House prices and greed have ripped the soul out of Australia. Even if one buys a place, you most likely have an air bnb on one side, an empty house the other. Across the road is an overflowing share house. Everyone is transient. I want to live in a community not an economy. Gov stole our real wealth (community, relaxed lifestyle) and gave us stress and money. And you right, we can’t even do what we want with our own land.
I hear you dude, i saved for 13yrs and bought acreage in southwest WA, i'm an electrician and going to owner build. The council and the process to build is going to take me a few years, however in the meanwhile i am going through a constant cycle of changing contracts for work and changing housing (i just rent a room wherever work is). its very sad, my family has been in australia since the 1800s and i don't believe i can in good conscience have a relationship; let alone children and happiness in this country. I'll build: rent it out and then travel and hope to find community and peace of mind elsewhere, best of luck to you bud.
I am Polish and have lived in the UK for nearly 20 years. My dream was to live in Australia since I was a kid. I visited Perth, WA, twice and made some friends. My Aussie friends are renting our rooms, unable to buy anything. It is heartbreaking. Maybe it is best to stay in Europe.

I faced the same shock that many face when returning to Oz from Asia back in 2015 but that isn't a patch on what it would be in 2024. Australia is in the early stages of a genuine recession courtesy of China but all the media can focus on is the projected impact on house prices. I just don't see supermarkets and landlords releasing their vice-like grip on our wallets anytime soon, but one thing is for sure - short of 200k more subs, it's unlikely that you will ever be able to return to Oz.
