Cottage Pie Home Cooked Versus Shop Bought At Tesco
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 чер 2022
- We love home cooked food and in this video, we put Sharon's home made cottage pie against a ready meal from Tesco, their shepards pie. We know that a cottage pie is minced beef and a shepards pie is made with lamb mince but let's see what one hits the spot.

Nothing like proper home made Grub👍
Fully support the cheese on the mash option. This home made version makes a fabulous Sunday lunch IMHO. Always have a cottage pie on New Year’s Day. Prepared on New Years Eve, already for the family when they finally get up, and I have had a winter morning walk to see in the new year. It’s fab with lovely fresh greens veg.
Hi Butlers. Love your show. I bought an air fryer and have been following your recipes. Your channels is making such a difference to our lives. I have fallen in love with cooking and feel much healthier plus we’re saving money plus we’re not eating all that processed muck. I actually feel healthier also.
Keep it up. Tell Sharon we love her. God bless yous and your family. Take care Bud. ❤🙏🙌
Thanks Bobby.
Me too, I also found the food tastes better when done in the air fryer
Hiya guys, I make my own cottage pies all the time, and ye cannot wack them! So tasty and with texture! Not just a paste type meal! 👍👍yours looked great!
Really good video as everybody has their own way of making cottage pie and shepherd's pie.
For the former,I add some allspice to the meat mixture to bring out the flavour.
Serve with broccoli and cauliflower cheese.
Great video - you hit the nail on the head. 12% meat and the rest was flavourings. Please keep making the point that what these so-called super markets are selling crap with very tasty flavours to mask the complete lack of wholesome value. Eat a Tesco pie and you will be hungry an hour later. Eat some Sharon and She will keep you sustained for days!
When I was a child you could only find beef mince, so I always use beef mince and still call it shepherds pie as my mum and her mum used too. I make 2 at a time and freeze.
Love you two, you are so down to earth. You compare simple foods easily cooked . Many products don't look like the package illustration. One of the most misleading is Macdonald's. I want to say 'Can I have one like the picture?' Oh that I was brave enough. Good luck both. Nanny Gail in Stoke.🤩
Thank you so much Gail.
You make wholesome food and as you say the natural flavour of great ingredients like carrots, peas etc are more enjoyable than factory-made food. 👍
So nice of you
Supermarkets looks so much better 🤣🤣🤣. Definitely home made again Martin and Mrs B 👍🏻👍🏻
Well I know which one I would have, definitely Sharon's homemade one looked absolutely delicious 👌
As always excellent vid both
And yes throw some cheese on top lovely jubbly
Looked very tasty. I like a bit of horseradish in my mash pots when making a cottage /shepherds pie. It gives a nice kick. Hehe.😊
The one thing I do when I make this dish is to cook cauliflower along with the potato then mash them together, also agree with a topping of cheddar cheese. One other thing to save even more money is to cook the potato in a pressure cooker, which cuts the cooking time by about half
I saw that bit fly out Martin!!!!!!!
Keep the food videos coming, I’m enjoying them 👍👍
Thanks Neill👍
In our view no contest the homemade one is always going to be the best you are great cooks. Im glad Martin read out the ingredients on the Tesco one as I am allergic to tomatoe puree cheers guys great video .Kevbo&Jackie
This is so refreshing, everyone else would have definitely said the Tesco one was bland, tasteless etc IF they were doing a comparison test. But Martin is honest and says its not bad, which is true as I have had one, so well done once again to the honest Butlers reviews ✌️
Shepherds with lamb cottage with beef granny used to put a pastry top on for the roof to fill us up
Hi folks ,another great video ,I find the Ash in shop bought ready meals is like instant ma's very watery and tasteless ,Sharon youe done it again .Martin is so lucky .
gee those ready to eat meals sound so cheap over there.. The average price over here is about $6 and up for a ready make meal.
Wourcester Sauce is an absolute must. Mayo in the mash. Grated cheddar on top. I also put celery in mine.
I was wondering if you could cook the pie in the air fryer once it's been made?
You've made me hungry again. Gonna make one tomorrow.
Forgot to say sometimes I make a spicey one with lots of fresh chopped chillies in it.
An egg yolk and some cheese mixed in with the mashed potato works a treat. No need to put cheese on top of the mash.
Nah mate cheese on top is best.
I think you need stack boards on that fork lol. We don’t get those ready meals, I suppose they could be useful under certain circumstances but we never use them.
Bought back yummy memories of whn I was younger and live in the LAND DOWN UNDER....AUSSIE....now living in GREECE.............but sheperds pie was a fave of me and my family...double mash to realy FEEL it.............You guys are just fabulous....have you ever made Mince patties...please do...with the gravy sliding down...OH SORRY, I just made everyone DROOL....Keep them coming guys and thanks !!!!!
Not made those, sounds great though.
Thanks for the video. Really enjoyed and am now a new subscriber. Hello from Scotland 🏴
Thanks and welcome
another great vid , thanks i will do that one too , keep up the great work
Have fun
Forgot to add photo absolutely gorgeous even hubby loved it
I just finished my lunch, yours looked more appealing!!!
brilliant as always. im home cooking alot for my gluten free son. ive already made the shepherds pies in little foil trays and frozen them. how long would they take in an air fryer to cook from frozen and is the foil trays ok in the air fryer thanks
We always defrost to save on cooking time, yes the foil containers are fine.
Well done guys if we do it or even sadly buy a ready made wed put a few chips and peas n broccoli on the side .fick gravy on the chips , makes it go further ...keep up the good work
Can u have hafe and freezer the other hafe
Can I make a suggestion? Home made Curry patties!?
Hi Martin and Sharron can you tell me how long the gas bottles last please or how many cooking hours thanks Mary💞
We are not really sure.
Love watching your videos, just ordered one of your little stoves. Where do you buy the gas canisters from? Can't wait to try some of your recipes.
You can buy them on Ebay in bulk.
@@butlersempire Thank you for your quick reply, just watched your homemade chicken curry video, superb.
Tina makes her own don't buy supermarket one it taste rank lol. Also think they use smash it certainly tasted like it lol I have tried them Before. Cottage pie got have a bit of cheese over the top yummy. 👍
Hey just found you :) xx. For the ninja can you put in enamel bake dishes?
Yes Sarah, its just a mini oven really.
Just to let you know the 1 tr glass dishes with lids do not fit in the af 300 would you let your fans know
That looks scrumptious! 👌
So many have it with chips and baked beans. Love it with just baked beans and a couple of slices of bread and butter to mop up!
Me too. Back in the day Heinz used to make ready meal cottage pies with baked beans already added.... Lovely.
White pepper for mash for me , great vlog guys
Hi both , love ur cooking but I can't get Maggie liquid seasoning, I have tried in tesco , than,s both , x x ❤️
Amazon do it.
Hi guys where did you get the Maggie's seasoning from been looking for it every where to try this recipe a know a could use some substitute but a really want to try this recipe great video
You can order it on Amazon Steve at amzn.to/3ufzGXD
@@butlersempire ok thank you for that I am a big fan but dont allways comment keep up these great videos
You bought 25% fat in the mince. there would have been less liquid with 5% fat . I buy both depending on what I’m making . Love your cooking , Made your pasties yesterday , loved them .
I put Maggi Sauce on chips instead of vinegar, I much prefer it. Maggi goes in soups, stews, you name it, even in pepper sauce for steak. 👍
Awwww where was the 'sound' when you was eating 😋😋
I'd do that in my slow cooker freeze and defrost and heat in the air fryer
Looks lovely Sharon
martin change frying pan into a enameled pan lose the teflon ?
Hello you are right about home cooked food being better than shop bought when i are a cottage pie i and a table spoon of tomato sauce in the mince mixture it makes a big differance then i put cheese and tomato on the top we love all your videos from sue and vic
Looking at the home made one, a bit more mash would have seen an easy 3, maybe even 4 individual pies for a little over the price of one. Homemade shepherds/cottage pie is right up their with great wintery comfort foods.
Just a thought on all of the extra ingredients in the shop bought, a lot of these would have been the equivalent of the Oxo cube and gravy granules a Maggi sauce.
I add garlic to the vegetables when I cook cottage pie
Beautiful 😊
Thank you so much 😀
Wish you’d have put it in the airfare though stead of heating up your oven
Use mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes you would know the difference x
Wouldn’t know the difference 👍🏻
We've already done that, we do it on our low carb regime.
Thank you for sharing your plate looks delicious I am watching your videos from South Africa
You could have made two the same size as the shop bought one with your ingredients and they’d have still been deeper with much more meat, veg and flavour (and if your on your own, pop one in the freezer) making each one cost £1.35 😋❤️
Love home made you want to try hedersons relish made in Sheffield lovely on chips and meat and potato pie
I’ve already done that we did a home-made shepherds pie and we bought two from two different shops shepherds pies home-made one is the best even my lot even said it home-made shepherds pie is the best is better than what you get in a shop
There's no comparison and yes to the baked beans.
Heat spud water in the kettle first.
Natural home made food Yum ✅️ To many chemicals in the frozen ready made❌️
Thanks Sharon & Martin xx
Smashing 🥰
Glad you enjoyed it
Maggi seasoning contains:
Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein (Water, Wheat Protein, Salt), Water, Flavourings (with Wheat), Flavour Enhancers (Monosodium Glutamate, Disodium Inosinate), Salt, Sugar
You only use a splash.
Ooh thats lovely, wholesome tasty and cheap, no contest, YUM.
Was a given which one was going to taste best ofcoarse it 110% Sharon's for double the money you can feed two with proper ingredients, thanks Martin and Sharon ( Britain's favourite don't lady ) think Martin should start doing the dishes lol
Massive difference, nowt like home cooked grub...Great vid.
Glad you enjoyed it
Have you tried Dead Sea Salt as opposed to Himalayan? It has much more minerals ~ Dave
The mashed potatoes are more than likely instant. Yours is real potatoes and all fresh ingredients. Plus, the size you made would make 2 of the other
No wonder you love Sharon so much Martin she is a star spot on 👍👍👍👍
Martin, to make it fair why don't you also read the ingredients/ chemicals of the oxo cubes and liquid Maggie ? The recipe does look amazing, I will need to try to make it vegetarian for me tho 😁
Its just the princible of home cooking against mass produced that we were demonstrating, As you know, anything that comes from a factory will have some sort of preservative in but in general its just good practice to keep them to a minimum.
Looks delicious!.....I'm cooking your version now😋👌👌❤❤
Hope you enjoy
@@butlersempire Was delicious Martin & Sharon thanks again for your fabulous recipe❤
If you ever do another shepherds pie mix a bit of Philadelphia cheese in with the potato I’m telling you now it’s absolutely gorgeous mixed in with potato and then on top of the mince meat and then cooked shepherds pie it’s really nice try that next time
Thanks for the tip!
Sharon it's a no brainer home made is the best .
Same mixture as the pasties really....you too cook like my mum used to old school, she was a chef I learned so must from just watching her cooking bless her .
Thank you so much
Yeah you can use them or you can use beef still shepherds pie
I put marmite in mine , that works really well
Always best to put some seasoning give it a little good taste all the other little ingredients to give it that cookie taste like I said home-made shepherds pie is the best. Another one do home-made macaroni cheese and then buy one from the shop and you’ll see the difference and the taste is completely different homemade macaroni cheese is better than the one in the shop try that
Very true!
Tesco needs a Sharon, and the world would be a better place
Homemade is best
12% meat in the 400 grams Tesco meal. So, 48 grams of meat. That's poor.
Add a little ketchup or tomato puree
We like cauliflower cheese with ours
FABULOUS ..
Keith richards eats a cottage pie before he goe's on stage
And he breaks the crust/potato on top
Nobody else is allowed😀
He's 80 .get them into you martin🥘🥘🥘
Why did you not use your air fryer in this one?
Ps. Where do u get your Maggi sauce.
PS. Don’t forget the worchestershire sauce next time. Pps. Loved your video on where you grew up. Will have to get Sharon to do one. 🙏
the Maggi is on Amazon at the moment. They are doing a deal, 12 bottles for £11.00
@@butlersempire great. Thanks 😊
mmmmm baked beans n cottage pie
A few quid to help you get another Cottage pie 👍
Haha thanks Ali, every little helps, wasn't that Asdas slogan lol
@@butlersempire Think so lol.😂👍
Oooo yummy 😋
😋
Himalayan sea salt?
Yes, correct
Add baked beans and you'll increase your own music.
Sush a lovely couple 💑 and dune well with the lovely food 😋
Always make our own, so much better, get some Henderson's Relish on it, yum. I'm hungry now 😁 Not really been on YT much for ages, your channel is the 1st one I visited and I'm now going through all the vids I've missed and glad to see you guys are still on top of your game.
Cheers Terry, there's plenty to look at lol
What's Henderson relish
No Maggi it contains msg not good...great videos guys
Its a very small amount and you only splash a little on.
Your food looks soooo yummy
Thank you 😋
£2.07 Shall....NOT £2.70
Home made is best I agree I'd rather eat real food than a load of chemicals cottage pie is one of my favorite meals I love winter for the stews casserolescottage pies I was brought up on good home cooked meals mum dad had 6 of us and mum could make a meal out of anything we wasn't a wealthy family mum dad went to work and my dissertation used to do finner Saturday and Sunday for mum coming in from work at half 12 mum worked part time cleaning at the hospital and dad wax a male nurse so money was pretty tight but we never went hungry or cold we were all loved .we had dinner at school and another cooked dinner at tea time mu even called ladies who went the chippy for dinner or tea lazy she thought they should of cooked for the family it's too dear now to go the chippy but Sharon snd Martin I agree nothing is better than home made food love fran xxxx
Yes Fran, Old values were to cook at home. Everyone has takeaways now but we hope to bring back home cooking.
@@butlersempire think it will turn tables and everyone will home cook again as take a ways are getting expensive x you can't go wrong with beans on toast and a fried egg on top of beans for dinner at 12or tea time xxx
it will take me about 4hrs to get to you so dont let Martin eat it all Sharon🤤🤤👍
Only home cooked is best
The bought one you cooked it wrong, suppose to put pie and box in oven for 40 min then remove pie from box and throw away the pie eat the box as it has a lot more taste than the pie 🤣, Sharon yours wins by a long way 👏🏻
Lol Nev
Great channel, btw your mrs sounds like Olive from on the buses :)
Steady on old chap
@@butlersempire thas a compliment :)
I am still wondering why you are doing this video. As we all know that home made by a good cook, is always the best. So I get that your sharing the recipe and cooking method to help people, nice one.
Hi, The contents of an Oxo, Wheat Flour (with added Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Salt, Maize Starch, Yeast Extract, Flavour Enhancers (Monosodium Glutamate, Disodium Guanylate), Colour (Ammonia Caramel), Beef Fat (4.5%), Autolysed Yeast Extract, Dried Beef Bonestock, Flavourings, Sugar, Acidity Regulator (Lactic Acid), Onion Powder, doesn't look that good either
Marcus, you'd be pretty hard pushed to remove all of those things in modern food bud. Its an oxo cube for beef flavouring. Anything that comes Packaged from a food supplier will have these sort of things in. The idea is to limit the exposure to the quantities and don't rely on packaged foods. Cook your own. that's the message.
I do not like the shops shepherds pies or cottage pies can’t stand them they don’t taste nice but as we all say as mum says best home-made is the best ✌️✌️
