  • In this video, we get another behind the scenes look at some of the lesser known practices of the Japanese Carpenter. Japan is a country wrapped in tradition and the art of carpentry is no exception. We get the chance to witness a lead carpenter build a scaled model of a house which is a practice that always occurs in Japan when it comes to building a traditional Japanese house. In the latter part of this video, we attend a ceremony that prays to the gods to help prevent injury of the builders and craftspeople as they build the house and also pray for the safe housing of the family who will reside there.
This was a great experience and an amazing perspective of Japan that a lot of Japanese do not typically see or request for when they build their house.
We hope you enjoy this video.

I have never before seen a ceremony to ensure the safety of a new house and its construction. It's quite beautiful though, and makes a lot of sense in Japan where people have great respect for nature and tradition.

A lot of the time a craftsman has his little rituals that are in fact a ceremony. It creates mindfulness and a state of relaxed focus that gets you through the day safely. Gratitude is a very important part of a peaceful mind.
That was an excellent video. Really enjoyed it. Thank you very much. You are doing a great service to our community doing this.

I believe that as a society in Europe, we have lost a lot by neglecting and abandoning our spiritual side. It doesn't matter what religion it is, I think it's good for human beings to have values and spend time meditating. Thank you for your work.

Christianity pretty much destroyed the spiritual side of Europe, before that their were a lot of pagan practices some are still around but in Germany where i am from these ancient traditions really got tainted and misused by the nazis which leaves most germans to really distance themselves from it. Which is kind of sad but it is what it is.

I LOVE how tradition and spiritual life is honored there...I wish we had that here. See the way people eat there is amazing...a LOT of smaller dishes and smaller portions for a greater variety and culinary and visual experience.

This part of your culture for the preparation of a new house build we all would not have seen it if it was not for your videos showing us all. And I thank you for that 👍😀😀😀

This is something we in the West have lost. We also used to pray to the gods before felling trees, before clearing land, before building, and dedicating our work to them, but no longer. Japan has preserved this which is great.

Houses for the average japanese man is just like in any other developed nation I believe : cheaply made, low life expectancy, etc... But it is nice really nice to see these high-end houses made for the rich, beautiful craftmanship !

Really cool. I like the little ritual of digging and cutting to show the kami the kind of work to be done. I suspect maybe it's to prevent startling the local kami?
Like how you're supposed to talk to the neighbors and let them know about the work and apologize for any problems it may cause and then you do the same for the kami.

Even the workers introduce themselves. That's really neat.

this was totally cool. Thank you for showing us. This practice is sometimes used in America but not often it is usually done in large construction (groundbreaking), and not with such organization and care as we have seen here; it is more like a prayer gathering with the family and the builder. You are having such a fantastic experience, I am so happy for you.
