Why Does One Of The World's Poorest Countries Sponsor Arsenal?

  • Rwanda, whilst having one of the fastest growing economies in the world, remains a widely impoverished nation in which 39% of citizens live below the poverty line, as the country looks to rebuild under the controversial leadership of President Paul Kagame.
There is outrage then, in some quarters, at the Rwandan government for paying £70 million to sponsor Arsenal for seven seasons, who Kagame's supports, and a further £7.25 million a season to sponsor Paris Saint-Germaine (PSG).
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at this controversial move, the reasons behind it, and the situation in Rwanda more broadly.

I was lucky enough to visit Rwanda a few years ago. It’s an absolutely spectacular country.
Visiting the Genocide Museum was one of the most emotional and thought provoking things I’ve ever done.
It’s clear when you are in the country how essential tourism is to the economy and you can see first hand the benefits to the population from the tourism. Around Volcanoes National Park there are numerous schools and other infrastructure projects that are almost entirely funded by tourism.
I’m not saying that the sleeve sponsorship is a good or bad thing and I’m certainly not supporting the governments decisions but I haven’t been anywhere else where the benefit of tourism was so obvious to the local people.

The Maldives is the most obvious example of tourism benefiting people. I went and stayed in the capital rather than on one of the tiny expensive islands. Deliberately to see how it benefits the people. Given it is literally the only way to earn foreign currency for the nation. Gambia is similar, but at least has wildlife and mangrove swamps. Rwanda just hasn't got the wildlife, otherwise it would have the tourists of Botswana, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

It was poor until very recently, and is still considered a developing country. The only reason for the size of the economy is the sheer amount of people. In 20 years time when the one child policy comes home to roost, it is game over. Rwanda will be poor still for decades. But it is on the right path economically. I'll reserve judgement on the politics, as it could be a lot worse, as recent history shows.

The analysis below shows that organizations such as HRW are not credible in their denigration of Rwanda. “What Human Rights Watch (HRW) does on Rwanda is NOT human rights advocacy. It is political advocacy which has become profoundly unscrupulous in both its means and its ends. […] HRW’s discourse on Rwanda over the past twenty years has been VISCERALLY hostile to the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) which defeated the genocidal Hutu Power regime in 1994, and systematically biased in favor of letting unrepentant Hutu Power political forces back into Rwandan political life.” This is more fully explained in “The Travesty of Human Rights Watch on Rwanda”.
Clearly those activists have a very UGLY agenda and will not hesitate to fabricate, lie or deceive in the service of that agenda. They will declare living people “dead”, they will bribe “witnesses”, they will omit vital facts, they will engage in underhanded manoeuvers with major media outlets, they will leverage their enormous funds to prevent or frustrate judicial process. Murderous militiamen have been found with instructions to call HRW if they get caught, so that it will declare them “political” prisoners and spring them out or use them as cudgels against the country, etc. Every trick in the book and even off the books, you name it. They will stop at nothing. They are beneath non-credible. They are despicable.

Rwandans are running from their own country and crossing to Ug and Tz bro...
      Reason?
Imagine being a child or a member of a family where if the father or the head says a word.....no one objects even when they are obviously being oppressed...
A home where if anyone tries to object is either jailed and charged with terrorism or mysteriously dies by assassination..
A home where by you can only exist if you are 100% in support of everything done by the head..
A home where those that object to the ways of the head and decide to run away for fear of their lives are hunted down and shot or strangled..
A home where the head brags publicly for killing those opposing him.
This home has nice flowers, well paved walkways and a good looking house that makes outsiders admire and praise the head..
The family members live in fear and anxiety..
The news from this family are well doctored and only the head’s chosen media is allowed to report about any events occurring and the private media companies are controlled with a whip to continuously paint only the positive picture for the outsiders...
      The family members understand that the keys to survival are;
      1. Don’t ever say anything negative about anything or the ways of the head whatsoever.
      2. Don’t even think about objecting to the ways of the head unless you want a ticket to your grave
      3. If you decide to do the contrary, run to your neighbor and live a highly sophisticated lifestyle so that you confuse and make it hard for your hunters since they are obviously tracking you.
      3. Don’t ever open your mouth to say anything negative about the head’s ways on social media or to a journalist..
Have you ever heard of a story of a girl born in a royal family, the father or mother stage manage a relationship with a boy born from an equally rich or royal family..
The two meet and Mary only to find out that the girl isn’t happy but tries to hang on because she doesn’t want to disappoint the parents, she’s living a lonely and miserable life inside a mansion..
She tries and tries to carry on until she can’t carry it anymore and finally she escapes from the home...
Falls in love with another guy with a total opposite social status but takes care of her, gives her respect, freedom and showers her with jaw dropping moments that make her feel like she’s in paradise.....
They are crossing to Ug and Tz because they know that staying in Rwanda is too risky for them....
Two years ago the head devoted to lock the gates so that he can try and out to an end the unending silent immigration of members seeking freedom since they diner have a platform to raise their voices without being clinically eliminated by the head.
That’s exactly what’s happening to the majority people of this country...forget about what you see in the media....

Comparing how much people earn in Rwanda with someone in Paris or New York is totally irrelevant. People in Africa, which is mostly rural can live for several months without having to buy anything. Also questioning Arsenal's ethics in doing business with Rwanda as if the West is the standard model of good governance is just down right superiority complex. The world bank index of places to do business is just one way of saying "the most compliant African country for the west to rip off". Just being obsequious is not the same as good for your people yet any country that fails to comply with western demands will suffer the wrath of negative advertising dressed up as intelligent observations. The economy is growing rapidly and citizens are having a better standard of living than ever before, but Rwanda still isn't considered a "rich country", even by African standards. There is still a large proportion of people living in poverty, the GDP per capita is around the African average (though that isn't really a reliable stat as I came to realize) and the size of its economy is still very small, but I'm sure it won't stay that way for long.

The Rwanda situation is complex and paradoxical. European nations have meddled in the affairs of Africa for centuries. As for the average wages of Rwandan citizens, that isn’t the best measure of wealth. Rwanda has a considerable abundance of gems, gold, silver, and other valuable minerals. The problem is, as in most nations, the wealth is unevenly distributed. That said, if Nations with questionable human rights issues can sponsor EPL teams, all businesses should be allowed to do so. I would love a soccer kit with Monte Cristo cigars on it ! Great report on an interesting & controversial topic.

In my opinion, economic development in a more liberal and democratic country will always be slow as compared to a dictatorial regime. Take the example of the US. The US today was built over a time of 150-200 years but it looks very possible that China might catch up in a space of just 100 years. In a hard fist regime, it is very easy to undermine the people, their working hours can be made longer, working conditions made poorer, and payment made negligible, without the fear of backlash. Any group raising their voice can be silenced. In a democracy, you have to take care of the people first. Manufacturers, or rather job creators do not want to pay too much, so they like countries like China leading to faster growth in such countries.

You need to spend money to make money, the sponsorship is not charity. It’s an investment like any other. I think it’s a deliberate decision from Rwanda to invest in local tourism.
