85 GM I was sharp compared to old EF and F lenses, but compared to basically any newer Sony E lens it isn't that sharp, even struggles to beat 85/1.8 FE which is sooo much cheaper but at the time of release it was fantastic and it held up pretty well upgrade from Sony side was really needed and so far it looks like they did a good job
I saw the price at which you can preorder it here in Europe. The GM is RRP at 1799, but you get it new in stores generally for 1500. The new GM II was up for pre order at 2100. That would be about 600 more than the first version. The 50 1.2 is 2299, so the new 85 1.4 would only be 200 less than a 1.2 prime... I was for sure interested in the GM II but not if that is the price hike here in Europe
Yep, and then you see the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art for sub 1000€ brand new or 750-850€ second hand in very good condition. Sure the GM II is slightly better and lighter, but that's not remotely worth 1000+ bucks (literally more than double the price)
So I went GM all the way; 14mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm primes and zoom 16-35mm and 24-70mm… 85mm and 135mm I saved some $$$ and opted for Samyang… simply because I mostly do Video and little else… Don’t you know, my last shoot we had a legitimate need for 85mm so my Samyang finally got some use! I doubt there would have been an appreciable difference… maybe slightly better auto re-focusing on my moving subjects… but not on my list (dare I say, hope NOT having to buy another lens… ever again 😏
Great video and representation of what the new 85 GM II is and isn't. Sadly, I am actually not too excited about this lens. I am very happy with my Sigma 85mm f/1.4, which I got because the old 85 GM was quite a bit softer, but I would've switched for an 85 f/1.2, which is the lens I expected Sony to make to compete with the Canon and Nikon 85 1.2 lenses. I didn't think they'd make another 85 1.4.

As always a very honest review and calms the gear acquisition syndrome symptoms. I have the Sigma 90mm f2.8 and I love it, small little package that delivers stunning images.
At 10:25 the side by side portrait shots the new lens gives a much punchier more depth 3D looking image than the old one. Also the Fence and Rope shots with fringing were interesting. The Blue fringe on the white rope makes the image look more 'milky' like comparing a standard LED TV to an OLED TV in image. I'm surpised the conclusion was the new lens is slightly better because it looks WAY better. So much more image pop.
But it would have been very expensive, and the 85mm 1.4 clearly needed to be upgraded. Perhaps the 85mm 1.2 will still be released as a more expensive, heavier and premium lens
Cool video.. but it was kind of weird to me.. the version 2 was clearly sharper with richer colors and you said it was quieter and lighter.. yet you didn't really seem to want to like it for some reason.. lol. That's just my opinion.. I'm probably wrong tho.. Either way.. Thanks for the Video!
I went from a Nikon D750 with the relevant Nikon, Tamron and Sigma lenses, up to the S5 II with some only OK lenses (Panasonic S primes, mainly), and found that although each of these upgrades that they make every few years is not very big, over that kind of time (a 2012 camera and 2008/2010 lenses to 2021, 2022 era lenses and body), the difference became really noticable. Now, when I shoot on my D750, the images do like kind of "old", meaning, basically not super sharp and a bit grainy at more than ISO 800. But also, I have lots of printed photos on my wall from 2012, and none from 2024... so...
I’m not a video shooter and I own the version 1. I’ve considered buying the upgrade but may just pass since I also have the 50/1.2 GM and 135/1.8 GM to use along side it for portraits. Weight reduction and AF speed are what I’m considering the most but will have to determine if 5he update is worth the cost. Thank you and take care.
I think it was your original video on the 85 1.4 GM vs their 85 1.8 G which made be end up purchasing the 1.8, specifically because I didn’t want the focus motor noise. Thanks for making this review. Good to consider when and if I upgrade that lens.
Well, was really hoping the mark II had enough improvements in auto focus to warrant the upgrade, but looks like we'll be sticking with our mark I and hoping it lasts us after it gets back from Precision Repair. $500 for a new autofocus ring, went out with no damage after a few years.
As the owner of 85GM , I have to say I respectfully dis agree with you when you said : G master 1 is really sharp when against the other lenses," in fact, I found even the cheap Sony 85 1.8 is sharper than my 85 GM at the edge, not to mention other E-mount 85 I own, the Zeiss Loxia 85 is day and night sharper than the 85GM wit much better local contrast, , the Zeiss Milvus 85 1.4 also sharper, and even the Zeiss Batis is sharper than the GM, the original 85 GM it's one I consider with least sharpness 85 mm I own, yes I own all those mentioned.. so I am not surprised at all the GM II is sharper than the GM1, it would be really disappointing if it is not. However, sharpness is not the #1 consideration for portrait lens, that's why I own one at the first place. I have the GM i since day 1.. the only problem is the lens AF really slow.. I mean it's really slow. Even 1/500 for slow moving subject.. in burst mode.. only 1st pic and maybe 4th pic is sharp. The rest are all not pin sharp. It's crazy. I dont have such issue on my 35GM or 50GM etc. even at 1/125..
Thanks for the review. Given how mkii improvements have come to many GM optics I was anticipating this upgrade to the slowish focusing 85 original GM from about 2 years ago. Slightly surprised it took this long, but I'm used to being spoiled by Sony and pleased it's now finally here 😊. I will probably buy in due course. Right now I'm honestly not unhappy with the underrated and otherwise terrific value Sony 85mm G f1.8. I'm lucky being able to afford lots of Sony lenses, so will probably buy this as I didn't really rate the original which is why I bought the compact G f1.8. If I do buy I need to consider if I should sell my G. I might just keep both (sorry if that sounds profligate). All I'm saying is this new lens is undoubtedly great, but not an immediate priority for me right now. Sure this mkii will be better, faster focusing, slightly sharper, better in many ways (bar cost and heft') than the 'poot relation' G variant.
Been using the original 85mm 1.4 since 2019 and the sharpness can be abit softer at times but it was never really an issue. Especially if you're going for more of a filmic look and don't need clinical sharpness then the gm1 is more than enough. The AF noise is there but primarily in AF-S, almost non existent in AF-C. Would be great to see Sony release a 1.2 in the near future like they did with the 50mm. Don't think I'll be upgrading at this point. Thanks for the review Gerald.

i kinda like the GMI look a bit more. The GMII is sharper, but it almost looks too perfect, and I don't want that on a portrait lens. 10:53 is a perfect example - the GMI looks much better.
true, always thought it cant be that bad in terms of AF and then i got to use it. it was all true unfortunately 🤣. what would you say is the weakest lens in the gm lineup? maybe 100mm STF or something
I was using 85 1.4 GM for 5 years, and I don't know if you were lucky, but in video, AF is trash. It can't catch up with the subject at all, and you can hear how hard the motor is trying to move that hufe glass inside. In my opinin, don't get 85 1.4GM I in any cercamstance. It's so bulky that it will always hit your tripod mount or something. The sharpness also says for itself. Get Mark 2 guys, don't even look at the first one, it is probably slowest lense I used on a Sony system, out of 15 lenses at least.
That's how I feel when I watch these reviews, well, I don't have the new lens to compare it myself but seems like I like the bokeh better from the old 85GM I used to own.
Idk I feel like I don't really need a F/1.2 over 1.4 for an 85mm. It would only make full body shots have a bit more background blur, but at the same time make the lens much heavier... And pricier. Especially when travelling I like to have lighter prime lenses.
I think Sony's crazy to only improve so very little after 8 years and a half with the GM i. They clearly botched on this one when they couldve released an 85 1.2.
OOOOOoooo... Did I miss hearing Sony has no say in this review"? (Surely an oversight...) edit: Also noticed you *can't* have been "done" at the end since you didn't declare yourself *"undone"* at the start. ;-)>
if you buy this, you will always think about the fact that you have a 1.4 lens and that others have 85mm f/1.2. If you buy an 85/1.2, you are done with it. That's why I always choose f/1.2. and stick with Canon.
The old one shows way more contrast once the whole picture is shown. So far for improvement. It seems pixel peepers are really missing the whole picture.
This is how I know that I'm a camera geek... I have ZERO intention of buying this lens, and I took in every word on this video like knowing the stats was going to cure cancer. Hmmm....
The mark 1 had a notorious issue with making a grinding sound while autofocusing. Sony would not officially accept it was a warranty issue, but would replace it you pushed hard enough. Glad to see a new, lighter and faster focusing version. Strangely, I like aesthetic of the old bulbous body. Thanks for an another great video. 🍻
Very cool..my older 85 1.4GM just gave out on me..this is a much needed upgrade!... Yes 8 years wait is crazy..I dont mind the 1.4...but to nit pick Sony had 8 years to come out with a 1.2!!!..come on!! and for them to just release a 1.4 II..is kinda disappointing...yes I will pick one up..but if Sigma releases a new 85 1.2..then I might have to certainly rethink about selling this 1.4 II..lol
@@Kevon420that would be the better option (in my opinion) for non-professionals. Sigmas glass is top notch and if you don’t have to worry about Sonys limitations, then why bother buying the Sony version. I’m curious to know if Sony is going to change its stance on how they do business with 3rd party lens manufacturers now that Nikon and canon are going to start getting 3rd party lenses, will Sony continue to limit 3rd party lens capabilities?

Idk I feel like I don't really need a F/1.2 over 1.4 for an 85mm. It would only make full body shots have a bit more background blur, but at the same time make the lens much heavier... And pricier. Especially when travelling I like to have lighter prime lenses.
Who needs 1.2 and why?
Used a Canon f1.2 and 1.4, the slightly blurrier background isn’t worth everything else that came with its being 1.2.
Why not a 105 f1.4?
€2100?? gotta be an april fool, or a piss take or a canon rf lens money grab
Sony will never make an APO lens will they.. They just can't resist making everything small and thus reliant on digital correction..
Since when does Chris Pratt make detailed lens reviews on youtube?
I think Sony's crazy to only improve so very little after 8 years and a half with the GM i. They clearly botched on this one when they couldve released an 85 1.2.
You only get 1/3 price of the GM if you trade in.
please make "buy it or dont" your title for whatever you review next! as always, appreciate the way you look at camera gear and what its really worth.
We talkin bout Practice!?
OOOOOoooo...
Did I miss hearing Sony has no say in this review"? (Surely an oversight...)
edit: Also noticed you *can't* have been "done" at the end since you didn't declare yourself *"undone"* at the start. ;-)>
You can tell he didn’t give a f*ck about this comparison 😂
Talking bout CAMERAS man!!!
Out of all the lenses ever made, this is one of them
FYI: It will come out to 1798
3D pop??
There's no such thing (your sensor and resultant images are 2D).
if you buy this, you will always think about the fact that you have a 1.4 lens and that others have 85mm f/1.2. If you buy an 85/1.2, you are done with it. That's why I always choose f/1.2. and stick with Canon.
Most disappointing GMii lens so far. Might as well give us f/1.2 or update 85 1.8
I don't own any sony camera, yet here I am...
Wheres the 85mm 1.2, is it even possible for e mount?
You will get heavy lens vignette with 1.2 so no benefit from that. Unless the lens becomes 50% bigger in size to compensate for that.
No twisting, oversaturating outro? Blasphemy!

Your head {giggles} is wider in the Mkii...WTF
The old one shows way more contrast once the whole picture is shown.
So far for improvement.
It seems pixel peepers are really missing the whole picture.
Buy canon rf 85 1.2 and forget about sharpness and fringing
B&H says $1800 USD. That's not terrible when around $2000 seems to be where Sony is putting all the new GM Zooms.
:)
This is how I know that I'm a camera geek... I have ZERO intention of buying this lens, and I took in every word on this video like knowing the stats was going to cure cancer. Hmmm....
Sigma for the win then?
The mark 1 had a notorious issue with making a grinding sound while autofocusing. Sony would not officially accept it was a warranty issue, but would replace it you pushed hard enough. Glad to see a new, lighter and faster focusing version. Strangely, I like aesthetic of the old bulbous body. Thanks for an another great video. 🍻
precisely why i didnt buy the mki and went with the 1.8 as i was waiting for this!
And noticeable internal debris seemingly having been the affect of the grinding of internal parts.
Rare to see the Sigma equivalent being lighter than the Sony version!
Great review! Would love to see a comparison between the Sony 85mm 1.4 GMII and the Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG Dn Art Lens which is much less expensive.
My thoughts too. That thing is so sharp. I want to see how well it holds up.
Sigma still wins
Last time I was this early, Gerald was talkinabootKAEMRUZ?
Can we get an R5ii video please?
Dissapointment of the year. Waited for 1.2 5 years
Buy a GM 1 second hand after the launch and save about 800 bucks
I have one and its an amazing lens!
Or just get the Sigma lens if you dont mind the FPS limiter thing.
@@Kevon420 The sigma lens was a little too big
@@Kevon420 but its a fantastic lens!
Nice segway to the Storyblocks read Gerald. Very natural.
I am very dissaoponted they didnt release 1.2 and now i am wondering why i have just bought 70-200
For 8 years later it’s not impressive and a bit obsolete even..? It almost feels like a firmware upgrade.
