Thanks Alister, I think you should do more of these looser "lets sit down and have a quick conversation" type videos, I really enjoyed this format.
For sure, I enjoy them for their honest
I'm barely a happy person. I struggle with depression and anxiety myself from my divorce and what led up to it. I do have moments of happiness. I'm a self taught photographer. When I learn a new technique or a new way of editing, and then I'm successful in implementing it, that makes me happy. It's like going fishing and carrying a big fish that's bigger than any you had ever caught before. And that's what brings me back time and time again. I don't think you ever stop learning. I think we just get lazy or complacent with our work. Maybe burnt out. One of the benefits of being single is that I can grab my camera bag and head out the door on a whim without having to check in with someone else to see if we have plans or to ask if it's ok. I plan my own vacations for me now. I'm trying to stay positive so there's room for happiness. I'm 52 now. I don't see me ever getting married again but I'm somewhat open to the idea. I'm just not looking for it. I got into photography 5 years ago. It's one of the best hobbies you can take up. It will let you a lifetime as long as your eyesight is good.
I’ve really enjoyed shooting black and white, mainly square format images over the last year or so. I find it very freeing, as you don’t need much in the way of camera gear and can find images in the most unlikely places. I don’t restrict myself to only black and white and I will still take a colour images of something jumps out. But just go out for walks, often not travelling that far from my house and just see what I come across, having a lighter Fuji system I can just throw in my bag does help. Honestly feel I get more images I like than on dedicated photography outings where it’s easy to get caught up in expectations and inevitable disappointment 😊
I love taking photos!
I go for a walk and if during that walk, I see something of beauty or wonder, I will capture it.
My parents were both artists and art teachers and they were constantly pointing out such things, so much so that I
ended up as a three or four year old walking around and pointing, constantly saying "look at that"!
I think I've been stuck in that mode ever since!
The experience in the landscape is what I go for. At school I didn't pay attention, my mind was always at sea, sailing
and the countryside. I have much the same relationship with processing. I unashamedly use Photoshop Elements
and only know a fraction of that! Does my final image suffer for that? Maybe but I'm not going to lose any sleep
over it!
As long as my photos convey my vision I'm happy.
As far as story goes, I've never taken a photo in which I didn't want to convey something.
Every photo I have taken is a pixel in my understanding of photography.

I started landscape photography as my retirement hobby in 2020. I was so naive, I thought I could go into my local overgrown woodland and come out with an image that rivaled Simon Baxter. Oh well, these days I go out with no expectations and come home a lot happier!
Allister I have just one request from you: please take that guitar and play the opening riff from Limelight in your next video.
The answer from me is YES! I enjoy all aspects; going out to capture an image of what i see and then refining it in LR. The one thing i need to do more is PRINT, the final stage of creating a piece of photographic art. Thank

I do enjoy these heartfelt posts. I have answered your question many times over the years. I’m still out in nature sometimes to photograph, sometimes just to be in nature.

What a great message Alister. The question am I enjoying myself is at the heart of why I go out and shoot. I do think we have goals when we go out and often we become disappointed if the conditions are not what we desire but at the end of the day, having fun is what its all about. I am getting better at this as I shoot more for my pleasure and not for others. I also find when I am behind the computer if what I am trying to do with editing is too hard then it often takes the fun out of the process. When I get back to being more simple and just using the techniques I have learned and focus on creating work I am pleased with then I am the most happy. I like the way you have made me think of my photography. It’s refreshing to hear your perspective which is so different than many other vloggers today. Thanks for this content.

I was told by someone smarter then me that if I don't like spending time behind the computer, chose to take better photos to start with.
Another great video Alister, it is so true and I see so many new photographers and pros struggling when all they need to do is ask themselves those few little words. now when I go out I have a idea of what I want but I set that bar low, then when I'm out I spend my time looking and slowing down so I enjoy it for myself and also start to see even more things. Also doing an area I enjoy is highly important.

Charles Bukowski often said that we try too hard when what we really need to do is be open and wait for it and grab it (inspiration) with both our fookin hands. His epitaph is Don’t try.
Another great video, Alister. Really good insights and questions. I always say that the main thing, which is related to your question, is to enjoy the present moment, the now, whatever you are doing, be present, be aware, have a child's curiosity, explore. I think the more open/aware/connected we are to our environment, the more we enjoy it, and consequently the more we enjoy our photography. Thank you for this video
I love being in nature. It's saved me. Picking up the camera (and putting down the paint brushes) also saved me. No matter the photographic outcome, if you're enjoying your soundings, it's all good. I also very much enjoy taking my photographic "haul" home with me and working in Lightroom. It's been shown that even just looking at nature photos can have a positive effect on mood. So in nature when the sun is up and in the evening working on photos -- pure joy. It's just the best way I've found to spend my time/life.
Love the honesty in your messages, Alistair, and this one in particular. And, a personal preference, I much prefer the homely background of your study rather than the flat and unengaging black screen. All the best.
The first thing for me it's to enjoy to be where I am if it's not the case I need to move to something else. Creativity will rise when I'm alive in a place where I want to be and embrace all my emotions with joy the joy to be alive. It takes me 45 second to write that 😉

One of my favorite photos came after climbing a portion of a mountain near Salt Lake City, Utah. The image was sound with a nice foreground, a lake in the middle, and a pleasant sky to finish off the image. What made the photograph was my two grandsons and their dad making the climb with me which may explain why the photo has extra meaning for me.
These video’s are so inspirational and important. That ‘older’ video 2 years ago reignited my joy in photography again for which I am still grateful. Although about two months ago I lost it, but I found the problem soon, which was overload by social media. Without your video’s I think it would take me longer to find the solution and for me that is the true strength of your video’s. Bringing awareness and inspiration about why I/others photograph. I really enjoyed this video and it resonated with me. I recently went to Devon for a break and to take some photos. The weather was awful and I couldn’t convince my husband to go out in it. We did go for the odd drive and I took some lovely photos of some beautiful trees. I came home a happy photographer. This week I took a photo of the moon from outside my house. Again, I’m thrilled with how it turned out and the experience I gained. Little expectations are ok. More of these videos please.
Hi, I just stumbled across your chanel. Really thought provoking video. I have often struggle with the 'why am I taking pictures' question. But I am slowly becomming comfortable with the concept that 'because I enjoy it' and can sometimes come back with a keep sake of a memory, is enough. I've been taking pictures, as a hobby for nigh on 40 years now, and seem to drift into and out of 'love' with photography over time, but always seem to come back to it with renewed vigour.

This is a great video and made me think about my photography journey. I first became interested in the 1960s because of my Dad. I moved away to attend university in 1971 and my dad gave me one of his cameras. The journey to create images began. I fell in love with all aspects of the process from bulk loading film to processing, printing, mounting, and the never ending talking about photography. I helped the photography professor with his classes and instructed many on developing film and making prints. Through this period I got two university degrees, none of which had anything to do with photography. Even after decades of working I still always fit in my photography. Did much..had shows, learned to process slide film, and even tried Cibachrome printing…ok, that I didn’t enjoy. I use digital now, but also 35mm and medium format film. It is the entire creative process that drives me. I really don’t care what others think of my images. I do it for myself. It is one of the best and most satisfying experiences I know of…and, if others appreciate what I create then that is a bonus. What is most important to me is that it makes me happy. I do have a craving for getting back into large format film photography but so far I’ve resisted the urge. Having enough fun with what I do now. Thanks for the video. Made me think

Great message and such a simple thing to do. Managing expectations (in any endeavour) can be the greatest challenge. Case in point, on the hike I did today it looked like we wouldn't get any views from the top, but reframing the trip as being about the experience more than about the views completely transformed the morning. Am I enjoying this? Absolutely! It turned out to be a fantastic day, despite the lack of views, as other photographic opportunities presented themselves, opportunities that actually offered far more interesting photographs than had it simply been a nice clear day.
The phrase "finding beauty in small details" really resonated with me - those are the days that can be truly the most enjoyable. (And I'm sure Sarah Marino would agree!)

Excellent! This really resonated with me. I really struggle with sitting at the computer for processing. I don’t enjoy it. Years of work have piled up. However, I processed those years this week because I was quarantined from Covid and have a great body of work for my portfolio now. And the photos are not perfect, but I just found a flow to make simple adjustments and go by feel. Thank you for your always wonderful encouragement and authenticity!

Persistence and patience are prime ingredients for landscape photography. Simply enjoying the experience, being outside in the elements, taking in, seeing and learning from whatever landscape we are in should be part of the fun of photography. As a new subscriber to your chanel, I feel deeply addressed by your empathy and how you encapsulate philosophical thoughts on photography. I feel like invited on a journey to myself. Landscape photography helped me to enjoy every day and ALL weather conditions, no matter if its chilly, foggy or rainy. Photography helped me to go out when others hide themselves away. There is always a reasonable chance to come back with pleasing results. This is a gorgeous experience and makes me feeling good - as long as I don't have the undue expectation to make THE photo of my life or to make a better photo than a known professional. When I look back from time to time, I realise that my photography became better. This also pushes me and gives me joy. Thank you for the amazing content of your videos!

Yes, Yes, Yes, this is me. I really struggle with processing and playing the imitation game with other photographers because I think that is what I am supposed to make mine look like. The images of mine that I love the most are the ones that take me five minutes to edit and I feel confident with them right out of camera pretty much.

I guess that I'm lucky in enjoying the whole process of photography - including editing. It's too easy to start a shoot with preconceptions. My most enjoyable and successful experiences are achieved by being open-minded and being prepared to immerse myself in the environment and to be receptive to possibilities that appear in the moment.

A profound message
As always, you take license to roam within the vacuum between my ears. While you delve eloquently into the topic of happiness in what you are doing, you stop shy of the relationship a photographer might share (+ or -) with his gear (e.g. kit). Pepe Romero, the elder classical guitar master on the world stage, was asked about his relationship with his guitar. He responded ernestly, and like you with a soft and lilting accent, that he saw it neither as a tool nor an instrument. When he opens the case in advance of stepping onto the stage, he sees it as anticipating those moments with an old friend and together they are going to party. And when the evening is ended, they have enjoyed the party and all of its happenings and quirks together. Now that, my good friend, is the definition of happiness in doing what you do. Just a thought.
I am truly honoured by your comparison, but you’re right, we get it all wrong with photography when we talk about mastery and capturing. We should be releasing and freeing. So much wrong with contemporary photography ❤️

Hi Alister you ask am I enjoying my photography the answer is yes.Now ask when was the last time I went out doing what I love well it was just over twelve months ago see I suffer with Vertigo and about a year ago it started to get really bad so I stopped going out but am I giving up no chance in the last year I have bought a second hand Canon 5D MKII and sent it to Romania to get it converted to I R. I have also bought the Kase magnetic filters also a magnificent Kingjoy tripod and a Move Shoot Move star traker so there you go I have a hurdle to get over and I will do it. I sure I can hear my cameras calling me and really trying the call sooner rather than later be happy guys I am . Barry
