    Hope you all enjoyed my first strategy guide! Please remember that this is a brand new faction and as players learn and adapt to the badgers, counter play strategies will emerge and you will need to adapt to this. Maybe it will be more important to wait until the mid-game to start delving in order to recover relics immediately. Let me know your thoughts. Let's crack this faction wide open!

  • @nitrorev
    @nitrorev  2 роки тому +31

    Another thing I forgot to mention is why we only put bird cards in the left-most "Move" column. Both the "Battle/Delve" & "Move or Recover" columns have built-in ways to remove cards while the left "Move" column does not. This means if you put a suited card in that column, it will be very difficult to remove (Can only do it by shifting a retinue card and this means not adding any new cards) and can take up space in your 10 card limit. You can avoid this by only placing bird cards in that column and then never having to worry about adding or taking out cards from that column again. 2 bird cards in the early game and then 3 bird cards in the mid-game will give you very flexible mobility that you'll need.

      You should probably prioritize move/recover for your third bird card. That way you have both actions wild.

      I feel like you can get away with a lot if you can consistently dump your hand into your retinue.

    Ok, I just had the game expansion very recently and this is the faction that I'm SOOOO curious of. Ludacris thanks for not only giving a thorough teach on this but you give enough points on how to strategically maneuver the faction. As much as I wanted to learn the Lizard Cult (still yet to have that), the badgers is highly sought for. Thanks!

      The Warlord will make a lot of sense right away and players will probably have a hard time stopping them at first. Badgers on the other hand need a little bit of know-how in order to play well and it might take 4-5 games with them to actually start winning. I just want to give people a head start with learning the faction so they can enjoy them as much as I do. Thanks for the praise!

      I'm so glad to hear that! Theory-crafting and testing which crafting options work well within a faction is such a fun experiment, there are probably more I haven't thought of yet. I really enjoyed making this strategy guide for new Badgers players and I hope to do more in the future once I've put out teaching videos for more factions.

    Super great stuff. Since I can't play on TTS very often, and my IRL group is allergic to print-n-play components, most of my knowledge of the Marauder expansion has come from watching Guerric's streams and tournament games. My greatest fear was being stuck with the badgers in the tournament draft. (now that I've been eliminated, I can rest easy. 😑)
    That being said, I fully expect them to become one of my favorite factions. So much to consider, and with such a powerful point-scoring engine. Thanks for laying it out so clearly! Keep up the good work.

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev  2 роки тому +1

      With even just a small amount of baseline knowledge, you'll demolish your IRL playgroup once you get Badgers to the table. They're also a very slippery faction. By that I mean, knowing how to best police them is also not very intuitive and requires knowledge of the faction and it's capabilities. I might also need to make a Badgers counter guide as well once people catch on to how strong they are when played well. See you on digital, WWM FTW!!!!!

    At 25:10 you say that you would have to spend the card to recover a 3-relic because you only have two fox clearings. I interpreted that rule differently.
    "Recover: Take any number of relics of the same types as waystations there. Discard this card and stop action if you rule fewer matching clearings than a taken relic's value."
    I assumed "matching clearings" meant matching the suit of the card, meaning with a bird card you'd just have to rule any three clearings.
    Also I've been interpreting "Live Off the Land" wrong (removing warriors down to three in each clearing, instead of just removing one) and I didn't realize it until watching this, so thanks for that!

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev  2 роки тому

      The board is written in a way that helps but the Law is much more clear. 15.5.2 III C: There is says you discard the card if you rule fewer clearings matching the suit of the clearing of recover". It's much more clear in the law.
      As for Live off the Land reducing you down to 3, that's a very common and understandable mistake, I'm glad this was helpful.

    • @jafon92
      @jafon92 2 роки тому

      In my case, from the phrase "Recover: Take any number of relics of the same types as waystations there. Discard this card and stop action if you rule fewer matching clearings than a taken relic's value."
      I interpreted the "stop action" to mean that the "recover" action is stopped (meaning you cannot recover relics of higher number than matching clearings you rule even if you discard a card (unlike delve).
      Unsure if my interpretation is correct because it sounds logical, but will make it very difficult for the Keepers to recover 3 point relics.

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev  2 роки тому +2

      @@jafon92 The order of the steps is important. Looking at the law, the first step of recover is take the relic then you score points and then you check for discard. If you need to discard the card you cannot recover more relics but if you don't need to discard the card, you can keep recovering indefinitely. That's what stop is referring to, stop additional relics being recovered.

    "Honey badger": strat works well against all factions combos that lack the WA (the LotH can be troublesome). Get two or three death squads of badgers rolling with a relic each to cancel 1 hit. Don't spend all your energy getting relics. Just kind of get them as you can. Instead, roll around roflol stomping the other factions. With adequate recruitment and a few spare relics you can 1v3 the board with a few early punches in the right places. You will lose warriors to "live off the land" but you recruit way faster than you lose. You hoover up cardboard points and keep the whole board state in an early game state. Eventually you can ease off the pressure and let other people start playing the game, while you actually start digging for relics. At this point you've got a 7p or so head start and your swing round will swing you to victory.

    • @KitSixty322

      Doesn't an early-game lead just paint a target on your back? Seems like the other 3 factions are going to work to target you and undermine your delving

      @picivyvortac2641 2 роки тому

      @@KitSixty322 it can though with honey badger you aren't actually scoring a ton early game as much as you are setting up for major swings while simultaneously kneecapping everyone else. It isn't an unstoppable strategy, just a strong one.

      If you can play the faction somewhat well and the table underestimates you, you'll crush them. That's how it went in the Winter Tournament last year. Most people didn't know what to make of themal but occasionally an experienced player ended up in a game with some people unfamiliar with Keepers and didn't know how to counter them. The Badgers destroyed in those games.

    I now have the new expansion. I did have a bad first game and impression with the badgers playing it blind. I then looked at this guide and looking back at my gameplay. I literally did the exact opposite of a lot of stuff you mentioned. XD The only card I actually made use of was the Corvid Planners. It was because I was grid locked because of my poor decision against the rats where movement and rule was limited. It didn't help that the rats crafted Informants turn one, and I didn't have Saboteurs till my last turn, so it was too little too late. I was completely annihilated with a devastating loss of 12-30, already thinking of conceding long before.

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev  2 роки тому

      Yeah, Badgers can have a very shaky engine but if you know the principles of how to build a sturdy and reliable action economy, they can be devestatingly strong. Similar to birds in that way. Once you learn to only out bird cards in the decree, it becomes way harder for the enemies to turmoil you and the decree is more stable and flexible.
      With Badgers, flexibility and action wealth can carry them very far.

Everyone else found my turns so long and I took till half way in the game to realised I need to speed though cards to use as the engine and I wanted to keep and use them. So would like to play them again. (I also played wrong where you have to discard and sub points on needing number of warriors and camps to recover and delve ) 😊

    31:13 To that end of the Keepers not being a policing faction, after we've played with the faction at our table for a while, my dad wanted to try these guys out, and omg the only thing he wanted to do mid to late game was try to police the Cats which did not go well for him. I mean he did manage to hit them pretty hard, but he also did a little TOO much policing and let me and my brother basically run away with the game while both he and the Cats suffered greatly as he was only scoring points by destroying buildings at this point and drawing too few cards to fuel himself. Of course I couldn't police much at all as the WA and my brother as the Hundreds kept getting his Warlord removed crippling him turn after turn hindering his ability to take care of the Cats, so it is understandable why he might have taken it upon himself to do this, but I think we just didn't understand the Keepers enough until this game that the Keepers do not like doing this and would rather try to play their own game and keeping the rest of the table at bay. Cats would have won if he didn't do it though and I think he was trying to avoid giving me supporters through outrage, so overall the actions made sense but he didn't need to have a vendetta to wipe the color orange off of the map.

    I think the only thing I disagree with is that policing for the table is a great way to earn favours. Very few factions have the policing potential as the Keepers as not only do they have amazing defence, but they recruit easier than most factions (and get more out of it), and their battles are also easier to pull off.
    If X wants you to police Y in exchange for an easier time scoring a relic next turn, well, that seems like a decent way to stabilise the board and gain an advantage later in the game

  • @NormalTheBand

    I want to say that I do not understand why the badgers have reach 8. They feel much more like an insurgent faction than a counter-insurgent faction. I think they play well in a 2 player game, but in a 3 or 4 player game, they do not function as the only non-insurgent faction.

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev  2 роки тому +2

      I agree with you, they don’t really want to entangle with the rest of the table. Similar to the Moles, they want to avoid heat from everyone and do their own thing. Also like Moles, they have the capability to police the table if they want to which factions like WA cannot really do.

    I wonder how the game deck holds up in a Keepers + Eyre + WA+ Lizard game where everyone is hording cards and the discard pile is split in two. Will we see games where the player directly before Lizards doesn't get to draw at all? :D

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev  2 роки тому +1

      That might be an issue in higher player count games like with 5-6 players but I've not yet seen that happen. I can totally see game states where it might be a problem though. I would support a booster pack that brings the deck up to a larger size and gives us maybe 8-10 more card effects. If the deck gets too diluted however, that affects ambush and item frequency, not to mention the appearance of Dominance cards.

    Hey so you said to tell if tunnels helps anybody put on badgers and I used my last game. I used it alot to move forces away from empty corners of the map. unfortunately I didn't really use it for recovering but im sure it would've helped alot

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev  2 роки тому

      Yeah, it's definitely a situational card for anybody but once you've crafted it, the shape of the map becomes very different for you. Before Marauder, it was only really Corvids that loved to have tunnels but now both of the new factions love it because. This is because of their need to be mobile and their limited number of crafting pieces. Woodland Alliance and Eyrie just have so many crafting pieces out that tunnels is never really that important.

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev  2 роки тому +1

      I had a whole section on Maps and faction interactions but ended up cutting it for time. I'd like to play more games on all the different maps before I get so specific. My initial thoughts are that mobility is super important so Winter Map could be problematic if the table is able to build up stacks of warriors to contest rule. Autumn and Mountain map are probably better on average because of their connectedness but Autumn map doesn't really have clusters of suits which is meh.

    I am not very acknowledgeable with this faction yet, I'm looking at the point where you talk about leaving your waystations unprotected rather than decamping. My feeling (it's just that, a feeling) tells me in that situation decamp once, since it seems to me the option of having a waystation available outweighs cutting down from four cards to three, three is still a good number. A second decamp, now I agree I'm losing too many draws. What are your thoughts on that? Am I missing something and definitely wrong in my feeling, or does that hold water?

If you already have 8+ cards in your retinue and some nice bird cards in hand to replace the ones you lose AND it's late in the game and you need to grab those relics, I'll happily trade the retinue cards for relics. But early game with 5 or fewer cards, that loss of long term action economy (especially if they are bird cards) is brutal and not worth it.
