As bad as they say? - Escape from Monkey Island

- Press like to question the implausible and daunting prospect of Monkey Kombat. Why are we fighting? What do we gain? Do we hate our fellow monkeys to the point we feel nothing when we harm them? When will we stop and realise just what this is - entertainment for the man, who cares nothing about the wellfare or plight of our Monkey Friends. It's disgusting. At what point did we trade in our dignity for Oop Aak Eeks and Chees. It's sad. Really sad.

When people complain about the 3D in EMI I don't think they're comparing it to other 3D games of the time, they're complaining about the choice to make the game 3D at all.
Absolutely! I think the change to 3D is jarring compared to the previous visuals. I think Escape isn't as bad looking on the basis of a 3D game at the time, but compared to the previous games, it unfortunately doesn't hold up.
Have you ever seen other 3D games of the year 2000? The 3D graphics were already far beyond that. Actually the models of MI4 are low-polygonal like a 3D game of 1996-1997 and don't match with the detailed painted backgrounds.
Early 3D really didn't age well aesthetically. But maybe for a public which at the time had spent years looking at pixel then cartoon sprites, it was amazing. It wouldn't have been obvious then that this new type of graphics wouldn't age nearly as well as its predecessors.
This game really said: yeah pirate adventures are great and all, but you know whats really fun? Gentrification
The game had its faults. However, the music and voice acting were the best of the original series.
Everyone killed it! Still strange to hear Elaine become briefly American though. (But still good!)
Another issue with Guybrush’s characterisation in this game is that he’s much, much stupider here then he is in other entries in the series!
He's been running into too many walls in this game.
I enjoyed it quite a lot apart from Monkey Combat. That was a drag.
Agree. I enjoy it and it´s relaxing. And still LucasArts.
It may be the weakest in the series but far from bad. There are games that are far worse.
Hey! Great video. A small comment which might help you next time (if you ever play through this again) - you don't need to beat "a certain number of monkeys" in order to fight Jojo. You just need to beat 1 - the brawny monkey. You can exit out from each monkey searching for the brawny one. Beat him, and Jojo will fight you. If he's not showing up, beat the smelly monkey and brawny will show up just after. This way, you can be really quick, and only face Jojo after 2 other fights :)
Hey thanks for watching! I'm glad you liked it! Also big love to you for sharing that! I wasn't too sure, but I'll keep that in mind on my next playthrough (and there WILL be another!)
Nicely balanced video Noir! You’re right, the controls are absolutely infuriating! 😂 Having said that, they are SO much better on the PS2 version, using the analog sticks and the d-pad arrows to select speech options etc. The Toothrot stuff makes sense when you find out the whole story, but this game doesn’t give you the full picture, you sort of have to do some research for yourself to work it all out! It’s not the best Monkey Island game, but it’s a pretty good adventure game. Also, it had 3 pretty exceptional games before it which was always going to make it very difficult to match up! 😊
Escape from monkey island is a solid 7/10 in my book, sure its the weakest of the four original games but that doesnt make it bad at all. The humor is funny, Graphics are quite good for its time, Voice acting is solid. The controlls is the main problem with the game i say, but if you can look past that there is no reason not to play the game.
Actually fun game for me. CMI is the best but this probably comes close second for me
Better than the first two games? That's heresy!
I enjoyed this video a lot ! Glad I got my 5-seconds cameo lol. You put a bunch of effort into this, I liked watching from start to finish !
Something I realized about Escape From Monkey Island is that it sometimes goes against some of the points made in Ron Gilbert's "Why Adventure Games Suck".
For example, the names puzzle to get the skin can be considered as a backwards puzzle since you can find the names in the manhole cover way before you can even meet Pete.
While in previous games there were puzzles where the solution was somewhat given to you way before the problem (such as with the Monkey 2 bone puzzle), you still had to think it out even when you eventually reach the problem (such as finding a connection between the song lyrics and the bone doors).
However, for the names puzzle, you're immesiatly given the names you need to tell Pete about, so the player can't make a connection between the two since it's already been given ; this means the puzzle basically solved itself while the player only gets to interact around it.
With that said, I still had my fair share of fun with Escape ! I agree that it isn't a bad game and that it's just weaker than the previous entries, I think it's partly because it sometimes goes against Ron Gibert's adventure game design and likes to ignore or repeat things which happened in the previous games.
It can be infuriating compared to the previous games, but I think it works fairly well as its own separate entry.
The thing that never worked for me with Monkey 4 was the tone it's hard to explain but the vibe is decidedly off. Monkey Island always played a bit absurdist but this one went too far or in the wrong direction with it. watching this video I think the best way I can describe it is that it's a Monkey Island game that's trying, tonally, to be a Sam and Max game. and those are two great tastes that don't belong in the same dish.
I love Monkey Island series so much, I've attempted to like this game numerous times. I'd like to prove myself wrong, one day.
I forgot so much of this game. Maybe i should give it another play through. Outstanding video mate, love your review style. Subbed 👍
Definitely worth going back! Thanks for watching! It means a lot!
2:45 Oh god! It's Voldemort!
Huh, you can make one of the parrots drunk? I always gave one of them coffee!
.... I had no idea you could do that. Someone call the RSPCA on me because I think feeding them grog might be cruelty.
As Monkey Island 4's Biggest Fan (its the best bad game ever in my opinion) i really appreciate any review that doesnt just... break it down to "haha graphic bad and tank"
Thanks for watching! As much as there's areas that I'm critical, I genuinely love Escape a lot!
@@NoirReservoir And one thing to the JoJoJr fight (rip JoJo Sr.). As somebody who speedran this game (on the buggy version thats prone to crashes in monkey combat xdxd) i can 100% confirm that JoJo plays 100% Perfectly, until its 1-1.
UNLESS YOU'RE ME ON A BUGGY VERSION WHERE HE SOMETIMES DECIDES TO GET HIMSELF INTO LOSING STANCES
We’ve already discussed my thoughts on Twitter so here I will say instead that I have a plan on how to bring Herman Toothrot back into the series: let him once again be an unreliable narrator. Guybrush is the only one who heats the initial reveal, and Elaine’s coordination with him can easily be hand waved away as Herman playing along like the nut job he is. Guybrush can talk to Herman about the events of EMI and the reveal, but his oddities, amnesia and general refusal to make sense can be used to cast doubt on whether EMI happened the way we played it and/or whether his reveal was legitimate or just Herman being crazy, allowing for picking and choosing which parts of the series’ most retcon-heavy game remain canon depending on the needs of the story.
-As bad as they say?
Answer: Yes.
Zombie LeChuck looks like a cartoon alligator in this game.
The Zombie pirate LeChuck was such a far call from the one depicted in LeChuck's Revenge and CoMI!
To me the real secret of Monkey Island is still the treasure of Big Whoop.
Herman’s the subject of at least two retcons. The other is how LeChuck killed captain Marley. In Curse of Monkey Island, LeChuck brags to Guybrush that he was the one who knocked him into that whirlpool.
Really enjoyed this video! My controversial opinion regarding EFMI is: its 3D art style is still better than what TellTale did to the first games :l
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it!
i really enjoy this game...
I do too! As much as I riff on Monkey Kombat and the controls, I love Escape with a passion!
@@NoirReservoir i play this game..i think in my life 5 or 6 times. The first 2 or 3 times i didnt enjoy the monkey battle...some change with the time x).
Worst game of the series, but when the series is Monkey Island, it's still a great, fun game.
Awesome channel name! Who came up with it?
Thank you! Just myself!
I also find this game not so bad, actually...
I remember playing it back then and it didn t look good even for the time. The models were ugly and the backgrounds bleak and washed out. After playing Curse this was a dissapointment. With the 3d they could save a lot of cost and time then hamd animating. I think that was a decesion
It's a good game. It's just kinda ugly.
I have the same mic as you!
To me the true unrevealed secret of Monkey Island is where the hell Timmy the Monkey came from
This random monkey comes out of seemingly nowhere and is adressed as if it is a beloved recurring character, after MI4 i replayed the previous games to see if i could find mention of him. Nope, Guybrush just says ''hey! Its Timmy the Monkey!'' and that is fact now. Timmy has always been here.
What makes it even better is that if im recalling correctly this character has pretty much 0 impact on the game, so they just randomly brought in some monkey and pretended he was there all along for absolutely no reason.
I believe a lot of the negative reviews are for the PC version of the game. Technical issues.
The first two thirds of the game are good
even worst, 5 sec video, ended
What basically destroyed it is the last part and that fucking monkey combat... travesty doesn't cover it
Great cover art though.
This shitty game was so shitty that killed lucas adeventures
Yay, I'm in a youtube video :D
Great video as always. I think i will play EMI this weekend now, and see, if i like it as much as when i was like, 12 years old :)
