I’ve tried every size from 7.5 to 8.5. I’m 8 for life. Not a boat, not a toothpick. A good middle ground. And the wheelbase and board aren’t long. I skate Crailtap G008’s. 8 x 31.8375. Favorite shape. Girl for life. Been mostly skating them for 29 years.
I think it depends on foot size. Can I ask you please what size your foot? Mine is ~10-10.5 and I can't handle boards that less than 8.2, my feet are just too far away both sides)
i also switched from 8 to 8,25 twiwn tails, i think you should have set it up with new trucks to size right away. the truck offset makes honestly way more difference then the extra deck width. also then your bushings are fresh and you dont have grooves in your trucks yet so you can take full advantage of the twin tail
Bruh seriously lol, I feel like the flip to grind that he didn't land were just his way of feeling the board out and trying to bail to see outcomes lol
Consider that Thunder 148 (8.25) are not just wider, they also come with a different height (147 team = 50mm, 147 forged = ~49mm, 148 team = 52mm, 148 forged = 51mm). Good news is, kingpin clearance is a bit better with 148. In fact I like 148 better but I got awakened and moved to venture hi ;).
Does really have a difference between thunder 148 Standard and 148 Lights ? I hesitate between the two. I come from an 8 with 139 Hollows indy and I want to change with an 8.1 or 8.2 but with a fairly short length for my little legs, so I was wondering which was the best 148 to take !
problem is 147 thunders are shorter than 148 thunders, an extra variable that will change up the muscle memory. Probably wouldn’t matter to Tom tho lmao
I think this just demostrates your consistency. A lot of these still looked so good with a bigger board. I believe Chris Cole mentioned in an interview way back that having matching trucks the size of his board helped him wonders. That extra board defintely can throw ya off.
Ha I just went from 8.25 back down to 8' made manuals much easier for an old fart '48' like myself, love your content wish we had this as kids being able to talk to your fav skaters only had mags and 411VM's to get to know them ahhhr memories ha!.. keep on killing it cobba....
I'm a taller guy and I've always felt kickflips and switch flips feel better on longer boards felt better and I believe it's because the length helps with keeping the board stay straight in the air. I'm 6'2" and skate 8.38 x 32.25 and 8.75 x 32.5. If you are a bigger person more wood means you will probably not break boards as often. but they are heavy so get lighter trucks and smaller wheels or don't skip leg day. Wheelbase definitely effects things but I've been skating for 25 years 14.25 to 14.5 seems to be what works for me, but I have a theory that wheelbase is a size that should be determined by rider physical size or what the skater is skating. But I've noticed taller skater 6'+ going short wb, it not really working out and going but up or skater that skate real fast (bowl\transition\vert\hill bombing). Sorry for the nerdy term paper.
Currently I'm riding an 8 size, since years now, I recently get one of your pro model VX Everslick, this will be the next deck I'll set up, I'm really hyped about it... I'm a little sad seing that you'll not continue with this size 😅😓 By the way, thanks for sharing all of these contents, facts and impression, I used to enjoy it with my wife, Love from France ✌️❤
I actually just went down to an 8".. Was on an 8.25 for a while and actually prefer it - especially for flip tricks. 8.25 is nice though for noseslides and tailslides (less foot drag)
i had the same delima.. i skated 7.75/7.8 for 15 years and lately been skateboarding 8.125 primitive decks that miles gives me and i can still keep my tech tricks !!!
Santa Cruz needs a Twin ''Tapered Tip'' for you. 8.125 x 14 wheelbase x 31.5 length 8.25 x 14.125 wheelbase x 31.5 length 8.4 x 14.19 wheelbase x 31.5 length I think those might be some really sweet dimensions for you @TOM ASTA
Was looking forward to this video for this reason, would love to see Tom try one of those 8.2's or an 8.125 with the shorter wheelbase and hear his thoughts. Been doing the same myself with a set of thunder 148's which thankfully run both widths perfectly, 149's would maybe be a tad too wide personally on an 8.2.
I used to ride an 8.5 board, downsized to an 8.25 for a brief time before i moved to size 8 boards. I'm a size 13 so it might look funny, but a smaller light board helps with pop and allows for more tech tricks. Plus it's for that 90's and 2000's steez factor.
I've been skating 8.25 for about 15 years now, but I just got an 8.5 Hockey deck, shovel shape, with the new Independent x Hockey 149's. Spitfire Lock-Ins 54's. I'm trying to get used to the heaviness of it. But it's a fun ride so far.
I bet changing to wider trucks will feel more different than a wider board and same trucks. Hard to explain, but it will shift the feeling of the grinding surface under your feet. Been there a few times. It's fun to have many setups though. Some people say they can't do it, but for me the more I have, the more I switch it up, the faster I can adapt each time.
I'm convinced board size correlates with skate style as well. Bowl is more popular than ever and I could imagine a bigger board (& trucks!) helps locking in and cruising there. However, for us who like flip in flip out tech stuff the quicker pops and flicks from the smaller boards should simplify the process.
The pointier nose doesn't have the bulk to flick the kickflip closer to where your hardware is causing you to have to extend your flick further out and the smaller trucks doesn't give you the same range of where you can pinch the grind resulting in you not being able to get as much angle when you do pinch into the grind
Super curios about how bigger trucks would impact your crooks. I am thinking of upping my truck size for basically that exact reason. If you do stick with that board size and get bigger trucks I personally would really appreciate an update. Also just want to say you always make skating look like so much fun, some other dudes make it look like work. Just appreciating your style I guess. Thanks man!
It’s interesting seeing pros talk about the details of their skateboards. I’ve never known what size I skated, understood the truck size differences, and wheel dynamics back in my skating days. I just bought what I could afford to get. Now that I have adult money, and getting back into skateboarding. Wanting to figure out what board would work for me is something I’m interested in. I’ve heard a lot of stuff about twin tail boards and twin nose boards. Seeing this makes me wanna try giving the twin concept a chance. I use to use my nose as the tail because it was bigger, and it felt like it popped higher. So seeing these kind of decks being a thing, ima have to try it out
Tip if you want to start skating a wider or especially longer board without changing how the timing feels when doing tricks: You have to also make your setup higher either by using riser pads or by skating bigger wheels. It really works
That’s almost the exact same setup I skate. Love having the board wider than the trucks. Weird to get used to but I think it makes tre flips flow better. 8.2 is a perfect size too
I’m currently skating a shape I thought I’d try for a change and definitely noticing I’m not skating to my full potential. It’s cool to see you switch it up and definitely is gunna motivate me to keep pushing harder!
I got to meet you at tampa pro either 2015 or 16 and we took a picture. its insane how you’re putting out youtube videos of raw skating no other skater doing it like you. Also I rode 8 for the longest switched to 8.25 for a few years and now i skate 8.18 with 8.25 trucks. Love it
First video I've watched on your channel. Interesting how you theorize your approach to skateboarding and the use of the board as an object. One more subscriber!
Appreciate you breaking down how the changes in shape and size are actually affecting you (good and bad) versus just hyping up the new board to sell it.
So cool. That switch front shove just looked more enjoyable. I hope u have so much fun and find more joy in skating. I went bigger too, and I feel that allowing yourself to extend your style becomes possible, one thing I remember doing right away was placing my feet closer together and wanting to pop even higher than ever, and trusting that different experience, and man! Bigger and faster happens when you just let it, and it's so rewarding. I'm so stoked to hear this, you're like my favorite skater and I just hope you enjoy the ride even more now! Definitely wanna find out with ya, awesome!
Yoo I'm about a week from opening my shop called Pivotal Skateshop in central PA and I just grabbed a couple of your new boards for the board wall..always been watching you skate so glad I can support ya Tom! Hope you can come by the shop sometime if you come through the area.

You got it, @Tom Asta. just a few kicks and got used to it. I am riding an 8.125 board with 149 regular Thunders. My next board is definitely going to be 8.2, for sure. Quick question about Thunders. What bushings should I use after the original ones break off? I tried Thunders Black bushings and felt so weirdly "too loose" that I put the originals back. I am looking for a stiffer bushings. What should I try? As always cheers from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Bro, this is so relatable to me right now, im in th same place considering going up to 8.2 from an 8, i used to religiously ride a 7.75 and my reasoning for favoring it was due to its lite weight requiring less effort to flip. However ive taken to 8s in the last 2 years and thinking an 8.2 would be more suitable to me in a it jus fits my skating and type of tricks i do better kinda way.
Really interesting topic! I recently jumped from 7,75 to 7,875 and landet at 8,0 and this feels perfect for me with shoesize 10. Sometimes i think going up to 8,125 would be nice but flipping with 8 feels much better.
Between 8:00 - 8.5 all my tricks I can do but either size has its pros and cons leveraged, you could say 8.25 is a happy medium but personally I like either all the benefits of a wide deck or all the benefits of a skinny deck and 8.25 feels like I'm missing out on both rather than just picking 1 , I skate 8.125 at the moment and I'm sure I'll change again at some point but I'm enjoying how easy it is to tre compared to my 8.5
Santa Cruz should make your board in 2-3 sizes, I would have got one days ago! I'm definitely going to try this one. I already got my white és Accels and my cargo pants, I need the complete Tom Asta kit😂😂😂
Wicked Tom, I'm finding 8.25 is around my optimum size (for a pretty crappy beginnerish, old man skater 😂) I'm skating the Fabi Delfino Santa Cruz 8.25 powerply, which I'm loving from the first session on it. Poppy af, and flipping/shuving good. I def think matching truck size will help with feeling and locking in a little better 👍🏾
I changed my setup from 9.5 symmetrical egg to a 8.25 twin tail. Literally, I am flying. I always had pop but now I have to force my deck to go down because she just wants to fly. :) :) I am flying like a bird man. I ride Chocolate. 14 wb (another big change...from 14.25 to 14.00 wb).
I remember back in 2002-2003 board sizes were like 7.5, 7.75 max and that was my preferred size. Wheels were also very small BUT shoes and jeans were huge lol
Everyone, PLAY AROUND. I spent years on an 8" board. Now my main is a Heroin Skateboards Razor Egg that is 9.5" wide. I've also been skating the new Santa Cruz Winkoski Dope Planet VX deck a lot. That shit is crazy. Old school board shape with some crazy techy concave shit and the VX stuff is NOT a gimmick. The boards are very different. Super thin and light, and super poppy.
Nollie heel crook was done once before in "The BREAK IN PROCESS!" video almost a year ago! About 10min 54sec in. Went on a little scavenger hunt for this one!
I prefer 8.5 trucks on 8s, like widening stance on a car, makes the board feel more planted and helps with getting into grinds and stops the board from tipping on certain flip tricks for a more level pop off of the nose or tail especially with how tight I skate my trucks
I stepped up to 8.25 with a 14 wheel base, 149 Indy’s and once I got use to it everything is easier. I think the wider trucks help a lot with grinds and locking in properly on an 8.25
Been skating Girl for 10+ years, transitioned to Primitives cause of the shape similarities imo. Size I’ve been skating is 8.25 as a grown adult. Growing up I was 7.75-8. Been on 8.25 for this long, love the shape and feel never gonna change up
If you’re thinking about staying with the 8.2, you should ask them to shorten the wheel base for you. Maybe a 14 wheel base, Could help with your timing when popping especially when riding thunders.
Great video man, yes. You need to use thunders 148 trucks , cause your new board is 8.2 solid, 8.25 trucks. Provably you I'll fell more comfortable, as the same time 53 or 54 size wheels as well.
if the trucks are smaller than the board the crook pinch tends to move more on the inside of the board instead of right on the edge of it so that's gonna take some getting used to
Hey Tom, you adapted so quick! You say the width isn’t hard to flip or spin, which is great, but can you elaborate on how the width of the deck feels different to 8.0? I just upsized from 7.75 to 8, but I’m tempted to try 8.25. Thank you!!
You can put 2 or 3 washers on the inside of the wheel to bring the wheels out so you can see them I prefer that over the larger truck, let us know how you make out
it may be worth swapping trucks sooner rather than later! Thunder 148's sit a little higher than the 147's so will throw you off again when you switch. Just had the same problem myself haha
Im size 7 shoes and highest size board i can go is 7.8 its a happy medium to me for now. can't handle size 8 and up. Tried many times and i can't perform my flip tricks. So yeah either 7.75 or 7.88. Thats my choice. Just wanted to share. Awesome content by tom. 👍 much love from malaysia. 🇲🇾
I’ve been on an 8.5 since 2008 lol. Pretty insane because I was a little guy back then but I’ve always liked bigger boards. Easier to control grinds and slides especially. Always was better for gaps and stairs too imo.
Nice video! I used to skateboard the 8.00, and then I changed to 8.125, which I ended up sticking with. Have you tried 8.125? If so, how different is it from the 8.2 (especially when it comes to ledges and full cabs)? Btw which brand is the pants? It looks nice!
The size change in trucks will be much more significant than the board size change. try this first before getting new trucks. My SUPER TIP for you: add a few (3 or so to start) washers to each axel, on the inner side of the wheel to push your wheels out, making your truck wider without the added weight of a real truck size change. And if the extra washers prevent the nut from being secure on the axel threads, just put some shoe goo on the end of the axel/nut. Strong enough to stop the nut from spinning but weak enough to be able to screw off with a skate tool.
You’ll get used to it. Probably quicker than you think too. Its just the adjusting period that sucks. I’ve upped my board size multiple times and it is definitely the length that took me the most getting used to, and also an increase in weight.
been skating 7.75 all my life I even remember having 7.5 on my early days but as soon as I understood there were different board sizes and it was noted I picked 7.75 Nowadays it’s all above 8 I can ride 8 max but it feels like a boat to me and I’m 6 ft tall When I ride an above 8 size it’s just too heavy and when I go back to 7.75 i’s just ridiculously easy to flip fast and nice !
most decks ive had have been a bit long where as i prefer my element 7.75 and havent bought another 7.75 since as i dont skate anymore but 8" up i find length to be a bit long for my short legs. backside flip is consistent on a 7.75 length deck and more of a struggle with 14" wheelbase decks.
Gotta test out the 8" again so I can cop some of your boards, also would you say that the more tapered nose helps build more precision? (Ex like getting into kf crooks, or flips into rails, etc) or no?
Smaller trucks probably have something to do with missing the KF front crook lock in
This
Yea I think it's time for bigger trucks for me
Definitely

However ive taken to 8s in the last 2 years and thinking an 8.2 would be more suitable to me in a it jus fits my skating and type of tricks i do better kinda way.
Really interesting topic! I recently jumped from 7,75 to 7,875 and landet at 8,0 and this feels perfect for me with shoesize 10. Sometimes i think going up to 8,125 would be nice but flipping with 8 feels much better.
Between 8:00 - 8.5 all my tricks I can do but either size has its pros and cons leveraged, you could say 8.25 is a happy medium but personally I like either all the benefits of a wide deck or all the benefits of a skinny deck and 8.25 feels like I'm missing out on both rather than just picking 1 , I skate 8.125 at the moment and I'm sure I'll change again at some point but I'm enjoying how easy it is to tre compared to my 8.5
Youre gonna love an 8.25. Ive been thinking of going up to 8.5.
8.5 is what I like.
Bro your videos always make me want to go skate. You make it look like youre just always chilling and having fun. Bouta get my sesh in later today
You get a board in an 8.2 or 8.25....ill FOR SURE get your board. Lowkey....i BEEN waitin for that to happen
once you get used to it I feel you will really enjoy the extra landing room
Went on a little scavenger hunt for this one!
yesss! THANKS for your research lol
I think the wider trucks help a lot with grinds and locking in properly on an 8.25
A small change can make a huge difference, but mostly just in your head.
Looks solid, super interested to know if getting 8.25 trucks does that front crook differently. 2 set ups on the next video?
just found out about your channel. always liked your skating but never new you posted videos here. so cool! instant subscription
Provably you I'll fell more comfortable, as the same time 53 or 54 size wheels as well.
if the trucks are smaller than the board the crook pinch tends to move more on the inside of the board instead of right on the edge of it so that's gonna take some getting used to
yup! ill be upping the trucks soon! THANKS for watching !
Thank you Tom for giving us real content.
Hey Tom, you adapted so quick! You say the width isn’t hard to flip or spin, which is great, but can you elaborate on how the width of the deck feels different to 8.0? I just upsized from 7.75 to 8, but I’m tempted to try 8.25.
Thank you!!
just feels more stable..like the amount of my foot on the board feels really good...but flipping and spinning felt the same! THANKS for watching !
The front crook is cause you can't see your front toeside wheel to guide it into the lock. Try a wider truck or some washers on inside of wheels. :)
You can put 2 or 3 washers on the inside of the wheel to bring the wheels out so you can see them I prefer that over the larger truck, let us know how you make out
I started skating in 2001 and ngl, I miss my 7.5's sometimes. Any flip trick was so easy and effortless on those boards...
it may be worth swapping trucks sooner rather than later! Thunder 148's sit a little higher than the 147's so will throw you off again when you switch. Just had the same problem myself haha
best skate yt channel rn!!!!
I think this guy has the best style I’ve seen like his tricks just look amazing
Im size 7 shoes and highest size board i can go is 7.8 its a happy medium to me for now. can't handle size 8 and up. Tried many times and i can't perform my flip tricks. So yeah either 7.75 or 7.88. Thats my choice. Just wanted to share. Awesome content by tom. 👍 much love from malaysia. 🇲🇾
I recently started skating 8.38" boards up from 8.25" (although I prefer symmetrical egg shapes if I can get my hands on one)
Keep at it Tom!!!!!!! You da best man!!!!
this sesh was a masterclass!!! damnnnn
I recently moved up to 8.25 too after skating 8s for years. I moved up the truck size too. It definitely helps 😁 Great video Tom 🤙🤘
sickkkk THANK YOU!
Twin Tail ist sowieso das beste für mich.🧡 Skate jetzt seit 2 Jahren Twin Tail Real Ishod 8.25 Boards und möchte dies nicht mehr missen.
Cheers Tom! Keep killin’ it! 🛹🛹🛹🌏🌎🌍👍
Strong enough to stop the nut from spinning but weak enough to be able to screw off with a skate tool.
damnnn! THANKS for the tips my dude and thanks for watching !
You're welcome. Happy tinkering!@@tomasta
You’ll get used to it. Probably quicker than you think too. Its just the adjusting period that sucks. I’ve upped my board size multiple times and it is definitely the length that took me the most getting used to, and also an increase in weight.
Just sized down myself, haha.
Would you ever consider a 8.0 twin? Been hoping Santa Cruz puts one out.
Love that you left the missed 360 flip in there, keeping it real ❤
that had me shook for a sec lol glad the rest of the session went ok haha
let's goo! been looking for a TA deck, 8's too skinny for my old legs and bowl skatin', gonna grab one of those 8.2s!
I think I should do the same, skating 7.75 taper board... your swich flip was crazy !!!
been skating 7.75 all my life
I even remember having 7.5 on my early days but as soon as I understood there were different board sizes and it was noted I picked 7.75
Nowadays it’s all above 8
I can ride 8 max but it feels like a boat to me and I’m 6 ft tall
When I ride an above 8 size it’s just too heavy and when I go back to 7.75 i’s just ridiculously easy to flip fast and nice !
most decks ive had have been a bit long where as i prefer my element 7.75 and havent bought another 7.75 since as i dont skate anymore but 8" up i find length to be a bit long for my short legs. backside flip is consistent on a 7.75 length deck and more of a struggle with 14" wheelbase decks.
Twin tail is genius, I avoid doing 180 rotating tricks because of landing of the HUGE tail on a regular shape (8.5 board)
More board to catch🔥 Amazing
your skating style is amazing
I ride 8.5 thunder team hollows on an 8.25 Crailtap twin tip. Locks into fs crooks and fs feebles nicely
welcome to the board madness club
Gotta test out the 8" again so I can cop some of your boards, also would you say that the more tapered nose helps build more precision? (Ex like getting into kf crooks, or flips into rails, etc) or no?
The kick flips look 🔥
