1 out of 5 people living in Port-au-Prince died in the Haiti Earthquake. Rip to all those lost.
@Mike Dessal That might be true, but obviously the Haiti earthquake definitely did happen, scientists have records. And in a earthquake test program, it shows that houses would collapse on many hillsides, and people lived in very dense areas. According to the records, the population decreased by about 500,000 citizens from the years 2009 and 2010. That at would put the growth rate at about -18.99%.
@Mike Dessal okay but whether they lied or not DOESNT downplay the catastrophe that happened there, it was still a horrible situation whether you like it or not
@Mike Dessal When you are bound to a treaty, you are forced to pay billions of dollars. Haiti could not simply just ignore or say "no" to the treaty. If they did, France would've just invaded Haiti and taken their money away by force and maybe more.

Fun fact: Haiti did not abolish slavery. It has some of the most slaves out of any country in the world.
On August 14, 2021, a *M 7.2* earthquake struck the western side of Haiti, making the earthquake the strongest to hit the country since 1842. Shaking was felt all across Hispaniola and even into a few other countries. Hundreds are dead and thousands have been injured. I hope everyone who has been affected recovers from this horrendous and devastating disaster.
The dead people numbers are now rising as I’m typing this comment right now the death toll is now at 1297 and more than 5000 injured.

Same, why is France so quiet on this issue. It would be nice to get some perspective on this.
But that would be the same for the British empire taking wealth from countries like India when it was under the British empire, they won't give it back.
These western countries are rejecting immigration from their colonies without realising that their wealth and living comfort now are based on the struggles from these poor nations
agree. this is disgusting
What would be the point in giving Haitians money? They would waste it or have their leaders steal it anyways. Haitians couldn't even come together to help each other after a massive disaster and you expect them to responsibily spend any money they get?

I think one of the reasons why buildings were built of mostly concrete is due to it being able to cheaply resist hurricane force winds. Because don't forget that island gets hit by major hurricanes almost every year.
Started living on an island in the Bahamas six months ago it was very surprising initially to see that they were entirely constructed of concrete.
It's also expensive to important the materials they'd need to build earthquake proof
Concrete can be just as, or even more earthquake resistant than steel or wood structures, all you need is rebar. Add a couple THICC walls with massive matts of rebar, a strong slab and columns, both heavily reinforced, and that shit isn't falling down very easily. Even poorly placed rebar would be sufficient to prevent collapse of most structures.
@@TTime1312 Yeah we use concrete because it’s the easiest and strongest materials we have against hurricane. Regulations require steel rods to be inserted in between the concrete blocks for extra strength. However Historically earthquake activity doesn’t hit the Bahamas (The north at least) but the Earthquakes last year did cause some tremors. Worryingly even some chandeliers shook😬

I was 12 at the time, and was playing with my friends when we felt these huge tremors (stronger than usual), but we didn't give it much thought at that moment, until I went to my house and my mother told me just what happened. We were in shock and spent the night watching the news and Facebook. I didn't went to school the other day.
The next day my family donated lots of food, toilet papers and clothes we didn't use.
Another thing I remember is my french teacher. He lost many family members and didn't went to school for days. When he came back he told his story and sang "La Dessalinienne" in front of the entire school. It was really sad.
I also remember some nasty things... Those chain mails saying that Haiti was hit because of their religion... What the fuck

I am a dominican who lived on the island during the Haiti earthquake, I didn't feel any breeze or anything happen and had to look up the day it happened because there was no impact on our side. Haiti has been hit with natural disasters far more often than DR.
I’m Haitian American but I have never been to Haiti. I was thinking why didn’t the DR get hit by the earthquake but Haiti did. But I think it has to do with the tectonic plates being on the Haitian side near port au prince.
Is their side of the island cursed?
@@jaysonemile6633 I do know that the DR is fairly mountainous (so is Haiti, but much of the population of Port-au-Prince lives in a narrow valley between a couple chains), especially along the western areas close to the border with Haiti. Those mountain ranges may have played a role in shielding the country from much of the impact, if any. Santo Domingo likely felt it a little bit, but not much at all.

I’m Haitian-American, and my dad (who wasn’t there during the earthquake) has some pretty harrowing stories about his family during the earthquake.
And even this year, one of my teachers assigned me a project on the Haïti earthquake without really realizing I am Haitian myself (a very strange coincidence...or maybe she did 🤔), so I learned about everything you talked about in the video
So I just wanted to say, thanks for going so in-depth on Haïti’s tectonic, demographic, political, and economic history, as it really provided all the context needed to explain why the earthquake was so devastating. And I’ll add this too: sand was mixed in with the concrete to cut building costs, making them much weaker in the process
Another consequence of the earthquake were two 3m tall tsunamis, that still dealt significant damage, but got overshadowed by the devastation of the main quake
Wow, that also sounds like Italy - only worse, obviously, b/c stronger earthquakes. So sad.
YOU FUCKING CALLED IT!
I lost *one of my Taekwondo masters* to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, who - in a bitter twist of irony - was actually *working there to help design earthquake-resistant buildings!*
What a bummer! 😣
It is unfortunate but it goes on to see how corruption and lack of leadership can have severe consequences behind just the people being unhappy. As soon as anything challenges the infrastructure, it WILL crumble. It is important to keep in mind the importance of actually having a plan and being prepared for the worst when you live in such a region, and denounce the evils that lead a country to be so unprepared for such common disaster. The Haitian people deserve better than this.
Nice recommendation at this time
What was mentioned in this video wasn't all that happened, there was one more disaster that year.
In October of 2010 Hurricane Tomas brushed by the country as a Category 1 hurricane with 80mph winds. It didn't make landfall so the worst of the winds stayed well off shore but that didn't stop heavy rains from causing widespread mudslides that made some roads once again impassible, flooding the refugee camp in Haiti and exacerbating the cholera outbreak. Another 35 people were killed in this storm which is high for a Category 1 that didn't make landfall.
And Cholera
I'm from Santo Domingo, DR and I was a child when it happens, I didn't feel anything, I only knew it happened because of the TV. I remember destruction, hurt people, a lot of tension on every single channel on the TV. That was horrible.
I am haitian and thank you for making this video. I can tell you there are no building codes in Haiti so you build as you please (i should say as you can) . These mostly shady building doesn't account for earthquake therefore absorbed all the energy and that's increased the disaster.
France really did a number on Haiti
Do you know what's more saddening? Almost to the day 3 months after you posted this video, Haiti is struck again by another deadly earthquake and suffering a lot. as a fellow Caribbean islander living near a tectonic fault, this is continuous fear we have.
The corrupted government of Haiti is one of the major reason why the death toll was so high. This actually was also the case for Tangshan earthquake in 1976, when Chinese government deliberately hid the truth from the world and its own people, severely impaired the rescue efforts. In the end, a quarter million people died and 200000 were amputated.
After the quake, I met a professional news photographer who had just gotten back to the US. She let me scroll through her photos and the stuff you see on the media about this earthquake is very tame.
Hundreds of skeletons emerging from from rubble and millions of rats chewing on them. They were the most horrific things I've seen, even worse than Disney Star Wars. Awful stuff.
I feel like the media SHOULD show dead bodies and things like that. People don't know how horrible war and natural disasters really are until they see a corpse

I am Dominican and I was 13 years old when the earthquake. I had teachers and many Haitian schoolmates, who lost their relatives, it was horrible.
By the time international aid arrived (which came through the DR because there was no way to effectively deliver aid to Haiti), we Dominicans were already giving aid from day one. I remember that my father, along with some coworkers, made weekly trips for more than 3 months to Haiti, bringing help that we gathered in the community every day.
My dad told me that still months after the earthquake, bodies had been piled up decomposing in any corner. They even had to stop making aid trips because there were gangs that started attacking the trucks, and well, they were just unarmed civilians. It was a very sad situation.
Although there were many people talking stupid things about why more disasters happened over there than on the other side of the island, the truth of Haiti's misfortune is that it has paid dearly to be the first black country to abolish slavery and become independent, and those guilty of that also want another third world country to bear the disaster that they caused and continue to cause.
Dominicano de apellido mieses.
A little bit off-topic, but the history of how Haiti became a sovereign country is fascinating and probably kind of unique. I had never heard about it before.
Yeah, guess it's just like other histories that were hidden by our colonial masters. To this day, many French colonial countries still remained poor because of those reparation payment that some still have to pay, yet many people ignorantly blames the African for being poor as if it's their own choice Their diamonds and gemstones still got looted and their wild animals still got hunt by western countries that somehow can produced license to operate over there. I lived through a 7.1 earthquake in California in 2019. It was terrifying and caused a lot of long-term anxiety in a lot of people. Several dozen people lost their homes. But a number of factors kept the damage from being extensive. The earthquake struck right next to a small city that is not densely populated and has few multi-story buildings. Also California is noted for having exceptionally good earthquake building codes. For me watching footage of Haiti, I remember the feeling of my quake but imagine that in a very dense, urban sprawl with a lot of cheaply made buildings. That's scary.
We're not even a full 22 years into the century yet...
crazy this popped up on my recommended right after another earthquake
Just saw the vid today and heard that a new earthquake just accured minutes ago, what a terrible misfortune
Sad that this popped up in my feed, no doubt because it happened again.
He blamed it on the poorly constructed shanty towns but if 80% of the hospitals, schools, and government buildings collapsed thats just poor construction in general. You'd expect government buildings to at least have sound building practices.
Another 2 geological factors you failed to mention
1) the capital is constructed mostly soil between 2 mountain ranges (stone), the density of soil is lower than that of stone thus the seismic waves would travel easily in Soil and bounce back once they meet stone, so the earthquake's strength was amplified in that area
2) the soil on which the capital was constructed also has a shallow water table and the shaking of the ground caused an effect known as liquefaction where the the ground becomes extremely unstable, basically at the scale of buildings the ground beneath them suddenly became like quicksand
otherwise, nicely done!
Had no idea how catastrophic the geologic setup was. Knew that the area was built on sandy soil, but not that the bedrock regions were arranged in a way that it ricocheted and amplified the shock-waves in that sandy soil area. Thank you for this.
@@Gamedraco Look at earthquake in Kobe, Japan and Palu, Indonesia. Both were devastated because of the soil liquefaction even though the earthquakes were not that strong. The videos from Palu earthquakes shows how terrible the soil liquefaction works, many villages were buried flat under the ground, and the ground itself were moving like waves and swallowing everything in its path. I lost hope after watching those footages coz they always say run inland when there's an earthquake but then that happened inland. The Palu earthquake also caused 10m tsunami waves but it was by an underwater landslide.
Great video, as always. Thank you for reminding everyone of the horrific nature of this event, explaining in awesome detail how it happened, and, even better, telling us what is going on there today. It's not just a past event, but an ongoing humanitarian tragedy. Great job, my friend!

Aug 14 2021, today another 7.2 mag earthquake strikes Haiti . Prayers and condolences to all the people in Haiti and to all that was affected by this terrible event. Here is California I remember the 6.9 mag. Loma Prieta earthquake. 🙏🏽
There was also the fact that the french were absolutely brutal colonizers who abused and destroyed the land to get as much money as they could from it and they treated the slaves so poorly that they overthrew them and murdered them all. It's a complete opposite from the other half of the island where the slaves and colonizers integrated and they were treated significantly better. The land, economy and a new inclusive culture developed and the country is in a much better state for it.
I'm dominican and I remember this awful tragedy. And I kid you not but we just felt an earthquake here in DR, just now.

People love saying "oh but it was so long ago" when talking about the ghost of slavery or injustice of the past that still haunt us today.
You just need to point to stuff like this. Haiti was essentially plundered and ostracized for a long time. You don't just recover from that over night.
I’m fine with discussing slavery. The problem is when you blame people because of their ancestry, that’s when it’s no longer about discussion and more about attacking
@@haltdieklappe7972 Which is a fair point of discussion, but I believe people conflate acknowledging that our ancestors benefitted from slavery with being blamed.
Most dialogue, at least from my viewpoint, seems very much in good faith. Yes, of course there will be someone who blames the people today for the crimes of their ancestors. There'll always be some kind of exception to this or that. But the main talking point, again from my perspective, has always been that we may not be guilty for what they did in the past but we do benefit in some cases from their crimes/sins.
@@Mahbu Your talking points are wrong and based on severe misconceptions about history and economics. No one but a few benefit from a slave economy and certainly not society as a whole. The subject is far too complex to address in a comment but since you seem sincere (though misguided) I suggest that you search Thomas Sowell on youtube and learn from a real academic rather than such ridiculous nonsense like what reallifelore presented in this travesty of a video. Pure cringe.
@@andreasnordon4484 Uh, in what way am I mistaken?
You're being vague and plugging someone else.
How about you make a case other than saying "ur wrong, lulz".
The United States benefitted greatly from forced labor and chattel slavery. Its impacts are still felt to this day.
@@Mahbu You're mistaken in that everything you've said is wrong. Did I not make that clear?
If you are actually sincere about the subject and wish to know more then I gave you a source to learn real history rather than political propaganda.
I'm not going to produce an hour long documentary or write a book and publish it here just for your benefit. I'm retired from academia.
Don't give me attitude with 'lulz' nonsense, kid. I've been decent with you and refrained from insults.
The south was and remained poor while the north developed. The reason is slavery. There was no benefit to it besides a life of luxury for a select few. The 'slavery built america!' nonsense is nothing but nonsense. Slavery kills the economy.
If I'm mistaken and you don't have the brains to learn at a higher level then go on your merry way and enjoy some ice cream or something. Otherwise go learn and get back to me when you're done and we can argue any point you want to then.
Got a huge case study exam on this tomorrow

Say something about earthquakes for the sake of this video.
@@yumm186 the one hundredth video is comming soon!
I went down to Haiti twice after the 2010 earthquake helping out with medical/triage clinics. Very humbling to see the damage firsthand
It’s si frustrating seeing how bad infrastructure and lack of control can destroy hundreds of thousands of lives, in 2014 in mi city in Chile there was a 8,2 earthquake that killed only 7 people and only a few hundreds were displaced. My heart goes out to every Haitian having to live that nightmare all over again
I love that you talked about chile, although I would've used the chile 1960 earthquake for reference, since that was a 9.6 magnitude earthquake, and lasted 10 MINUTES. Even that just killed like 6000 people, so it would've made a better comparison to explain how this was more devastating, even though it wasnt as strong.
i came here after another 7.2 has hitted Haiti again yesterday on 14th August

Finally! 😂😂😂
"THIS VIDEO WAS PRODUCED BY ME"
LITERALLY HILARIOUS HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
I was sitting in chemistry class in 2018 when the 7.1 earthquake struck Anchorage Alaska. We rode it out and called it an experience. I never realized that it could do so much damage when the building codes can't match.
And this is basically a GCSE Geography case study
