They need to look at shoeing and trimming effects on foot conformation ( like chronic underrun heels = basically Chinese footbinding of hoof capsules in horses) and navicular " and laminitis occurrance. I gave up on farriers and finally started trimming my own horses and it pretty much FIXED all the "foot" issues in all three of my horses over several weeks to months. Oh yeah, I went to vet school with Tom Teskey 😊

can I test my mare's "inflammation" level before making changes to her diet and turnout situation? (Her hoof walls seem sturdy, no separation, no chipping and no thrush even in winter mud.)

Hi Judy! I usually do the same- changing diet and management to eliminate causes of pain and see how they feel ☺️

@@TheHumbleHoof thanks - so there's no blood test? just "experimemt" with her feed and turnout?

Blood tests are not reliable for almost all major and minor minerals. The gold standard is to test hay and balance minerals to the deficiencies in the hay test. It is not an experiment, you are giving them what they are missing in their forage.

How would one go about finding a good mineral balance for a specific horse?

The best way is to test your hay and balance minerals to your hay test. Dr. Kellon has great resources on mineral balancing!
