The easier way to keep the piece in place while sowing is to glue the edges with leather glue. Take a spreader and spread leather cement from just in front of the sowing hole to the edge on both the cover and the card/field notes holder and cement them together. This is optional of course but it makes for a stronger hold. You’ll want to ruff the leather up a bit with a scratch awl to make sure the glue contacts both pieces better, then sow away.
