If it doesn't interrupt the status quo, then by definition is not an actual protest.

When I see extinction rebellion members stop using mobile phones , electronic and gas goods of any kind, mass produced food, anything made in a factory including clothing, fuel or electrical transport, anything where plastic is used either to contain food/drink etc along with any goods made of plastic, then and only then will I believe they are genuine.
To demand anything of anyone you must first LEAD BY EXAMPLE.
Are they willing to do so immediately.

If Extinction Rebellion causes inconvenience, keep in mind its protests are less inconvenient than its main competitor, human extinction: Becoming extinct can make one's day noticeably more difficult.
Call me old fashioned, but residence on a livable planet is very convenient, and the rapidly declining condition of our biosphere is our most important conversation ever. No matter how things play out for our only home, planet Earth, seeing the manner in which this band of rebels have gotten the ball rolling on this long overdue conversation is admirable.

Agree, I think maybe the issue of the possible extinction of most life on the planet is more important than people having travel disruptions for a few days. Maybe they should take a day off and stop and listen to the protesters. Maybe the whole world should take a whole week off every year and discuss this issue.

It is truly scary how disconnected people are. They are concerned about being "disrupted" on their way to work or not going on holiday. How disruptive will it be when there is no food and and all wildlife dies? Where will we "holiday" when the roads are melting and the forests are burning? Mind boggling. Direct action is likely the ONLY thing that will make a difference at this point. Great job by all Extinction Rebellion activists!!!

Tree planting, tree planting, tree planting. FFS. A discussion on tree planting, with expert input, should be dominating the debate on short term remedial actions.
Almost everyone can get out and help plant trees and almost everyone can help look after a tree. Or take care of a small piece of forest or scrubland or wetland. It's just a matter of organisation and commitment. It's something Extinction Rebellion could organise itself with government assistance and expertise.

Alberto Scatto actually we need to do more than go vegan and may not even have to go vegan, the way we produce crops also causes pollution, ie the fertilizers. We need to plan the food economy using technology and experts, to help us get the lowest amount of pollution possible. I think areas of interest around this could be aqua culture (fish farming) urban farming, hydroponics etc, a lot I lack knowledge in because I am not a scientist, however I do understand economics very well and can see that market forces won’t be able to achieve a sustainable food economy even if we all changed our diets (which won’t happen, we’ll have to make people change to a degree although with proper economic planning we could make that change less noticeable and bothersome)
By the way an alternative for those who can’t or won’t go vegan is the Mediterranean diet. I personally have a stomach condition which requires me to try and get high caloric intake from small amounts of food and high amounts of protein because my stomach digests food too slowly and doesn’t empty right, so when I eat vegetarian or vegan i start losing weight and i can’t afford to lose weight because i am already too thin. At least that is the case for me with what I have available in the rural south, maybe in the cities there are better choices for me to make a switch, I’ll be moving to Vegas in January and I plan looking around, because I do take this seriously but I have to work within certain parameters. (I don’t drink milk or eat cheese or beef or pork already by the way) my motivation towards this is purely one of sustainable food economy and lowering/eliminating pollution, not the ethics of eating animals. (I’m a southerner and the way I culturally view animals simply doesn’t allow me to value them the same as I do people, when you see chickens get slaughtered at a young age you just can’t look at them same as someone who hasn’t seen that)

    • @therenegadekautsky1423
      @therenegadekautsky1423 5 років тому +1

First! Great choice in Rupert Read to do all these interviews, he's on-point, gets his talking points out, and says what needs to be said without being gaslighted (gaslit?) by the talking points of the others. Great tactic to get them to agree to some kind of meeting on air! I couldn't stand being on there, listening to them drone on about 'but this might be difficult and unpleasant! Why are you such unpleasant people?' People love to blame the messenger, and what a message it is...

Most of the panel have no idea how bad things will get if we don't do what the guy on the right is saying. If they did know, they'd be marching on parliament.
I love the way the majority of the panelists are pushing the infantile idea that protests shouldn't disrupt anything.

A message that needs to get to the public is how binary this thing is- it's not a case of weighing up a bit of climate change against some degree inconvenience.
We either hit climatic tipping points and our children all die, or we don't.
There's quite a lot of uncertainty around where those tipping points are, so best be careful.
The targets are set by reality, not by politics.
Whether we decide to pay attention to them is where politics comes in, and we'd have to be insane.

    • @LisaNarozhnykh
      @LisaNarozhnykh 5 років тому

Anotherthez Actually there is some land where we can only grow crops that animals eat or can only have animals, to be able to use all of the space we have as efficient as possible we will need a couple animal farms on land that we can't use otherwise. However, from a moral standpoint being vegan is still a lot better and what I described doesn't really apply today since the majority of humans still eats meat and we use a lot of space that we could use for crops we can directly eat for animals instead, so it's still better to be vegan to balance everyone else a bit out.

"So the whole question about this debate is amount of disruption people can tolerate in their daily life."
I actually agree with it. Because this disruption is miniscule compared to disruption that is going to happen if we do not act as suggested.
Compare people blocking traffic with people who cannot buy food, because there isn't any, 10 % of people are homeless migrants, totality and fascism rules, and millions of people dying every day. That's THE disruption.
The current one is nothing. I am not sorry you had to use a bike to get to work. At all. I use bike to get to work every day. Winter summer sunny rainy thunderstormy.

Extension Rebellion's disruption is simply trying something new to potentially get some real results this time. I hope they succeed - for the future of human kind and all other living things!

British capitalism is profit over people, planet and peace. Start with carbon fee and dividend. As for costs, the panel should look at repurposing the military and reducing the work week so people have more time for their climate education and the ability to make changes. In Sweden the transition is being made and has increased their economy.

Removing non-essential cars and non-organic meat are the two biggest things we can do to improve our chances of going zero emissions by 2025.

For me, this issue playing out here is that politicians have had their chance to do whats needed and what a shocker they've kicked the can down the road again and again and are trying to do the same now. Their time is up and they need a kick up the arse for all our sakes. Brexit and this movement have exposed the political class for their lazy, apathetical attitude and it's time to change the game and bring them back to being accountable to the people they apparently serve.

"I don't think it's the RIGHT thing to do." It doesn't matter how it's done as long as it's effective and we get the desired response from governments and MPs. Look at the BIG PICTURE for goodness sake! Think about what it means that people have resorted to doing this: No one feels safe anymore. Did you know it's a human right to feel safe within their environment?

His saying "this is not the way" is ridiculous. He wouldn't be talking about climate change at ALL if Extinction Rebellion hadn't DEMANDED attention to this problem, which governments and corporate controlled news media had IGNORED for FIFTY YEARS.

I find this so crazy. I’m so bewildered by these people who don’t understand that none of this matters anymore if we do not act together immediately. It’s like watching spoiled children whining about not being able to get the Christmas gifts they expected because their parents did not have the money. They are so spoiled and selfish they don’t understand that their parents had to make a serious choice between being homeless and starving to death, yes life and death, or buying their bratty demanding and narcissistic children the shiny new fun things they have been led to believe they deserved. A disruption is minuscule to the global chaos barreling our way. If any of those panelists truly understood the science and the reality of what is happening then this discussion wouldn’t be happening. I am so sorry to the future survivors that we bickered and denied like childish drug addicts while there was still a slim slim chance to fix the problem we have caused. Within a natural system there are unavoidable checks and balances regulating homeostasis. It doesn’t care, it doesn’t judge, it is an effect. What we have been behaving like for countless generations is more or less comparable to the behavior of a virus. A viruses agenda is to inhabit an environment and use it to multiply and cause the symptoms that spread it to other hosts, if and when their host is overwhelmed by the virus, it either dies or develops immunity. Our behavior historically is to spread outward and constantly multiply and consume. We have never accounted for this moment where we find ourselves in what is ultimately the end stage of our hosts disease phase and begin to realize that there is no where else to go. The idea of space travel or our imagination of populating other worlds is exactly the same as what viruses do. But we are in isolation. The virus otherwise known as the human is now being given a choice to consciously evolve, not kill its host, and become symbiotic rather than parasitic. I wonder if the point of us being gifted by nature with such a powerful adaptation as consciousness and insight is actually this moment. Will we use our self awareness to modify our behavior and grow up as a species or will we succumb to our older and more ancient instincts of denial, fear, and avoidance until it is too late? We see how this instinct plays out currently globally in the rise of nationalism, toxic populism, aggression and violence against those we deem lowest in our global pecking order. It’s hard to wrap the mind around how drastically the changes in our current behavior must become towards the world we inhabit and our treatment of those who live here with us. Social progressive agendas have been pushing us forward based on principles of morality, ethics, and the concept of real justice, however they have never put forth a point which I think some religious core beliefs have been more effective at, which is trying to show that empathy and a sense of responsibility for ourselves and others is essential to our very being. Unfortunately the messages are mangled and used to justify our current desires and have historically failed us. We will be reaping what we have sown and it may end us. We will be judged, not by some god on high, but by those left able to understand our species as a catastrophic failure in terms of evolution. Or perhaps we miraculously transform millennia of historically parasitic behavior and enter a global phase of recovery and reparations (literally repairing what we destroyed) by using our intelligence and empathy to establish a truly symbiotic and sustainable world. Tick tock.

Many people have already died as a result of climate change. Not getting on an aeroplane or driving a car isn't going to kill anyone. Believing that we can maintain our current greedy, selfish life-styles and confront this problem without making huge sacrifices is simply naive. When children can see the reality of the situation our generation has placed them in and politicians can't it is only an upheaval in our society that will get us on a better path.....and that will be disruptive. There is no alternative.

Just looking at Nadhim Zahawi's registered interests on Wikipedia. He's Chief Strategy Officer of Gulf Keystone Ltd and has shares in Genel Energy plc. It's not really surprising that someone such as that would harbour such opinions about climate activists. It's interesting that he made ad hominem attacks on Extinction Rebellion activists, but at no point was his integrity called into account on the basis of his vested interests in oil and gas.

The case for rebellion has been made by this Conservative government, and nowhere more strongly than in their response to Grenfell; They called a public inquiry because that is the most successful Establishment ploy for stalling prosecution and kicking the can down the road until media attention wanders off to new interests. Meanwhile traumatised survivors remain without a home in one of the wealthiest boroughs on Earth. So how else should ordinary people respond to psychopathic cynicism in regard of the truly existential threat of climate change? Write yet another letter to our MP?

    A few points:
    1) this very debate would never have happened if XR hadn't put on such a blatant and effective demonstration
    2) "disrupting the public" is the new buzzword, but did anybody NOT get to work that week?
    3) I'd be prepared to trade in my fossil fuel car for an environmentally viable option if it was offered
    4) and finally, we all need to make sacrifices. Paying 5p for a plastic bag isn't enough.

... its no longer about whether society can support/tolerate the disruptive changes that need to be done ... it's about whether Earth can tolerate human civilisation any longer if we don't bring about changes now... Earth is soooo old, in a way we are just guests on Earth. Our civilisation is not the only thing that matters on earth, and without the conditions on Earth we won't have a civilisation, why are we humans so arrogant? We need to start being respectful to our environment. Also why do politicians always seem to have veil over their eyes. It feels like today politicians are no longer leaders whom we can lay our trust upon for the greater good of our society; they are just someone who choose a job where they can talk over us. What are politicians so scared of with making actual changes that will benefit the future of humankind; isn't that their job? I'm sure even if some policies seem radical, if experts/government can justify them in the long term, most people would abide. We need to pick up the sense of community and support in the society, and face this crisis together... There comes a point when it really cant just be about money all the time!!!!!!!
