Awesome finally someone lovely, broke out the power tools!!! After 1/2 a dozen vids - I get to the gold***** 5 star video !!!!! Keep up the good work* Smiles, Garth
I think that turnips were the original for Jack o Lanterns in Scotland and Ireland and of course the I of M . Very cute and very creepy will definitely keep the evil spirits away!
Yep they sure were, I remember trying to carve them as a wee lassy and it’s bloody hard, this year as I’m a lot older I’m going to use my dremel to carve one see how that goes 😂
Halloween is a pagan irish/Scottish tradition, it is first dated back to irish land where the Irish pagans celebrated Samhain although the Scots did also take part in the festive tradition as there was travel from the two countries.
@@Appliedbonsa1 Samhain was largely extinct for over 5 centuries when Halloween was started **in Scotland**. your conflating a festival which clearly had influence over what Halloween would be with Halloween itself. Even Samhain was not Irish in any way, it was found in all Celtic cultures which stretched from Spain to Scotland. There is **no Irish literature before the mid 19th centuriy** with any sort of Halloween connection while the festival was present in Scotland from at least the 1600s.
As a child in the UK it was always turnips before pumpkins became so popular. I much prefer turnips for their gnarly/spooky looks. I use pumpkin carving tools on them which work just fine... really well in fact.
I carved my first "neeps" last year and they were not too bad to carve with xacto knife but mine were much smaller. I also used red candles that let red wax pour out of the mouths 🎃🎃🎃
We always enjoy this video around Halloween 🎃! You should consider re-releasing this video for your newer UA-cam fans that may have missed this one. Keep up the great work and thank you! 🚜👍
Great instructional video thanks for posting the tips. Turnip Jack O Lanterns are a pain to carve but do last much longer. I wonder, can you dry these out & coat them with shellac to preserve them? I saw a photo of an old dried Neep carved in 1903. It would be great to keep and reuse these after all the work to carve one
It seems you never know what will turnip on the Isle of Man! I may rhu-barbs hurled against me, but please know I relish horrible puns. Lettuce continue in peas. OK, I'm beeting it.

+Angela U You’re right! They’re traditional across many of the Celtic nations and Scandinavia

Halloween is a Scottish festival so Turnips were all we had back then, its well older than America.

The Greetings in Manx Gaelic for this time of year is: "Oie Houiney - Hop-tu-naa - Sonney dhyt!".

Just an interesting thing to try you can cut a whole in the back instead and then carry them by they’re stems like an actual lantern
Love these! I’ll need to grow some rutabaga (I’m in US 🙂) for next season. My boys would love making them!
i love carving up rutabagas, turnips, and pumpkins!
Thanks for sharing! We are going to try this next year.
Remarkable! I’m buying some rutabaga tomorrow for this
And if you cover the inside with ground cinnamon they smell wonderful
I always carve a Turnip on Halloween 🎃 👻 because of my Scottish 🏴 Irish ☘️🇮🇪 Heritage
Is there a way to dry them out/preserve them for ya know, eternal spooks?
Your supposed to carve and then dry them out two weeks before. Carve a face then watch as it contorts and stretches as it dries. Like an old mummy
Awesome! Happy Hop Tu Naa!
+Victor González Thank you Victor! Happy Hop tu Naa :)

+Jangle2007 Too punny! Hehe
I think I'll stick with a pumpkin 🎃
Love this!
You do know you have to leave them in a cupboard for two weeks to dry out.
Watch the face contort and wrinkle as it dries. Will look like a mummy. Horrendous. Not bad for a tank you got it vaguely right.
No one does that!

UA-cam won't let me watch. I only get constant loading. It's been a month, same thing. Other videos are ok.
