Thank you for sharing this video. I am a 66 year old woman and the dealers refused to replace mine, but had no trouble to try and charge me $500 if I wanted it done. I told them to go take a hike. Got on UA-cam to see if anyone else had the same problem, came across your video and fixed the dam thing myself. We live in a disposal world. Again, thank you.
Same! They sent a recall a while back. They wanted to charge me same amount. I said nope! Years later I gave Toyota where I bought it a bad review and they said to bring it in. Still doing it myself.
@@digby_dooright Mine too. oh my that back TC hatch handle ,front drivers seats cover and left side driver trunk and light left side cover. yes everything falling down.
I would like to add that if you do shut your hatch on accident, you can still open it up if you crawl inside and take the bottom slot cover off and move the actuator arm yourself and it will release the lock. So don't panic if you do shut it or the button to open stops working. There IS a manual way to open it!
Thank you SO MUCH! Originally replaced mine during recall at dealer, but rubber on replacement handle melted badly. Melting, inferior rubber cover is a COMMON problem on several Toyota, Scion and Lexus models. Found a replacement handle and switch for a fraction of dealer's price. Your video made my exchange a snap. Thanks again.
thank you so much!! funds are tight and u saved me $180 labor! i bought the part seperately over a year ago and was a but intimidated to put it on. i finally have and it works great! God bless you!
The problem with replacing it is that you are just replacing a broken defective part with a new defective part. It will break over and over unless you actually address the root problem. The stock scion handle (and the vast majority of the aftermarket replacements) are defective by design. Here is an actual re-engineered part with a lifetime warranty: d2bdmotorwerks.com/i-16123391-tc-scion-hatch-handle-replacement-metal-05-10.html
You can def. reach all the screws from the access panel, my boyfriend and I just did it today. He actually was mad at me for starting to rip the whole interior panel off. In not sure about the electrical connector because mine was also cut and he is just wiring it without disconnecting it. Scion should really do something more about this. I hardly put any pressure in mine when it broke. It was because of the cold. This video was very helpful. Thank you very much.
Joe, I was just about to cut my wires, but fortunately I watched your Video and with your advice I opened the back panel. It took me ten mins. to replace the hatch handle! Thanks so much for this Video
Bad ass video!! Thank you!! This saved my ass. I was installing a rear view camera today and needed to know how I can thread the wire through the back hatch, and I also have that defective hatch release and needed to replace that as well, so you tackled 2 birds with one stone. Thanks!
THANK YOU! I actually like driving my car again now that it doesn't look so ghetto with tape and Velcro! - the piece I ordered off Amazon had a brass bracket that made it difficult for the two center bolts- I manufactured it well, hope it holds. The bolts couldn't slide in and also through the brass, so I bent it back and slid it i between the two and tightened it pretty well...
thank you, your video was extremely helpful....repaired my daughters 2006 TC yesterday. The nut on the old one were a pain to remove as it took a little time.
Mine broke and I fixed the hatch handle myself. I feel the cause of this breaking is the hatch struts. if the struts are worn the hatch will get very heavy and break the handle. I just replaced both hatch struts that i bought on ebay. i swear the hatch almost completely opens by it's self. by new struts before you break the handle again.
I have been receiving inquires regarding Toyota's "extended warranty" for the scion hatch issue. I would just recommend calling dealership close to you to find out for sure. In the case of the project scion in the video, the dealership provided the panel under the warranty but would not fix the cut switch wire without a charge.
Yeah the warranty / replacement / recall Toyota offered is long gone. The problem with replacing it is that you are just replacing a broken defective part with a new defective part. It will break over and over unless you actually address the root problem. The stock scion handle (and the vast majority of the aftermarket replacements) are defective by design. Here is an actual re-engineered part with a lifetime warranty: d2bdmotorwerks.com/i-16123391-tc-scion-hatch-handle-replacement-metal-05- 10.html
I had a 2005 Scion TC and had the same problem. I decided to trade it in for a new 2014 Scion TC, same problem. This is a defect on the hatches of Scion TC 's
My scions trunk struts have worn so badly that it barely stays open on its own and then one day the handle busted like a twig 😭 I haven’t been able to open my hatch in three months so wish me luck as I replace both! 😂
O wow that sounds frustrating. I am sure if you replace the Scion's trunk hatch pistons and the handle it should work good as new. Let me know how the repair goes and thanks for commenting.
I'm looking to get a car, and it has the broken hatch. It seems pretty easy to repair. But where would be a good place to get the panel and how much are they usually?
+Valerie Poling At the time when this video was made I went to Toyota and they gave it to me. They also would installed but I am not sure if they are still doing that or not. If you have trouble acquiring the part at Toyota I have heard some say you can find online through various vendors as well. Best of luck.
+Valerie Poling Or if they dont cover you since you purchasing already broken (like me) you can get this for 45$ which doesn't have to be painted to match or you can get that option as well. If you look on the site they have ones with emblem depression if you have the original handle thats broken and cant remove it. If not they have ones with out an emblem and its pretty sleek. www.1aauto.com/2005-10-scion-tc-liftgate-handle-garnish-%28with-depression-for-oe-emblem%29/i/1abmd00073?f=732504&y=2005
Thanks for watching and the comment. From what I can remember, I was not able to reach all the screws and the electric connector with just the access pieces removed.
Mine just broke. I can't believe this hatch handle can break off so easily. What's with the plastic hooks holding it in place. Seems like a intentional poor design.
Look this part up on Walmart.com no less. Free shipping and it is New and reinforced to correct this flaw. Badass looking, 32 dollars. Or pay 100 on Ebay for a used weak one....
I just recently changed mine on my tc. I called the dealership and was disgusted to hear that they wanted $189.99 for a plastic handle. Sooo, I went on ebay, found one that was brand new and i the same color but without the symbol for $26.99 and had it within 2 days. The symbol wasnt that hard to remove. In all it was about 25 minutes of work.
This happened to me about a year ago and since then my ENTIRE trunk does NOT open.....I just called a Toyota dealership and they said there's no warranty or recall...Clearly this is on them, Every TC that I see has a broken latch
Thanks for the video. I would like to add that if you want to remove the black panel completely you have to remove first two hidden bolts, at the upper corners, that can be only accessible by removing the column panels. tinypic.com/r/2aahxtz/8
If I remember right I cut the wire in order to be able to short the circuit and open the trunk. You can probably find a way to due this another way w/o cutting the wire

How did you get the trunk open when it shut without the electrical cable?
It was tricky btu I remember having to crawl in the back of the trunk of the Scion to do so.
useful for figuring out how to install a backup camera.

update on link?
Everything is still intact on my 2008 tC but the button to open the trunk works 25% of the time. Any ideas?
Need a new switch it seems.

im sorry but why the fuk did they make this part out of plastic. the shit breaks so dam easy. do they make them in metal?

That's true, if that truck closes you won't be able to open it again haha
