Stella Katherine Cole (from our “Flowers” remake) has a voice from another era and a mission to bring the Great American Songbook to a whole new generation of fans. In her second PMJ video, we took Billy Joel’s 1983 classic, “Uptown Girl” back to the days of Judy Garland, in this Old Hollywood-style up tempo jazz remake.

Usually I'm sceptical whenever somebody dares to try Judy Garland's style, but Stella did a fantastic job, really! You can tell that Judy's been a big inspiration for her, she sounds so much like her :)
Wow! The reharmonization from 2:06 to 2:12 is the icing on the cake of an already fantastic arrangement. The performance is perfect!

Would you mind explaining "reharmonization"? I can hear what you "flagged" and they're complex and intriguing moments, but I don't understand how it what they're doing there...

They also did something similar in the closeout chorus line starting @2:30. Changing up the key and chord progressions underneath the same melody has always been a staple of many a jazz remake throughout history, they did a phenomenal job with this.
What a great tempo! One of the wonderful things about PMJ is the amazing dynamics they achieve when playing as an ensemble… the ability to hold back and soften things up a little so that when the time comes to punch it up, we really feel it. Stella Katherine Cole has the ideal voice for this. A full-range contralto with that unique head-tone delivery that can peel back the decades allowing us to escape into a more innocent time. Plus, her performance is simply joyful! If you ever need reason to see these folks in person, this should be all it takes. Another brilliant artistic achievement from the masters of time!

That this song works so well in this style points to just how traditional Billy Joel’s songwriting is. I mean that as a compliment-his music is in the great tradition of American songwriting, as much Harold Arlen and rock ’n’ roll.
