Actually two things. ONE short blow downs like open mufflers. Polishing doesn't do anything. In fact can actually hurt as laminar flow actually cuts effective cross sectional area of the port, a fluid dynamics thing . By raising the exhaust, that hurt you a tiny bit. Also unless u have stuffers in the crank like a 550, adding case volume can hurt a bit as well. Of course it's the "sum" of all the changes that matters. Back to the exhaust, that little Piston Needs MORE time under pressure on those not less if your wanting torque. I cut the cylinder base to get around 0 squish, THEN cut a popup to get around .018 squish in the final form. Gets more punch & effectively adding compression along with lowering the exhaust a bit. Love the video format and enthusiasm :)

I LOVE you Walt! I am so proud that I got you to watch my channel! I have watched and learned from soooo many of your videos. Thanks for commenting. I watched your 555 build up, but I'll watch it again with more of a critical eye. This build I did end up giving a bit more torque over stock, as it holds its rpm better in the cut. I did another video putting it up against my ThunderKitten (ported Echo 4910) with a 22" bar. With all that bar buried in red oak, it was able to hold its rpm and walk away from it where the ThunderKitten slowed down under the heavy load. So even though it isn't any faster in smaller wood, it really holds its rpm in the bigger stuff, acting like a much bigger saw. I was so impressed with it that I went ahead and purchased myself a Redmax 5000. When I port it, I will concentrate on doing things as you suggest to raise compression and keep the exhaust roof lower since I now know that you can't really get any more rpm out of these but you can substantially increase their torque.

I bought a 545 mark II as a farm saw. I cut a ton of trees every year, probably 15-20 full grown oaks and several pines, hickory etc. This saw is incredible out of the box; reliable, strong and manageable all day long

The bottle neck on the 5 series is the air intake. Open up the top cover with big holes around the air filter and big gains are found.

I just bought this saw and kinda had buyers remorse at first. I live in Arizona and this saw would heat soak and vapor lock on me after I would it down. I learned about modifying the exhaust for power but noticed how close the bottom of the can gets to the casing of the saw. I cut the entire bottom of the exhaust off so it was flat, gutted all the baffles, opened up the exhaust port under the screen, welded a flat piece of 20gauge sheet metal, put the screen back on with the diverter so it looks completely stock. There is now about 1.5 inches of open air under the exhaust and has completely solved the over heating issue but most importantly feels like it gained 25% more power. The other bonus is the saw now starts like it’s been warmed up and sounds like a dirt bike. I’m so in love with saw and highly recommend it but only if you do the exhaust mod.

I’ve got a 545 MkI and it did everything I asked of it. Ran without trouble for just over 8yrs. Then unfortunately partially seized, (cracked import boot) unknown to me. The pot was good but had to fit new piston. Runs good but now is a pig to start. Went to a 550 MkII and don’t regret it. But the 545 is still a great saw. I’d say comparable to the MS260.

Great video! I've just torn into a 545 M2. Also noticed the super short blowdown right away. And that the exhaust side of the piston and upper transfers are black. It seems to be a pretty dialled saw from factory with the exception of the what I can only assume to be emissions regulations encouraging husqvarna to choke their mufflers and and re-burn their exhaust gases.

Awesome video man You’re the man for being a man.
A little tidbit of information that I hope may help not you cut out of the cylinder and made flush with the transfers when the piston is it bottom dead center it covers that up and slows down the transfer of fuel Transfer before bottom dead center You can scallop the bottom of the piston lining it up with that same area be sure and take some measurements so you don’t Freeport in my experience you can only take about half to 2/3 off the piston that you take off the Cylinder. If that makes a lick of sense

After porting it definitely seemed a little stronger an consistent but it was so close finishing. But like you first set out to accomplish, you wasn’t trying to make a performance saw, but just a strong working saw with a little more torq. So mission accomplished.

You've also shown well, how a strong smaller saw 50cc (16" or 18" bar) can cut quick through big wood, because of maintaining faster chain speed (with a shorter bar and without the load of larger sproket) along with a sharp chain.

If you have to work in the elements all day every week, just the idea that your saw is ported and you are getting more done than without it is a mental leg-up. You wont run tests like these on the job, so if it feels faster, its done its job. Even tough lumberjack guys have feelings.

    • @novicelumberjack
      @novicelumberjack  2 роки тому

It did end up livening up and had considerably more torque. Noticed it with a longer bar. With the small bar, it wasn't any faster because it could pull it just fine, even in stock form, but when I switched to a 22" bar and in bigger wood, it wa capable of holding rpm better and therefore faster. It pulled a 22" bar as good as a stocker pulls an 18" bar. So in the end, I did get what I was aiming for. Watch my other videos with this saw and you'll see what I mean.

I just ported one of my two 545 Huskys.
My experience is , if you go to 78 Intake ,she comes rich barking out of the idle ,if you let her idle 30 seconds after the cut.
like she´s overfueling. You can hear it at 10:01min.
I went to 100 ex and 78 intake with stock Trans and throw a Red barn Popuppiston in to compensate the less Compression caused of the less 4 deg Ex Timing. She cuts real Nice with s tiny Mufflermod, but i think 78 is to much for mine.
    Please show the Mufflermod.
I Dyed mine like yours and it seems ,that the Cover turned out kinda violett like mine did. Starter is dark black like mine.
Maybe it hast du do with the age and heat that got to the Cover.
Brand new Covers turn out dark black.

Nope I’m not impressed with the 550 100% truth. Why we go with the 545.

I don't do small jobs like that. Far too much time to be worthwhile for me. Try a channel called Southern Firewood. He's a young guy trying to earn a buck and I betcha he'd be interested. He is building me a muffler for my 372 clone saw. I'll show it on my channel when I get it.

Do it. I've always been a bit hesitant of the Jonsered 2252 because I thought I would never be happy knowing the 550xp mkII was out there. Not anymore. Tonight's Wack-Off will really showcase the torque the porting made with this little 545.
