The old generation is not about virtuosity but what the piece reflects.

The imagery in this prelude is particularly good. I can just see and feel the tumultuous winds slowing down and speeding up through the mountains. Playful, yet abrupt and violent.

Amazing performance ! ABM is unique ! No words to describe his artistry ! The best version of this prelude. A true master of the piano and one of the most sincere and dedicated artists ever existed in this earth. He was seeking the truth not the fame of a star-pianist.His eyes is the evidence of that truth. You can feel that in every note he has played if you ever played a single note

Michelangeli was the greatest Debussy interpret of all the times. No other pianist until today plays Debussy so pure in sound and naration as Michelangeli. The sound enginner who made this recording and also the piano tuner deserve also a huge compliment. One can hear the same music with Richter, and who is still not completely deaf, will remark the huge difference in interpretation and also in sound from the first notes.

What happens around 3:39-3:40? Obviuosly, an entire bar has been cut out.
Good performance, btw. Yuori Egorov does quite good, too.

Pollini plays the instrument wonderfully, whereas Michelangeli plays the music wonderfully
Pollini is the athlete, Michelangeli the poet...

c' è una sostanziale diffrenza tra i grandi pianisti e michelangeli che mentre i primi duettano con il pianforte michelangeli semplicemente suona il pianoforte

You're absolutely right. If you know the music, you can tell that maybe 3 chords are missing, and you can also hear the large 'click' where the music was improperly edited together. What is with that?

the long Eucalyptus leaves outside my windows are blowing in the wind making these shapes to the rythym

@arturon111 yes, here the legato and the sweeps sounds like real wind and the tremolos also the prasing, the eveness, the richness of the sound without being ever harsh.

  • @kdj24370

@arturon111 Actually, that B is not in the score. While it IS a pedal point, Debussy leaves it out during the second time that theme comes around.

    Without his incomparable performance ,
Debussy's works would have been very lonely and insipid ,
and the enjoyment and pleasures of Debussy's works would have been less ,
and I would feel that Debussy's music world is like the taste of vapid beer .

@kdj24370 Ok, me too. Arraus version in my opinion is the overall BEST. Not michelangeli's, Arraus has the right Debussy sound different than any other sound Arrau obtains for any other composer. Plus is the only one that brings out the spirtitual side of Debussy's music

michelangeli's playing is quite leaden and mannered in places imho
pollini isn't the greatest debussy interpreter but he nails this particular prelude better than arturo

stimmt, er war viel zu "cool", keine Dramatik im Ton. Insbesondere die Stelle mit der Umspielung der trillerartigen Figur - trocken im Klang und in der Emotion

  • @arturon111
    @arturon111 13 років тому

@kdj24370 gieseking is better than michelangeli, has many colors, great sound (even if its an old recording) but lack of details. And debussy wrote TOO many detils on EACH prelude and sometimes on every note. Arrau plays this prelude EXCEPTIONALLY well, full of details power and clarity
