    I recently drove 950 miles from Portland, Oregon to northern California coming back by a different route. When I got back I realized that I had seen exactly zero wind turbines and exactly zero solar arrays for generating electricity. I did see one hydropower station. Alternative energy is the energy of the future. And it always will be the energy of the future.

      If you look into it, you'll find that wind energy is a waste of time and money... Solar power is okay for home use, but has some serious issues for large scale power generation.

      You should get your eyes checked. You missed the wind turbine in Red Bluff, CA and just outside of Salem, OR. Also there are these things called wind corridors, where due to the natural weather patterns certain areas are much more productive locations for wind farms. There are about 20 NE of Redding, CA; lots west of Hermiston, OR on the Hood River; and tons between North Dakota and Texas. You might want to do some research before you state your limited experiences as fact.

      For solar power the more productive farms will be located at lower latitudes because they have more direct sunlight (and generally less cloudy weather). So yeah, it doesn’t make much sense to build large solar farms in Seattle, WA.

      And yes, it is still not enough to power the entire US yet, but the overall percentage keeps growing every year. We will still probably need nuclear, hydroelectric, geothermal, and some natural gas power plants to have a robust and stable energy mix for the grid of the future, but wind and solar are getting cheaper and becoming more reliable especially as storage solutions are starting to come into play.

    The globe image at one minute in is extremely misleading! It suggests that the pH of the ocean is below 3?! Are the small blue dots the measurements? Then why is the scale shown going down to yellow and red? I would like to see someone from the Cal Academy clarify this so you don't lose credibility on such an important issue.

      Don't be so critical? This is a notation video to the world. What are you doing to make people aware?? I give ANY notice vid an A plus fo telling the world. and it's made in '13, few people then were hollering about the death of phytoplankton from our cars and energy plants of oil, coal and gas.NOW it's sinking in - WE NEED PLANKTON!!

      ​@@garyha2650 At 0:23 she states that CO₂ "can cause the oceans to become more acidic." This is the direction of the trend.
      Can you stand in Greenland and walk southward? The whole point is that, yes, the oceans are slightly alkaline, but increasing the H⁺ ions (or hydronium) ions are pushing them more towards the acidic side.
      Over the course of 30 years (1985 - 2015) the average pH of ocean water near Bermuda changed from 8.10 to 8.06. This may not seem like much, but since pH is a logarithmic scale this ends up being about a 10% increase in H⁺ ions.

    The PH of the oceans are between 8.2 and 8.3 just like they have been since the first life evolved in our oceans! And a PH above 7 is basic not acidic and it always has been and always will be!

      You're dumb. Just because the ocean's pH is overall basic doesn't mean that the ocean isn't becoming more acidic. As the ocean is becoming more acidic it is shifting towards carbonic acid being the dominant carbon species, this means that the important foundational species like oysters and crustaceans won't be able to make stable skeletons out of calcium carbonate due to the more acidic conditions favoring the dissociation of CaCO3 into Ca and CO3 ions. Also pro tip, a small change on the pH scale is a huge change in real life since pH is measured on a logarithmic scale, so a change of 0.1 is an impactful change to the organisms living there and the people who depend on the ocean for their livelihood.

      @@Jonathan-jx6cr you today missed the point! The ocean is quite basic and is the exact same PH that it has been since life first evolved on earth. And that should tell a sain person that the oceans are not getting more acidic and one more example that man has no effect at all on our enviroment!

      They say Denver water is acidic when it is quite alkaline (above 7):
      "This new pH range is between 8.5 and 9.2 ... making the water slightly less acidic"
