Walter Crane along with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott are considered the three great British illustrators to transform children’s book illustration and firmly establish the concept of the picture book. Caldecott tends to be the most well known since he came to Florida for health reasons, but unfortunately died and was buried there. The American Library Association decided to name their illustration award after him in the 1930s and it was the first and most well known of its kind.
