The Tennis Pavillion by Fernando Tavora. Built in the late 1950's it is a tectonic masterclass, combining modern principles such as concrete beams with Portugals ancient vernacular values such as granite columns, and the tile roof. The result is a building which walks the line between tradition and modernity. It is unmistakably tied to its temporal context but would not look out of place if it where a modern home built today, with it's long, open span and openings. This video reminded me because Tavora was a teacher and colleague of Siza during this time, and they worked on the boa nova restaurant together, another fantastic building.
My all time favorite architectural masterpiece is definitely Casa das historias Paula Rego of Eduardo Souto de Moura. This building is simple - minimalistic yet so striking. I got struck by it's design from the very first day that I saw it. I really hope you make a video on this building one day.
Right now, my favourite building is the Krematorium Baumschulenweg. I was there this summer and the attention to detail in the material and the craftsmanship is amazing. I've studied architecture and was in Berlin with my class to learn more, really fulfilling:) The building was so thought out, and everything came together. Even the phone on the wall by the toilets had the same metallic finish as the doors, the railings and the windows. I felt bliss visiting it. If you go there for a video, big tip is to go upp to the balconyfloor where the organ/piano is above the small prayer rooms. Even there, in the place which is mostly hidden away, the details are amazing and speak of the satisfying details. For one year now and borrow el crouquis from the school library. So to win this would be amazing!!
The Trail House by Anne Holtrop may be my favourite one. As simple as a sketch. Some waves, curves and lines. The simplicity of it make it even more beautiful. The light passing through the interior corridors gives this feeling of infinite lightness and infinite curves. This building is PURE ART
My favorite building is Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic building, located in city of Szczecin, Poland. The building, designed by Studio Barozzi Veiga from Barcelona, received many awards, including the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture in 2015. Even if it doesn’t entirely fits the surrounding buildings, it’s still impressive.
It is hard to pick one out of incountable masterpices out there, but the Boa Nova Tea House, Casa de Chá da Boa Nova, in matosinhos from Álvaro Siza Vieira is a building that left me out of words. The way that the architect plays with our perception of the ocean and how he reintroduce us to the view is amazing. The relative traditional style brought to a hole new level also impresses me a lot. Fortunatly I had the opportunity to visit the bulding and experience this incredible work!
On of the buildings I really like is 79&Park from Bjarke Ingels. From a perspective of building housing units and clustering them the building achieves much more than that. There is a certain beauty in the way how democratic the approach to each of the units is and furthermore the accessibility of light. The video about Alvaro Size is great, really well done. I really like the way how you compose the video. I am looking forward to future videos and now I need to plan on going to Portugal.
One of the best building I like is the Unite dHabitation of Le Corbusier. I really like the section of the building and the way of living in a duplex in any part of the building.
As someone who has spent over 50 years helping design "modern" Architecture my favorite building is not representative of my passion for simple crisp detailing that say the Barcelona Pavilion would represent, but it's relatively near neighbour the Palau de la Música Catalana. I can't help but admire the manipulation of light and the control of complex intricate detailing that produced an amazing fusion of the decorative arts that challenges my own ability to detail.
Thermal Vals, by zumthor , experience of the space is one another level, architecture is simple in geometry, aesthetic proportions , materiality, simple work of art evokes emotions.
My all time favorite architecture is ronchamp chapel by Le Corbusier. He is a legend. The way he created the spaces makes the ambiance sacred and enlightening. The conscious play of light makes it worth the experience everytime you visit.
Peter Zumthors' Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum Caught my imagination from the first time i saw it. It remains a constant precedent in every project. The simplicity and sensitivity of it all, combined with its quiet, calm demeanor makes it such a special design.
Robie House by Frank Lloyd Right. The form of a house made of plans, and the simple and fascinating way of the interior. The 2 spaces created by the placement of the fireplace, and the light that comes from the rhytmic windows, comes to my mind all the time.

Thank you! 🙏 It makes me yearn to return to Portugal for a visit. :) My favorite building is the Hiroshi Senju Museum in Karuizawa, Japan by Rtue Nishizawa. It's the only building that I've thought to myself, "I'd be happy if I died here." Even in the dead of winter, while snow swirls in the inner glass enclosed gardens like a snowflakes in a snow globe, the space just brings quiet joy and serenity with the changing of the light as clouds above mediate pockets of sun in between the blanket of cloudy skies. While architectural design of places I've visited have moved me in different ways, no other structure has had anywhere near that impact for me.
As an architecture student, my "favorite" building changes almost weekly but recently, I've gravitated towards "House with One Wall" by Christian Kerez. The structure seems so simplistic at first glance, consisting of mostly concrete and glazing on all four sides but its complexity is articulated in the division of interior space via the load-bearing wall (which takes a different form on the second level vs the ground level. In my opinion, Kerez succeeded in creating a modestly scaled two family home that seems so much larger on the inside than the outside portrays. Additionally the all-round glazing provides a myriad of scenic views.
My favorite building is definitely the São Paulo's most famous museum, MASP. Not only because of its own beautiful architecture, but also because of its strong and powerful meaning to brazilians.
The chapel of las capuchinas convent by Luis Barragán Pictures don't make justice to this holy space. It looks so simple but the way he uses light, color and scale is indescriptible, and the colaboration with his long time collaborator and friend Matias Goeritz is beautiful and deeply emotional, i've been in many magnificent churches and chapels but no one that puts me in that kind of deeply reflexive and spiritual state of mind that this chapel does. I think this is the best work by him and it's clear how personal it was deeply personal, he even paid for everything himself, and i think it shows the fundamentals of architecture executed at the highest level. If you ever come to México and love architecture you have to see it, it's sadly not as popular as his other works but in my opinion the best.
MAAT Museum, Lisboa (AL_A) Seeing this video reminded me of my time in Lisbon, when I walked along the banks of Tagus in Belem. MAAT Museum is probably my favorite public building because the act of walking onto the roof came so seamlessly, without having to make a choice. This experience of transcending from the ground to a greater height overlooking the river and the cityscape at the same time was just magical. The building was the most apt manifestation of a form that seamlessly merges into the context, an idea that we realize in architecture school, as students since day 1. It also created a strong sense of social and aesthetic value for its context, which was very admirable.

It is difficult to choose a favorite building. I have to go with one that I not only visited, but changed for me what it is like to be inside a great piece of architecture. This was the Cathedral of Brasilia, by Niemeyer, for me, and I really wish that everyone had the chance to one day enter that masterpiece, because I really think it has the ability to change the way we perceive space and the relationship inside-outside.
MAAT museum, the architecture of the building reflects the sound and allows you to hear the sound of the river, as if you were lying on a beach! It is worth visiting just to see the art building which is constructed of white tiles that emulate waves, relaxing and nice!
I always try to make my current project my favorite building. That said, I think Falling Water deserves a place on the top. It is not a model for general building, but encourages us to live well with nature while provide a variety of interesting and beautiful places to live. Unlike many trophy houses it could be a primary house, and thus offers inspiration in a way few other projects do. And keep up the good work. It is a simple yet buitiful concept, that idealizes space, colour and continuity in just one massive span which frames the city of São Paulo in a stratigic location, composing a beautiful addition and contrast to the cities skyscrapers. A very elegant building. In terms of favorite buildings I have been to, that is a difficult thing to decide. I would have to say that my favorite woulld have to be split between two. First is the Tate Modern in London, which is an almost perfect example of repurposing, and then the Air Force Academy Chapel in my town. Colorado Springs, Colorado, which is an almost perfect example of Modernist design.
@@FourthWallArchitecture Yes, they are saying it is going to take 4 years longer than planned. 4 years because they found more asbestos than planned. So they planned for asbestos but there is four more years of asbestos than planned? The building is not the size of a football stadium. It should not take an extra 4 years. It is completely covered by a structure and looks like a large white box now. It cost $3.5 million to build it (about $30 million adjusted for inflation), but it is costing $218 million to renovate.
No question - Alvaro Siza is truly a great architect. However I would like to note 2 buildings which I think are perhaps among the best buildings built in the 20th Century both by the American architect Lou Kahn -- The Salk Institute in La Jolla, California and the Kimball Art Museum in Fortworth, Texas. Both of these buildings are unquestionably absolute masterpieces of the late 20th Century - period.
"Maison Horta" by the belgian Victor Horta, a master piece of art nouveau. It is in fact, an "ouvre d'art" on each level. Materials, shapes, details and light are all combined togheder in order to please the viewer. Visiting this architecture, you cannot resist the tentation of re-drawing some detail, of taking pictures and make some videos. The relatively small scale also allows you to achieve a really high level of intimacy with the project.
Barcelona Pavillion by Mies Van Der Rohe. The simplicity in the shapes of the building and the harmony between the different materials, make it a remarkable and timeless Masterpiece!!
