Well, you sold me on Schradieck. My teacher gave me the Schradieck over 35 years ago. After trying some of the exercises I began to feel that it probably wasn't beneficial if I could not play 16 notes on a bow. Your description of repetition and reinforcement is particularly apt. And , on this day, you displayed even more enthusiasm than your usual -- which is saying something. Wait a minute, my violin is right there in the case and your enthusiasm for Schradieck may be catching. :-)

Excelent video Joy, I will review my Shradieck again. I normally warm up with this first two pages exercises in the book, but I will definitely take a closer look at the rest of the book. Mimi Zweig (a great pedagogue by the way with tons of information online specialy for string teachers) uses also the schradiek book with her students.

Good morning Ms. Joy, just saw your video and will practice later but have heavy other studies to do and way behind. Anyway , I have the book, Schradieck from Amazon..., yes. And the positions I will email what I mean, the positions of finger relative to 1234 and 4321 also the start at the string in up.....,is that the dexterity repertory if practice on one or all the strings? I play by ear always, however, kind of new and difficult to read this music but I like a challenge and learning fast so I agree he was brilliant in his approach to learn the basics. I wanted to comment on this amazing video if yours, thank you for the upload and I am lucky to have saw it today.

Just love how you use Schradieck book. Do you suggest starting with exercise 1 and working through each exercise 1 by 1. I believe all major scales are in Schradieck book or am I mistaken? Thank you so much.

Even though there are many thoughtful, detailed approaches in Schradieck book, I find that one could get tired and burned out if practising in the order of the book one by one. It would be better to pick the necessary parts of each exercises to support your current violin playing skill. Happy practising Stephanie!
Aren't those just basically the same as thoughtful and creative diatonic sequences? You would play in the same manner on the guitar... or any instrument for that matter. No criticism, but I think people just need to be creative with as few notes as possible. Master each section. Don't just break up into 3rds, but also into ascending reverse seconds, descending fourths, up following in sequence, down in a backward sequence... the possibilities are endless, with just a few notes. It's kind of like sticking Rapunzel into a room and telling her "by tomorrow I want you to have written a Caprice, with only 6 notes" ... if you understand music theory and you have a creative mind, this wouldn't even be a daunting task. IMHO, Schradieck is just helping those who cannot think for themselves... to think a little more with his assistance. Use your head along with your ear. Let your ear tell you when you are screwing up, not your teacher and not your hands. Be a creative thinker in all that you do. If you are an artist and a musician, connect the two. They are indeed interchangeable.
Are you a guitar or violin player? I am both, and I can assure you that, on the violin the shradieck exercises are specially good. They are no different than piano independence exercises. But in violin we normally have two more issues. One is, let the finger fall exactly in tune. For that, practicing the different paterns on the same string is specially useful. The other is the fourth finger, (a nightmare for many players in any instrument) has to stretch to reach, as the position in violin makes it even worse. Practicing this exercises, as silly as they may be, help us to develop all that as well as speed; and varying the speed, also the articulation, I mean by that, how fast or strong must the finger fall, depending on how slow or fast we are playing. It is only like a warm up at least in my routine. The other intervals, we normally study thru scales, broken scales, double stopps etc.
@@ladelcolectivo ~ just the guitar and violin? I play so many different instruments that I can't actually count them for you, but they all have strings. Oh, well , there is the Harmonica and a few others. I think you missed my point. You make many valid points about how the fingering on the violin does NOT crossover from the guitar particularly well. At the same time, knowing what you know about the hand, the four fingers and how the violin is much more difficult in its lack of assistance as far as articulation (yes, for most, the articulation of the pinky) and how you use "tetra-chords" or finger "patterns" and often times even think that way instead of thinking in intervals of whole-steps and half-steps or even (Harmonic minor, diminished and whole tone intervals) ... all of this being said, if you already understand that your hand has to make these specific movements to become better acquainted with your instrument and also more proficient, you would STILL and SHOULD still have the ability to come up with these movements and repeated "silly (??)" motions by yourself. It takes a little bit of thought-processing and creativity (already stated) but it should not matter what instrument you are playing or what machinery you are driving or what the shift pattern might be. YOU figure it out as opposed to necessitating someone else's creative thought-processing. How about this: "Do you think Schradiek needed someone to show HIM these exercises? Look at my comments with a different perspective and you might possibly understand the message I am attempting to convey. THINK FOR YOURSELF! It shouldn't matter what instrument you play. Music theory applies to any and every instrument in the world. How you attempt to learn to play proficiently is up to YOU. If you want to hire an instructor, by all means, 'travel as the Crow flies' but don't let them do all the thinking for you. Instruction and Education lead to learning the LEARNING PROCESS which in turn gives you knowledge. Having knowledge is absolutely USELESS until you turn that knowledge into WISDOM. Wisdom is exactly what Schradiek is using in his "silly" little exercises. Hope this helps. It's never a good idea to get into a debate with me until you've made some viable attempts to understand what it is I am saying. You can't just jump to conclusions. It's almost laughable when you think of playing Pagininis Perpetual Motion. Think about that statement for a minute and then apply Schradieks "exercises" to Paginini's fingerings. Do they apply? Think hard, because my answer just might be the same as yours ~

So you tentatively attempt to reply to my comment, only to go running away with they typical "make him feel guilty" reply "Have a nice ... wait "PLAY??" ... well, if you would like to have a "nice play" then STAY and don't be a baby. Talk about the chromatic scale on the violin. Talk about how the size of your fingers compared to someone else's just might make all the difference in the world in a half-step. For example, if you have big fat fingers, a half-step is going to be a chore for you right? If you have talons (like I do) then it is also a chore. Why? Because I have TOO MUCH room for error. Talk about how a chromatic scale is ONLY a chromatic scale when it completes an octave. Talk about how Schradiek might finger this compared to all of the different techniques people use. Have you seen a virtuoso use the 'showy' one finger technique? Don't leave with your tail between your legs. Gee whiz... I'm nobody. If you want me to "play nice' with you, I can try harder. I'm here to learn, not to spend all of my time tiptoeing around subjects that are HUGELY open to debate. Come on! I sorry!!!! ❤️❤️🥀🥀🎻🎻🎻🎻

Thankyou! Very helpful! Can you tell me on the first string crossing exercise it says use the wrist only keeping the arm perfectly quiet, does that mean don’t move the arm up and down at all!? And if so so why do so many people move the elbow like a chicken?

Dear Joy Lee, thank you! I worry that I’m not moving my arm enough because a lot of fundamental teaching methods describe moving the arm so the forearm is at the same angle as the bow, but I find I don’t need to and it seems to be an exaggerated movement, and would make me tired and stiff... my wrist is flexible and if I try to keep it all exactly straight my pronation isn’t as good! Of course when moving on to ricochet spiccato it would be much harder moving the whole arm on every string crossing! Thank you for your reply, it’s very helpful. I am happy violin playing every day and look forward to more of your videos!

I have always played E major with the fourth finger flat; is this allowable?
Hi William. In the key of E Major the notes with the 4th finger (note A and note E) should be natural, nit flat. In order to check whether your 4th finger is in tune or not, you can compare to the open A and open E strings. I hope this helps. Happy violin practising!

peg drops from the violin store. If you don't have acces, try to keep your instrument at the right humidity. In the worse cases, just wet the peg a litle bit before you tune it.The wood is going to swell and it should be fine.
In my country, when we can't get that peg thing at the store, for slipping pegs we use chalk (that one used on blackboards), and for tight ones, common soap. My city has about 80-90% humidity, so we can't do much. When spring comes, and it gets a little dry, the pegs go mad and slip.
