I feel very fortunate living in Santa Monica although in 94 during the NorthRidge earthquake not so lucky for my parents. After the 89 earthquake my parents moved to Santa Monica I was living in San Francisco area going to Berkeley and transferred to UCLA in 95. Luckily the parents were ok but dad said it was definitely worse than 89. Of course he would know having mom and dad survive the Great Alaska earthquake in 64. I’m an Air Force brat so that’s why all the moving around. Dad retired from Edwards Air Force Base in 2007. He passed away in 2014 and mom lives with me my wife and our son. Love SoCal earthquakes and all. The price we’re willing to pay.
I was leaving in the Bay Area during the La Loma Prieta aka the World Series earthquake hit the epicenter was about a hundred miles Southwest from where I live and I moved to the Central Valley and felt the Northridge quake also Andy bizarre thing about this is that a 7.0 7.3 earthquake hit just off the coast of California
@@garylagstrom3864 Uh. Santa Monica is part of LA. 🤨 The whole city is coastal and connects with Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and San Fernando Valley. But we’re higher up and in a valley.
I live in Santa Monica California (Los Angeles County) used to live in San Francisco. My house is new and built to current earthquake codes for California and the office I work in has been retrofitted to current California earthquake codes. I have a storm shelter with a month’s worth of food and supplies in the case of an actual earthquake emergency. I forgot to add the biggest earthquake I was in: Loma Prieta in San Francisco October 17th 1989. I was at the A’s-Giants World Series game! 15 seconds of pure adrenaline and fear! I’m glad I wasn’t on the Bay Bridge and especially not on the Cypress Expressway!
Yep thats because it was in a very sparsely populated region. It was far off the coast of Humboldt county, with the epicenter being over 90 miles to the nearest town. If it happened closer then yeah we wouldve seen moderate damage within Humboldt County. But, its very far from the bay and LA, and 7.0 is only a moderately sized earthquake. The "big one" would be 8.0-9.0, larger than both the Loma Prieta and 1906 quakes. It will cause severe damage if its close enough to the populated parts of the state, but if it happens like the recent 7.0 and hits somewhere very sparsely populated only minor damage will occur. But, in the end, its not the quake that causes the damage, its the after effects. Broken utility lines spewing gas near downed power lines will result in massive fires.
@ the Big One can’t be bigger than a 8.1 because the San Andreas fault is not long enough to generate that much energy. The Cascadia Subduction Zone to the north could
GREAT ALASKAN EARTHQUAKE ON GOOD FRIDAY: MARCH 27TH 1964 at 5:36pm! 9.2 MEGAQUAKE AND TSUNAMI! My dad was stationed here in 64 at Elmendorf AFB. He and my mother were very lucky to survive this. I would not be born until 1968 in Santa Monica California. Mom and Dad always tell the story to me and my two brothers and a sister about how even though the house was destroyed they survived! They were at Good Friday services at the time of the quake: 5:36pm. 9.2 Megaquake!
Superb simulation and it eerily reminded me of how the 2010 Maule M8.8 earthquake was felt here in Santiago. A long, wavy crescendo followed by inmense intensification.
I’ve experienced a couple good earthquakes in California. My first ever experience was the Whittier one…. I experienced the yucca Valley earthquake., later came the Northridge earthquake.
I lived in Samo in 1994 during the Northridge quake. It was impossible to walk across the floor for a full minute. Every car alarm went off. 20% of the apartments were condemned and people had to move out immediately. And tons of people got PTSD and depression afterwards. It sucked.
I live here so I am always worried of "the big one" and people keep on saying it's gonna happen this decade because of how late it has been plus all the magnitude 5 and 4 earthquakes that are equal to 5 years.
I'm seriously doubting this sim takes into account California's seismic construction requirements. For example, that building would not have collapsed like it did.
Many did in lesser quakes, especially if they were 2-3 floors above an open parking structure on 1. Or if the ground liquefied. The shaking is intensified on bouncy clay foothills and exceeded the force of gravity 3 times in the smaller Northridge quake.
This simulation was pretty short as far as the most intense shaking goes. SF quake in early 1900s was 5 minutes. The more shaking, the more building fasteners (nails, screws, etc) pull out of where they were secured. Even on wood houses. Cracks in walls running at a diagonal are giveaway structural cracks.
Get under your desk and hold on. Most highrises will be ok during an earthquake because they were (hopefully) designed to withstand one. You're safer in a building than you would be on the street because of the possibility of falling glass and debris
Very interesting. But, the Newport-Inglewood fault runs right through LA and has the potential to produce a 6.0-7.4 quake. Do a simulation of that and see what the results would be. I'd bet as bad if not worse and historical records indicate it is long overdue for a significant movement.
I'm not into predictions, but I have been dreaming about an earthquake that happened prior to a surgery. Been having these dreams for years in Montana. I am pretty healthy, so having a surgery was just a dream. That was over 5 years ago, and the dreams have been recurring for a long time. Anyhow, I ended up needing Spinal surgery and ended up in UCLA on Sept 12th, 2024. That morning, there was an earthquake in Malibu, 2 miles away. The rest of the dream is terrifying to me. The San Andreas along with the Cascadia erupted starting at the Salton Sea which was split open from the Gulf of California on up. From what I can tell, this happens before Feb 2025. I should be back in MT by then. Before I went to Calif, I knew nothing about earthquakes. By the way, Calif does not fall into the ocean, but it does get split open. The most terrifying part of the dream was all the dead people and the damage. Wow the Damage.
I’ve been dreaming about the big one coming too. I do believe it is coming and this month. There has been a lot of activity lately. And similar to what u said, I think the Casacadia is going to trigger San Andreas or it will be both nonetheless. Either way, I think most damage is going to be in LA. I do think it will be more catastrophic than is depicted here unfortunately.
So is the floor of a building impacted by approx where your floor is located? I live on the 33rd floor of a 58 story. Is it supposed to be more like floor 10 (halfway) in the simulation or would it be more like floor 20? We BARELY feel anything for most with one exception. Usually it feels dizzying, like laying on a raft in a pool. Except when we had a rather small in magnitude, yet fairly strong shaking one earlier this year on the la puente fault. I felt like a kid on an adults knee playing horsey. Bouncing up and down and side to side. it was a 3.7. We have had 4s just a few miles further that felt like nothing. WTF?
I have been living in Los Angeles in Sherman Oaks for 4 years. I work in a design office on the 20th floor of a downtown building. I have never thought about the Big One. I don't thank you 😡
I'd also be interested to see what a 7.0 would do to Istanbul, Turkey. From what I've read, the death toll could literally be in the nillions. The North Anatolian Fault and the Main Marmara Fault (locked for over 100 years) pose significant threats the next time one ruptures. Thke population of Istanbul is about 15 million and most of the structures of the city are not designed to survive the expected magnitude 6.5 or greater magnitude.
The "big one", as has been predicted for years now, is NOT likely to happen in the southern region of CA. The danger zone of the fault line is much farther north. It's likely now that when or IF it strikes it will be along the line from far northern CA possibly up to the Seattle area.

The fact that people in Arizona and Nevada think they'll have a Beachfront home after this. Is interesting. Because once it hits us in Cali. It will take out Nevada, Oregon and Arizona down with it. They don't realize how big it will be.
Both container ports (LA & Long Beach) would be severely impacted. Meaning, all that imported stuff that we used to make would no longer be available. Natural gas & oil pipes that deliver their products to places like Phoenix would be destroyed. The entire country would be paralyzed and grind to a halt.
The buildings that are going to suffer are the older buildings… no matter of construction type. The Newer construction buildings are going to be built to the most current Seismic Zoning. I do know that many, if not all of the schools are built to Seismic Zone 4 which is the most strict construction guidelines. I do know that Cerritos Hills Public Schools was built on big rubber shock absorbers, if you will. There are several schools out there and many public buildings. According to building code we had to take the worst possible case of different natural disasters into account when designing the buildings. There are also “safe shelters” designed into those type of buildings. Now, if we can only make it mandatory to design a mantrap for when shooters try to take the life and get attention that the new is so anxiously willing to give. It easy to do and it’ll only happen when it’s mandatory because it’ll be expensive due to bulletproof glass and shockproof door locks so they can’t shoot their way out.
That’s it, I’m convinced. I won’t be keeping my baby grand piano in the apartment on the 20th floor.
OTOH, I'm wondering why my 5th floor apartment is less damaged than my neighbors on both 1 and 10?
