- The springs of Agia Varvara are a unique riparian ecosystem in the heart of the city of Drama and one of its most important attractions. Drama owes its uniqueness to the Agia Varvara springs. The springs attracted its first inhabitants to establish the first settlement in the area. The springs join Aggitis River that is a major tributary of Strymonas River. Aggitis Rives has the largest riverine cave in the Greece and one of the largest worldwide. The riparian ecosystems are transitional zones between aquatic and terrestrial. They have characteristics of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems that lead to unique properties and a variety of ecosystem services. They host many species of flora and fauna, act as Pollution filters and help mitigate floods. With the microclimate they create they can help reduce the effects of climate change in urban areas and if used properly can provide areas of recreation and education. The above services make their awareness and protection imperative, especially in Drama.
