An Indian has taught a marathon non-stop, no-sleep English grammar class for three days to 60 students in the city of Mumbai (Bombay).
Sanjay Kumar Sinha taught for 73 hours and 24 minutes in an attempt to get into the Guinness Book of Records for the longest lesson.
The current record is held by Elzbieta Malinowska of Poland who taught for 66 hours in June 2004.
Mr Sinha features in Indian record books for the quickest lesson taught.
He began teaching the students on Thursday morning and continued the lesson until Sunday morning. None of them slept a wink for three days, he says.
Mr Sinha told the BBC he was happy at having managed to teach for so long and could have continued for the next three days.
"I have not eaten any food since the last two days but I still feel very energetic. I have a craze for teaching grammar and am still charged up," he said.
Mr Sinha said he tried to keep his sleepy audience awake by asking them to read out sentences, shout out answers, respond to queries and generally engage them by throwing questions at them.
"I devised my own teaching method for this event which is very interactive and inspired by the manner in which Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan engages his audience in the game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC)."
The show is an Indian version of the British television hit, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and enjoys tremendous popularity in the country.
The host, Amitabh Bachchan is known to talk to the contestants and get them to open up despite their shyness and reticence.
Most of the students who participated in the record-breaking event were 17-year-olds from a city college where Mr Sinha is a lecturer. They were chosen after an initial test that included a medical examination. Seventy-two students were initially chosen to participate in the event.
Twelve dropped out during the three days for medical reasons such as low blood pressure and vomiting or because they fell asleep.
The others who managed to stay on till the end admitted that staying up at night was the most difficult part.
Seventeen-year-old Sunil Kumar Soni said he was ready to give up after the initial 24 hours.
"I could not keep my eyes open, staying awake was very difficult. I wanted to quit but my friends told me to stay on so I did."
Another student, Niyati Palkar said she was excited to be a part of the event although it required a lot of determination to stay awake.
"The first day I was fine, the second day was manageable but on the third day, it was very tough to keep my eyes open. However, he made us dance, shout out answers and kept engaging us which helped in our staying up all night."
There was a special programme chalked out to ensure that students stay awake. Their diet was strictly monitored and they were given salads, juices and boiled food to help keep sleep away.
They were made to do yoga and breathing exercises to stimulate their minds and get back to focussing on the lesson.
A medical team was kept on watch for any emergency. The entire event was recorded and the tapes will now be sent to Guinness officials for approval.

The historical event which took place in 2005 was not so easy . And I will say the class was for about 80 hours because from night onwards no one was sleeping eagerly waiting for the event time to start . We all had worked very hard for the grand success. The most risky part was managing 72 students their diet monitoring their health was the most risky and dangerous . 13 participants had failed because of their health did not support as my health was down too because of non stop class and tension monitoring diet and health of the student and afraid of something or the other. I was not involved media because of the above responsibilities. Sanjay Sinha had marvelous energy he could had continued to 100 hrs which I guarantee. But our students were were falling and I was the person who stopped the class
