Thanks Tim, this vid was a great help. My Topaz master section right hand channel was cutting out. Determined it wasn't an insert issue, opened her up and checked all the ribbon connectors, no go - so removed the entire master board and re soldered all the through points on that section of the board , fixed it. The boards are a bugger to remove!
by through points youre saying you reflowed every throughhole component on the master board? yikes.. i wrote my symptoms a few messages up ^^. i guess this is me then. lol yikes
as a follow up, reflowing the whole master board fixed almost all of my problems. last problem is noisy/intermittent master output insert jack sockets...now to find the correct part...
Tim. My topaz 8 has the left 2mix signal disappear often. Not always though and sometimes just drops in level. Can you tell what board is responsible for the main 2 mix out. . I’ve tried most things like swapping cables checking the inserts sockets are not playing up.
i have the exact same problem but its mainly just the metering that is intermittent.. spent half a day tracing and im so far inconclusive. Sometimes i lose master right, sometimes I lose left, sometimes i lose metering on the group buses too, and meterbridge VU's. there doesnt seem to be any predictable pattern.. my gut is telling me whatever is powering output and bus metering is loose/bad connection. and i think its the rainbow coloured ribbon cable. ive got spare IDC connectors for the topaz, so im thinking about crimping a new connector on the end. ill post any more results or findings mate.
@blanca_music Hi I have a similar problem where the rh chanel on the main output is 20db lower in volume than the left. Just wondering did you find a solution to your problem?
Hello, greate video. I have a 24ch topaz but i dont get +17v and -17v from the psu. I have change all components now (exept the resistors) but still no power... Do you have any ideas?
Thanks, Tim - this vid is a huge help! My channel 1 Mic is getting a little buggy and I'm sure you'll tell me to follow the same procedure. So far, the only issue I've had with mine (24 ch) is the ground fault wire. I installed a lock washer between the screw/nut which solved the issue. And you are correct - they are lovely sounding desks (but a bugger to take apart to work on).
Happy New Year to all of you guys... Thanks so much for this video... Helps a lot even though the mixer is not here for me to try fixing it with this video... but OMG you all a life saver... God bless for helping people who needs help with these Mixers out there.... I have a question.. can i connect this power one with my topaz project 8 32x8 power supply, i was told i could do that when the guy sold me the mixer? . Thanks so much, and God Bless you all
the 48 volt you are talking about, is that phantom power related. I have the 32 channel Topaz , Mixer works fine, but phantom supply comes and goes, but with mixer works as normal. . .
PLEASE NOTE : one of the MOST common faults on the TOPAZ (and many other consoles ) is a bad contact on the INSERT SOCKET = no signal on channel /mix or group ) so always check for this FIRST before you start opening up the desk !! , If you wire a STEREO JACK : TIP to RING you can plug this into an INSERT socket to prove this out .
Hi Tim. first off thanks for this video. very helpful! Is it possible to upgrade the Opamps in the gain stage in the topaz for a more somewhat warm sound? and if so, what would you recommend upgrading and changing out? Im also considering changing up the Hi and Low eq on some channels as i find those to be either very sizzeling or a little muddy. Do you have any recommendations regarding an upgrade with those? Thanks a bunch! peace
hello, the 1n1041 diode number u mentioned yields no results on web and the nte cross reference resembles a bolt.... also i can not make out the bridge rectifier part numbers for 17 volt plus and minus... please help, i need diodes for 6 channels and would like to stock rectifiers
I see this is an old Video, but it is very pertinent to me. I have a Topaz that the mains have ceased to work. I am thinking the power supply is the issue based on the power lights. Are you still in business?
Hi. I have question. Maybe you know what number is gain control parts? I mean I want to change some one but I don't want to open mixer yet. Maybe someone know?
Hi , well I have plenty of them and very cheap I you can have 8 for 20 GBP + post ( I can do you a MIX of POTS if you like ) , where are you ?? (for POST) cheers tim@studiosystems.co.uk
Does anyone have any tips on how to fix the common insert jack issue on boards like this? Is it possible to restore the jacks once they've begun to misbehave? I'm trying to avoid replacing them or having temporary shorted jacks on the inserts when not used. Thx
My gawwd! what a effort is needed to change one line input jack!!! Were they made in this bulk module style (I don't know!? whatever the exact opposite of modular single channel strips are called on most large consoles so the board could keep working and earning while maintainance was done on a channel with one small fault like this one;) Anyway, were they designed like this to get manufacture labour costs down? Cos you'd spend that and more with repair labour costs like Id charge if I was doing this particular job...
I would like to chime in here and say thanks. I got a Topaz from a friend and there was a rather pervasive 240Hz hum, and major popping when hitting the phase reverse switches. Channels 1-9 were the major culprits, and each had different types of sonic problems. I rebuilt the entire power supply including a new transformer which didn't help. Then in this video when you say the diodes can go bad, I was shown how to use my multimeter to test them and sure enough, just like you warned, they were the problem. I replaced all 4 diodes on all offending channels, as well as the two caps near the diodes and the one bigger cap down that the bottom of the board, and BOOM! the channels sound better for the recap, (cleaner low end) and the hum/noise problems are gone as well. So thanks for your tip on checking the diodes. I now have a beautiful sounding console. (Rebuilding the power supply will prove to be worthwhile anyway, I'm sure...eventhough that wasn't the offending problem.) Thanks again, Tim!
Thank you very much> Wish to see more video's about this board.

How can I identify the through points to solder (for someone with limited electrical knowledge!) I've cleaned all the boards but still have cutouts

this video helped me out so much today! i unplugged the AC & Dc connectors and forgot to label/take a photo. thanks!!!
No. Never fixed it. Sometimes it will reappear if I hit the 48v button seems to shock the desk into submission. Maybe its bad capacitors.

I'm not finding 1N1041 diodes online, is there an equivalent? also on the regulator board can u provide a part number for replacement, thank u

Well you need to measure the voltage at the power supply , to see WHERE it is failing,

great and helpful video.keep up the great work.and thanks for all you help.your amazing.pet the dog.anthony nyc
who would you recommend to repair the 48/17 volt power supply?
ive just repaired my own Topaz Maxi 8 power supply. My business is called Bristol Audio Repair if you still need help bud.

Thanks but right now I need to know only parametric numbers of that gain part? And I'm from Estonia!
