I have loved every single step of this process. I started struggling to let go of things around the time my dad passed away in 2012. Prior to that I had been a very organized person and I decluttered and sorted our belongings regularly. 6 months before our dad passed he had a stroke and was moved into a nursing home with vascular dementia. I travelled to my dad’s house, along with my 3 siblings and our partners, to clear his belongings and prepare the house for sale. (Also, our mother had died in 1988 of cancer at the age of 38 and we didn’t have many of her belongings to remember her by) My 2 sisters are extremely unsentimental and were happy to just dump EVERYTHING - not even send things for donation. They were throwing boxes, drawers and cupboards full of things away without sorting through them. Dad was a very organized person, so sorting his things wasn’t difficult, they just didn’t see any point. Our dad was still alive and these were HIS things. I found it so disrespectful. I ended up locking myself in a room to go through as much as I could to be sure nothing important was being thrown out and was ridiculed multiple times over the weekend by my sisters. They had only allocated 48 hours to sort and clear out a lifetime of our dad’s belongings and when it got to his garage we ran out of time. Many of my favorite memories of my dad were spent camping, fishing, doing diy and learning how to use tools in his shed. I knew these things were very important to him. My partner and I ended up loading up the whole contents of my dad’s garage plus the items I saved from his house and travelling back to our home state with them. It took me 7 years before I could properly sort through his things and decide what I wanted to keep. The trauma of that weekend also triggered something inside me that made me fear getting rid of things, to the point of feeling physically ill. Over the past 3 years I have been able to let go of things more and more, and each time I go through the decluttering process it gets easier to let go. One of the things I still struggle with is my children’s old toys. That is a work in progress and I have allocated a large tub for each child plus one tub for things I want to save for future grandchildren and that has helped me to prioritize what is really worth keeping. I have one box of sentimental personal items for myself and each of the children too. We are currently renovating our home from top to bottom and have our belongings in storage - we are determined as a family that only the things we truly want to keep will be coming back into the house and the remainder will be donated, sold, given away or dumped. The only “storage” we will have will be one long set of shelves in our garage as our basement is a finished room used as a music space for our boys and their band mates to rehearse and jam.
Pepper is such a good girl. She must be such a comforting companion while you sort through your papers. The pictures you drew are great-I could never draw like that!
I'd love a hubby declutter update! We haven't seen the garage or any of his spaces in awhile :) I know he's not as big on filming his declutters, but it'd be cool to hear updates on the boxes of his things you found
Thank you for these videos they are helping me and I'm enjoying watching them I have ADHD and Anxiety and I have panic attacks sometimes and I have been decluttering stuff around are RV I have been gave so much clothes and had some of my own that we can't get in are bedroom so we are sleeping in the living room right now so I'm trying to go through the totes and bags of stuff and it is very overwhelming for me but I'm doing what you said do a little at a time and stop if it becomes to much yesterday on October 2,2022 I'm happy to say that I got through a tote a under the bed tote and a small box of clothes and got rid of a bag and a half to a friend and a half of a garbage bag for donate and some went into the trash because they have holes and were no longer good so thank you for all the motervashon to do it 😁😸👍👏

I was in high school when 9/11 happened and I felt my chest tighten a little when you showed the poster. I can definitely understand not being ready to make a decision on that right away.

It's good if Ms Heart feels she needs to keep it to make steps in her recovery. However I don't think something being 'a piece of history' is a good reason to keep it. Especially with the connotations this particular piece has. We have museums to protect our history. We don't need to hold onto symbols with possibly negative energy just because they might be 'a piece of history'.
So, so proud of you. You're doing such a great job! Those sketches are beautiful. Oh, and regarding the bugs...Don't feel ashamed of that. This happens in our basement as well over the winter and we don't have a lot of stuff 💜🦄

Have you ever considered putting all the loose things on your hubbys sheves into a bin? That way they’re protected in case of a leak and it’ll be more contained and easier to move around if necessary

Looks so good girl! My storage room is a hot mess express again. I am a reseller in the winter months mostly and I always lose steam over the summer. I had pulled it all out to organize and now I have to clean it all back up and get back to listing. I also am getting back to work since staying home with the kids so my motivation to do everything is going up and up. You also motivate me like crazy

Love your videos, but now that you have so much floor space in the basement, the best thing I bought to help my cleaning journey was a mechanic's rolly stool... I can't stand for long periods of time, so I often do my kitchen work rolling around on my stool. :D
P.S. - Those hand sketches are amazing. If you are up for doing some work, I have a cousin that teaches sign language and would love to have you sketch her name with signs.
