure Buffet would be honored
sorry for your loss but y'all had good Times
Cool
This is UA-cam not a therapist
Today is my 40th birthday and I am starting my day out with this song and a bowl of gumbo.
When my dad was looking at forty I didn’t know what a pirate or a parrothead is but now I AM parrothead looking at forty myself. I’m so happy to have a dad that introduced me to Jimmy Buffett when I found out what music is and to remember his great songs enough to wake up with them stuck in my head and want to find them on UA-cam by title. I love my dad, I love Jimmy.
Lost my Father on Sunday. These are the memories. Love you dad
As a 15 year old his songs make me feel like I’m missing something that I don’t know I’m missing. The meaning and impact makes me feel so at peace and I cry every time I listen to his songs alone. There is just so much energy and belief in his words and stories. I want to die listening to his songs while sitting at in the sand at a beach.
Chris Marston
This song made me feel that way when I was 15 too. Now I am actually looking at 40 and it hits even harder. I hope you do lots of amazing things in your life.
No sweetie. You need to live listening to his songs on the beach.
Thank God we (artist and audience) have been granted the opportunity to grow old(er) and hear this music for many years. Long live the music of our era, the world is still in love with it. 59 yrs old and still listening to music from those magic years. Would love to see this kind of music being created again before I die. It never, EVER, gets old, and it’s not going to die anytime soon. You can still hear it....EVERYWHERE! In commercials, movies, shows, etc. It’s still very much alive. I hope I fade before it does. Been loving it since around 1968. Nostalgia is bittersweet.
Yes I am a pirate. Two hundred years to late. The cannons don't thunder. There's nothing to plunder. I'm an over forty victim of fate. Sweet Jesus. Absolute masterpiece.
Couldn't have said it better
I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast
Watch the men who rode you switch from sails to steam..
Can relate
I'm an over 40 victim of fate
I remember being 3ft tall listening to this with my dad roadtripping from pa to the Carolinas. Good memories. Rip Jimmy

I am a pirate over 40
Took a year off and sailed the carribean on a 38ft sail boat.... Loved this song so many things that fit my life..... See on the water.........
Still my favorite Buffett tune after 40 years.
My husband and myself lived in St
Croix for a while. We had the time of our lives. My husband passed away 2-13-22 I miss him so much I ache inside my heart is broken. Thanks my Ole Freind 3:46
Since my son was a baby, id hold him in my arms on the beaches of the Jersey Shore singing this song. He's 16 now, and I still sing it to him. Mother Ocean we love you
Damn my dad raised me on this 18 years ago. It's hard to believe i'm 21 now. I love you dad...
Now you’re 30 😬...same dad gave me this album as my first CD when I was like 8 in 95...gettin old slowly but surely
This song has been the sound track of my life. Round the world in boats and ships, Jimmy Buffett has been with me all the way.
My husband favorite song. Toasting him today 11 years with out my sailor yes I’m younger and yes several wives. How I miss him
#RIP #JimmyBuffett thank you for the decades of music and concerts.🌊⛵🦜🌌🕯️💔
My old man was a modern day pierrot 200 years to late ,a drunken sailor for 30 years in the Navy a yellow shirt and he loved every minute of it I miss the sob
Navy man here too and I love this song. Love the ocean and the islands!!!WhenI die I want my family to dump my ashes in the Southern Cribean
My dad died 5 years ago of a brain tumor, and this song was one of the ones picked out to be played at the funeral. Even now listening to it 5 years later, I'm bawling with grief from what happened. I know how you feel and I just want to say this: please dont try to stay strong for anyone. You do what you need to do in order to get by, but dont try to forget. It's going to hurt for a long time, but please don't forget. It does get easier with time. My heart goes out to you and your family,
Now jimmy left us today ... so sad
I'm very surprised this song and poem never garnered a Grammy, or some gilded Nobel Prize in Literature, it's beautifully written, and gloriously sung! Plaudits Jimmy Buffet!
So many similarities to Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poem “Miniver Cheevy."
AMEN !!!
Jimmy Buffett for president !!!
If anyone remembers me knows this fits to a tee. Sorry but keep truckin is how I was raised.
"Take it all in it's as big as it seems, count all your blessings and remember your dreams..." - Jimmy Buffet
Jimmy Buffett is a treasure because he is introspective and humble. He is honest and timeless. One of the greats.
My mom used to love Jimmy Buffett. She died back in December of 2018. I feel terrible because I never really listened to him until after she died. I miss her so much and I wish we could just go back and listen to this stuff all day. I can almost hear her singing the lyrics all over again... it feels too real man. I'm gonna finish high school next year and do my best for her to try and make it up. I love you mom and I'm glad you don't have to suffer anymore.
Noth8ng to feel bad about..you got here in the end ..with her help...she loved you and still does..
My friend posted this & said him & my late hubby of 16 yrs (our 20’s-40’s together) used to play this song b4 fishing. It means a lot to me he shared this w/ me. Living in FL we r blessed to have got to see Jimmy live many times over the years!! If yr a Floridian u would get it - there is a special place in our hearts for Jimmy!!! 🙏🏽🩵🤍
I remember listening to this song when I was about sixteen. I’ll be 40 this year, and this song makes perfect sense now. My how the time flies
RIP Jimmy 💔 your spirit will never die ❤🎶🥀🕊️🕯️🙏 and may you always have fair winds and following seas 💨🌬️🌊🌪️
It is super sweet how Jimmy sounds so pure. it's super sad to me because personalities like this die every day. Still free pure people are far far away from the internet, may God bless us all, much much love

Out back with my 3 year old boy and this song came on. Man, I hope he carries on his dads appreciation for good music. Something tells me he will.
Me and my grandpa used to listen to Jimmy Buffett all the time together. He passed away in 2021. I still listen to the CDs every day, he definitely influenced my taste of music.
Buffet's best song; Step Father was great friends with him before he passed and this was his top Buffet song. RIP Cool.
The song my daughter chose for the father - daughter dance at her wedding :) Love it.
What do you know. I never noticed this before. But as I listened to this song, I knew I heard the very distinct middle-class Mississippi coastal accent (we call them coast rats). And sure enough, he's from Pascagoula, MS. I went to college in Mississippi, all my family is from there, Ive been a lifelong Buffett fan...how did I not know this? You hear that accent enough, it's unmistakable. Very cool to learn. We love you, Jimmy.
I still visit here on every Christmas, thanks Jimmy Buffett, you’re still very close to my heart, great song!
I miss my husband when I hear this song, Margaritaville & Son of A Sailor...we went to the Keys twice & were married on Islamorada in 2002. He died of Cancer at age 50 in 2015 & I still don’t know how to go on. Maybe I’ll move to the Keys & live out my days there with my daughter.🏖🏝☀️🌊🚤🍃🌺🍃

I used to sit and get plastered to this at 21 when in college at Ball State. Now I'm over 40, 43 to be exact, and it still is a lonely song. It was lonely then and I was 21, weird how it touched me the same then and now.
I used to get plastered to his music when I was 18-23 and 28‐now. I'm 62 now and still love doing it!
Used to fall asleep to this song as a kid whenever we went out on the water. Good times.
my husband was the same age as Jimmy. He had the mustache & everywhere we went people would do a double take.Blonde & tan, same smile. Joe left for his permanent ocean voyage and I can finally listen to Buffett's music without crying as much. I'd give my pirates treasure to walk with Joe Ruotsi down the Sandy beach with the sun and wind at our backs ! Hug your pirate every day because you never know when he'll be called out to sea to ride the waves for good... I LOVE YOU JOE RUOTSI. !!
And THANKYOU Jimmy for sharing years of your Nautical Happiness and memories!!

RIP Sailor ! Thanx for all the great music & Books ; Sail on Brother ! xo
I did it. Last year, before I was 60 and still young enough to have fun I packed up, followed the instructions, "I put a beer in my mouth and hit 95 south, I was headed for the keys." Made it to the keys but lost track of the brake peddle and now I live on a tropical island in the middle of the Caribbean. He was right. I'm a tropical man, I'm happy as hell and it shows.
❤👍
where do you get your funds for the beer now?
I used to haul horses all over the US. Started every trip with this song. A petite red head battling the endless road, 40' trailer and 6 restless horses. Good times. Always a laugh when the big rig drivers asked "Little lady, are you driving that rig?" Yes sir!
The restless spirit of all gypsies... Mother, Mother ocean...
Born in the wrong age: either your time has passed, or it hasn't begun yet. How many of us feel this way?!
I'm 60 now. I looked far and away. I started at the place I am now. I guess I seen a few things here and there. Guess I lost a few years staying drunk and chasing whores. It ain't that damn romantic. Find something you love and stick with it. I sit on the porch, drink coffee in the morning, drink a little booze at night. The sun sets the same all over the world. It don't matter wher you been or what you done. It's where you are.
Deep shit, hopefully it hasn't begun yet
WHAT??
You have to live in your own time.
Gotta agree with you, I am now irrelevant. The time goes so quickly. “Youths a mask but it don’t last, live it long and live it fast”. I can relate to this song. Make some memories cause when your times past that’s all you’ll have.
About two days ago, my grandparents held their yearly charity gathering. Someone decided that they would play some live music. They played this and we all toasted to jimmy buffet.
Hope hes up there swimming and looking down at us
My father's favorite song as well. I miss you, Dad.
Rokenroleg I wish I could tell you that you will get over your Dad being gone after awhile. But unfortunately, I can not. My Dad passed in 1993 of a heart attack and I still miss him every day. What a man he was. So lucky to have him as my Dad.
Mee too
And I, You...
Jimmy you've done so much for freedom lovers and independence especially

This is about a guy who's first love was the ocean and instead of pursuing life on the high seas he pursued a career elsewhere but never let go of his passion
I'll never forget the first time I heard this song and jimmy on a small boat in the Caribbean .......the perfect place to here this song,I will never forget that perfect day .thanks Mr buffet.xx
I turned 40 when this came out. o what a life it's been goin on.
You know how these songs mean more & more the older you get
I saw Jimmy the first time in 1979 when he opened for the Eagles at The Swamp in Gainesville, Fl. I was hooked and thirty five some odd concerts later, it is always an experience. God bless you Jimmy!
Stephen McBee Same story ~ first saw him playing the Cellar Door in Georgetown with Roger Bartlett in '74 I think. Thirty-somethin' time last week in Tampa.
Stephen McBee ..I went with my dad when I was 23 years old...to be his designated driver...jimmy put on the best show giving away free margaritas , needless to say we took a cab home that night but I was forever a parrot head since that night! Love him.
I was there in 79!!!

Idk if this was my dads absolute favorite, but I really like it and he and I used to listen to a lot of jimmy buffet together. I’m sitting in his boat right now, not on the water yet unfortunately. But we will get back out there soon. I love seeing all of us that have this in common in this comment. It’s really moving
I played this album/cd (one of my many) constantly when my daughter was small. She used to sing along with his music when we were on car trips. She was 3.
Great comments - this music definitely touches people in places that stir up a lot of memories while putting the mind at ease. Almost a magical experience. Most everyone can relate to his songs.
A dear friend of mine is very very sick. This is his favorite song. Love you Charley.
Every single song of Jimmy's is amazing. My parents introduced me to him 35 years ago, and I've loved him sesne. Going to see him in concert very soon.
A tribute to the real legendary pirates of the 20th century. And their demise.
This will be played when my trip around the sun ends
Im seeing alot of people who have lost a husband or father and this was their favorite song, and in some way it has become a favorite of yourself if it wasn't you wouldn't be here listening! It was and is a song that my father loves i am 32 now but as a younggin i didn't want to hear this stuff! But from 17 and on wow has that changed i absolutely love it and we enjoy it together every now and then over a beer. Dad always said one day you will understand son and WOW was he right I love ya pop. Thank you for everything!
A1A is without doubt Jimmy's most melodic album. Many people rate this song as his best ever, even better than "He went to Paris" and "Death of an unpopular poet". Either way I've lived for for years with Jimmy's music and brought up my two kids to the sounds of the first seven albums, either at home or in the back seat of various cars as we traveled round Australia....
R.I.P. old man. You weren't a pirate but you should have been. Thanks for making me a pirate too.
