    Looking at these forms of democracy, neither women or foreigners (not to mention slaves) were considered citizens and so could not vote, so do you think we can still consider them democracies?

      I'd say for their time yes.
      Universal suffrage is a fairly new idea. It's only been 57 years since everyone gained the universal right to vote in the US and we're still working out all the bumps to the ideal that is democracy.

      Hello Kelly and WHE team. I frequently comment, and Ive purchased a couple of shirts from your website store but I dont know where to ask you questions/requests for future videos.
      Can you make a video about the Assyrians and Britain during World War 1. I have done some research and learned that Britain asked the Assyrians to assist them in clearing out Mesopotamia with the promise to award them a region once the war was over. The Assyrians did their part, but Britain did not stay true to their word.
      Thank you in advance! As I always say, WHE is one of my fav UA-cam channels and I love your website.

      Yeah It was, but they hadn't the same definition of citizenship than we have now.

      Like saying we shouldn't call the earliest telephones by the same name because they don't have all the features present day phones have.

    your vids just completely saved my life, concise and well versed. I'd suggest a video on the greek archaic period since you don't have a video on it yet. But your website was great too. Thanks

    Did democracy get corrupt or is democracy inherently corrupt?

      I don' t think any system is inherently corrupt. People are the flaw of any governmental or economic system.

    The Roman Republic was never a democracy! The claims in this video are therefore very misleading. The statements are based on the work of Fergus Millar, which is today widely discussed but refuted by historical research. Furthermore, the American constitution is based on the 6th book of Polybios, in which he describes the Roman institutions, but does not declare them as democracy! The people had an important part in Rome but rather as an arbiter, which intervened in intra-aristocratic competition. If a term must be chosen, then that of the Meritokratie.

      Incorrect. The Roman Republic was a type of democracy, in that citizens had some influence on government. Not as much as in Greece, but probably more than we have in the US today, and we are (or at least were) a representative democracy, as well as a constitutional republic.

      Governments fall under the umbrella of Democracy and Autocracy. Republics fall under Democracy.

    Just the first sentence, paraphrasing, Greeks and Romans developed democracy independent and without influence from each other. Repeat that again.

    No go read about :
    Primitive democracy theory by Jacobson
    It was the first emergence of democracy in Mesopotamia 🥺🥺

    • @tedmink7568
      @tedmink7568 2 роки тому +2

      Primitive democracies are obviously different and are not related to this. In a nutshell, a primitive democracy usually takes shape in small communal villages when there are face-to-face discussions in a village court or with a leader who has the help of village elders or other cooperative members.
      Athens and Rome were the first large scale democracies and were vey new to the Ancient world.

      Propaganda. Trying to discredit Athens. First people to vote were in Athens. Iraq in the 21 century don't have freedom of speech. You get arrested or tortured.

    I love your work, but democracy was actually invented by the Sumerians and the Greeks copied it from them. See • Kramer, S.N., (1956) 3rd revised edition (1981), History Begins at Sumer: Thirty-nine Firsts in Recorded History; University of Pennsylvania Press, Philadelphia, p29.

    • @johnk4433
      @johnk4433 Рік тому

      No, the Sumerians didn't have democracy. The oldest voting machines are Greek. Stop the propaganda.

      Even today in Iraq you get arrested if you say something against the government.

    • @johnk4433
      @johnk4433 Рік тому

      You don't realize how new democracy was at the time of Athens in fifth century BC. The Sumerians had kings who had absolute power. If you said something against the king on power they'll put you torture. It's still like that in that part of the world.
